- pimpbot1979, on 12/22/2007, -19/+235Breaking: Steve Jobs just died slipping and falling on an overpriced product.
- allaboutdatiki, on 12/22/2007, -1/+122RIP for all roofers that have died on the job.
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+117Really? I can't think of a shingle one.
- miketherazor, on 12/22/2007, -5/+118poor guy works his ass off to make something and has to die that way. Just goes to show you that you could go at any time and we ought to make the best of it while we are here.
- LordSkywalker, on 12/22/2007, -3/+87It's unfortunate. He sounds like he was a good guy. Didn't let the money go to his head.
- kipcrist, on 12/22/2007, -24/+95Irony!
- michaelje0, on 12/22/2007, -1/+65Live by the roof, Die by the roof.
- badwithcomputer, on 12/22/2007, -3/+49i'd just like to point out that in a digg world where irony is misused to describe situations in almost every article...this is an example of an outcome other than the one you'd expect and is most definitely ironic. rejoice that you can use the term freely and not sound like an idiot.
- virtualball, on 12/22/2007, -3/+47DAMN YOU ALANIS MORISSETTE!
- roguedragon, on 12/22/2007, -1/+44Oh, that's just messed up. I could think of a few roofing puns to use here, but I'll leave that lone.
- Baelorn, on 12/22/2007, -1/+39Actually he got entangled in a sweater and suffocated to death. In related news, Bill Gates fell through a window to his death.
/jokes
Poor guy, I find it admirable that he still fixed his own roof. - umber2007, on 12/22/2007, -7/+41I find nothing funny here. RIP Ken Hendricks.
- lordsteve, on 12/22/2007, -4/+36because as a seasoned professional he should know better?
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -1/+30What's the point of attacking someone who says something like "live your life to the fullest" exactly?
Are you that resentfull about your miserable life? He says something that's completely devoid of falsehood, just something nice and true and you feel compelled to attack him. Wtf is wrong with you? - BetterThanYou, on 12/22/2007, -1/+29Hendricks had a net worth of $3.5 billion, but he seemed unfazed by his wealth.
"It doesn't make any difference to me; I can't spend it," Hendricks said in an interview with Inc.com in September 2006. "I'd have to sell the company, and I'll sell the company over my dead body."
Well.... - nepawoods, on 12/22/2007, -8/+36"Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs"
It fits. - adoggz, on 12/22/2007, -7/+30I was completely off. I guessed that he died in some sort of horrible giant can-opener accident while singing folk tunes.
- dmiddle, on 12/22/2007, -6/+25shingles?
- adoggz, on 12/22/2007, -1/+18thanks, I always get robots and roofers confused.
- cawpin, on 12/22/2007, -3/+20Those don't work because they aren't under the person's own control. A roofer would know how to move on a roof without falling through. Hence, you would EXPECT him to not fall through.
- ordig, on 12/22/2007, -1/+17Roofing is a nasty business.
- acyork, on 12/22/2007, -3/+19actually...he died by the ground.
- wiirdo, on 12/22/2007, -1/+15You live by the sword, you die by the sword. Except his sword is the roof.
- MasterChi, on 12/22/2007, -1/+15Nope, that was bender.
- Iwantawii, on 12/22/2007, -2/+15"It doesn't make any difference to me; I can't spend it," Hendricks said in an interview with Inc.com in September 2006. "I'd have to sell the company, and I'll sell the company over my dead body."
LOL - ChapStik, on 12/22/2007, -1/+14I was kind of expecting:
"Roofing magnate dies in tasering incident" - inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+13Yes, this guy is a real ***** for starting a business that prevents ***** from flying from the sky into our homes. He deserves everything he got.
- evilfourzero, on 12/22/2007, -0/+13He was a good guy. Being a citizen of Beloit, Wisconsin I've seen the good this man has done. He even payed for the program that is giving me my pilots license free of charge. RIP Ken.
- Linzee82, on 12/22/2007, -4/+175. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
It still fits. He was the CEO of a roofing company. That's why it wasn't expected for him to fall through in his own house. If he was one of the workers, it wouldn't be ironic.
