- DonnyDiamonds, on 11/11/2009, -2/+18This line from the blog says so much.
Now spare a thought for the senselessness of it all. Nobody had to die – on either side. - Darkstar370, on 11/11/2009, -0/+14"This is not a peace. It is an armistice for twenty years"
-Ferdinand Foch, 1919 - jeremymccurdy, on 11/11/2009, -0/+14I'd never heard the story of the Christmas truce and soccer game, it's both awesome and a pretty big statement on how politicians and generals are really the only ones with bloodlust.
- xXSheepyXx, on 11/11/2009, -0/+13 In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 - 1918) - kaisa226, on 11/11/2009, -3/+16Much respect to the men who sacrificed their lives defending our future.
- warbAU, on 11/11/2009, -1/+12LEST WE FORGET............
- rusty0101, on 11/11/2009, -1/+9For folks in the US, see Wikipedia. Veteran's day is the United States variant of Remembrance Day, but what the US declares as a holiday is only valid as a US holiday. The rest of the world, or at least parts of it, will remember it either as Armistice day (and I grew up with people who remember it that way) or Remembrance day.
- withoutamartyr, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7Eerily true.
- angryredplanet, on 11/11/2009, -1/+8Well done and thank you, FI5HERMAN.
Thank you to all those who gave their freedom defending ours. - whitedove66, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7So many people to thank and be grateful for. Thank you
- bated321, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6Patience
- thekronz, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5I find this to be one of the most important days of the year, but I fear that the meaning behind it goes forgotten. There is no need for fighting, no need for war. I humbly thank all of those with all of my heart who have fought/are fighting. I will never even begin to comprehend the courage it takes...
- frogmanki, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4I believe what Napoleon said about the greedy bankers without a conscience, has probably been closer to the real cause of war than just, who fired the first shot.
- inactive, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3 Lets all remember the fallen and the ones who went to war and returned
- Waiting2awake, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3"...big statement on how politicians and generals are really the only ones with bloodlust."
_ With all the respect int he world to those that have made the ultimate sacriface, the sooner we understand the above, the sooner we can understand that they are "fighting for our freedom" as is told to us all the time, but rather they are fighting for the politicians. - angryredplanet, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2And so I did read the article. Remembrance Day is about giving thanks. The diggers most certainly gave their freedom largely without consideration and without knowing what they had gotten into. They did it unquestioningly and in the hope that we wouldn't have to.
The blogger definitely has an anti-war and anti-establishment perspective and I agree with a lot of what he says. One would hope so after such a bloody battle, one that Australia had no place fighting in; one in which we fought as allies. But be careful not to belittle the fact that they still stood and fought bravely, for us no less. - mickstephenson, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Sorry those figures actually refer to 1914, I wrote the 2009 figures and then thought I might be able to find the 1914 figures so found them and changed the figures, but forgot to alter the text.
- Waiting2awake, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Looking around the world today, it appears that we have.
- BullHunter, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Well said. Thank you for explaining this to our American friends.
- rusty0101, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2There are people who will look at the title, and even ignore the summary and think that someone is trying to take the Veteran out of Veteran's Day. That's not the case here, and I just wanted to point that out. Circularity is lousy as a method of proof, but has it's uses in tying things together at times.
- nullcodes, on 11/11/2009, -6/+6Thanks.
I am reminded of the movie private ryan ...they were killed protecting us.. but then how can my life be worth more than theirs? - mickstephenson, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1angryredplanet: "one that Australia had no place fighting in"
Japanese population 2009: 52,752,000
Australian population 2009: 4,948,990
Now scale that back to 1914, and now imagine why Australia went to war for European powers. Perhaps because Australia had no means to defend itself without it's British Allies?
If you follow your standpoint to it's logical conclusion not only did Australians have "no business" fighting a European war, but Britain had "no business" defending a British Colony in South East Asia, ergo Australia had "no business" existing at all.
Which is a rational viewpoint if that's the one you hold, but I doubt you see it that way, you know using realism. Much more likely you think that come 1901 Australia should be an entirely sovereign power except it relies on a benevolent benefactor to take care of it's defense and should give nothing in return. - Phosphan, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1Perhaps you should read the article before talking about "defending freedom".
- Phosphan, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1My point is that AFAIK for most people involved in this mess, this war was about power, not about freedom. For most who fought for freedom you can't say they defended it but they struggled for it. I have no idea where your grandfathers lived and I am not completely firm in WW1 history - please help me remember and tell me who's freedom was endangered by this war.
- monodelasno, on 11/11/2009, -4/+0That was rather circular.
- ChileanGoD, on 11/11/2009, -9/+2So many 11's