Why are we discussing this anyways? - alexforcefive, on 12/22/2007, -3/+16Uh, not unless your only reason for living is to laugh at death. Which would be kind of ***** up, when you think about it
- mal1964, on 12/22/2007, -0/+12Crashes through
- TalenKlaive, on 12/22/2007, -3/+15I'm sorry, but I don't think Hallmark sells a "I'm sorry your boss fell off of two-stories of irony" card. Thank you vince vaughn.
- Circuit, on 12/22/2007, -3/+15Not only does that not make sense, it's also the most ***** stupid comment I've read all day.
Congratulations! - cambob76, on 12/22/2007, -3/+15RIP to all the people crushed to death by falling roofers on the job.
- cawpin, on 12/22/2007, -1/+12It would still be irony if it was a worker. You would expect a roofer to know how to move across a roof without falling through.
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -6/+16nice try, cement head
- mohavlich, on 12/22/2007, -0/+10No one. Luckily the article says he's the 91st RICHEST MAN, and 66 years old.
- pintomp3, on 12/22/2007, -6/+15not really. it's about as ironic as an auto manufacturer dying in a car crash or the a gun manufacturer being shot.
- tribble222, on 12/22/2007, -3/+12It dosen't fit. It would be ironic if he was a "roof hermit" who never ever went on a roof but the one time he finally did he died by falling through.
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -2/+11Why not? What if that's what this person likes to do best? Should that person do things she doesn't like because others decided that this was how to live a life correctly?
"Human life is truly a short affair. It is better to live doing the things that you like. It is foolish to live within this dream of a world seeing unpleasantness and doing only things that you do not like. But it is important never to tell this to young people as it is something that would be harmful if incorrectly understood. Personally, I like to sleep. And I intend to appropriately confine myself more and more to my living quarters and pass my life away sleeping."
- Hagakure - nepawoods, on 12/22/2007, -2/+11Are you employing Socratic irony there? If so, I'll play along:
Main Entry: iro·ny Listen to the pronunciation of irony Listen to the pronunciation of irony
Pronunciation: ˈī-rə-nē also ˈī(-ə)r-nē
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural iro·nies
Etymology: Latin ironia, from Greek eirōnia, from eirōn dissembler
Date: 1502
1: a pretense of ignorance and of willingness to learn from another assumed in order to make the other's false conceptions conspicuous by adroit questioning —called also Socratic irony
2 a: the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning b: a usually humorous or sardonic literary style or form characterized by irony c: an ironic expression or utterance
3 a (1): incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result (2): an event or result marked by such incongruity b: incongruity between a situation developed in a drama and the accompanying words or actions that is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play —called also dramatic irony tragic irony - cawpin, on 12/22/2007, -2/+11It is coincidence but it's also still irony. They aren't mutually exclusive.
- chris9902, on 12/22/2007, -2/+11there's a difference between 'overpriced' and 'can't afford'.
- lordsteve, on 12/22/2007, -0/+8movie theater concessions?
- Instaa, on 12/22/2007, -2/+10Yes it is ironic. He made billions doing roofs for other people and then he dies falling through his own roof. About as ironic as it gets.
- cougar618, on 12/22/2007, -0/+8He's 66, the 91st richest man.
RTFA - LinusTheLim, on 12/22/2007, -3/+10It makes sense as irony to me: The man makes a living with roofs, which success allows him to live, and a good life. In the end it was one of the very things that made him a success that let him down -- literally!
- mal1964, on 12/22/2007, -1/+8Tarps are used all the time he knew there was no plywood there. he came from a bank party probably a holiday party. open bar banks have nice parties I say he had a few cocktails.
- Pake, on 12/22/2007, -0/+7But if people did that, we couldn't argue over the internet!
- vertinox, on 12/22/2007, -1/+8I don't think people understood what I was saying. Laughing is the human minds natural defense against death and despair. Its natural for humans to laugh at horrible things that happen to other people because otherwise they'd probaly become too depressed to go on with life because they know they'll be next.
People don't like to admit it but if you laugh then you aren't stressed as much as you would be.
By feeling bad for this person, you are only adding more stress to your own well being where otherwise there should be none. Does that make sense? -
