- wedoDigg, on 01/05/2009, -12/+86He said people who get stomach surgery to lose weight "lazy ***** fat pigs"
Good for Ricky, anyone notice he is a (fat) Comedian? He is not a politician. Damn winging over eaters!
I will leave you with my favorite fat joke:
Your mums so fat she plays hopscotch like, "Texas...Alabama...North Carolina...Pennsylvania..." - vwerf, on 01/05/2009, -5/+46I don't see those poeple bitching about Wal-E
The world is full of pussies who bitch @ everything just because they are so insecure in their own skin that they want to make everyone else miserable as well - BullHunter, on 01/05/2009, -4/+43Ricky Gervais is a comedian and we should keep in mind that his words need to be heard 'visually' i.e. there is a hidden pun in everything he says. The fact is that he is slightly overweight himself and probably comfortable with that fact. Making fun of fat people is within his realm. You should hear his racial, gay, sexual, gender....etc.... jokes!
- fr0mundacheese, on 01/06/2009, -1/+36Comedy shouldn't have to be defended or apologized for. This world is nothing but a bunch of hypersensitive pussies.
- RevChris2, on 01/05/2009, -1/+33My nature vs nurture class debate would have been so much better with Ricky's explanation of how you become gay
- TEEMANOID, on 01/05/2009, -1/+31Gervais was meaning people who just go and get the fat sucked out of their bodies are the lazy ones, which I agree with frankly. Gervais exercises himself in order to stay alive longer 'to eat more cheese and beer' and compared to some fat people he is very slight, yet he still does more exercise than those who truely need to.
I think his comment was fair. - SantaPlausible, on 01/05/2009, -0/+28" ... head like a ***** orange."
- TotalHalibut, on 01/06/2009, -4/+26Being fat is the result of bad lifestyle choices, note the word 'choices'. You choose to be fat, just as you can choose to slim. Deal with it, and expect mockery until you do.
- honeymustardn, on 01/06/2009, -2/+23Digg is where the fatties go now apparently.
- Hetman, on 01/05/2009, -2/+15I am sick of hearing that no one makes fun of gay people and muslims. Their are plenty of people that make fun of gay and muslims. Just watch comedy central for a few minutes. Everyone gets made fun of, that is just the way it is.
- Bowd99, on 01/06/2009, -0/+13You're entitled to your own opinion of course, but in all fairness I think you are talking out of your arse. Towards the end of the final series of the UK Office, despite anything that had come before, it's impossible not to empathise with David Brent (Ricky's character). The characters's heart is always in the right place, it's just that he tries far too hard to get people to like him and see him as the great comedian and entertainer he envisions himself as, and this leads to the awkward scenarios that makes the show what it is.
As for Ricky himself being a desperate fame-seeker I would argue the complete opposite. He may come across as arrogant and desperate for attention in his stand-up and TV work, but this stage persona is just a slightly more politically incorrect version of the Office character in the first place and is there purely to entertain. It just seems to me that you have managed to blur the line between the characters and the man himself, which I think enforces how good a comedian he is (i.e. you're never sure if he's joking or not).
In any interviews with colleagues and co-workers of his, they always comment on how incredibly humble the guy is, which is also reflected in the fact that The Office and Extra's (if you haven't seen it, look it up) only ran for two seasons despite enormous pressure from the public and broadcasters for more.
And for the record, he's completely right about fat people. If you get a chance to see "Fame" which is his third stand-up DVD, he even has a skit in which he tells of how he was asked to perform a charity gig for obese people, in which I think the point of the joke comes over a lot clearer than it did in the transcript included in this submission.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_6MKwoFxNfs - tribetime, on 01/06/2009, -0/+13Spoken like a true fatty
- BrandonJM, on 01/05/2009, -7/+18Just pointing out here: The Huffington Post has to now create stories out of nothing since they were caught swiping other people's stuff. If this item didn't run on Huff, I doubt any of us would really care. He's a comedian. He says funny things. Don't like it? There are only a million other comedians out there ready to entertain you.
- Slique22, on 01/06/2009, -2/+13And yet that 'untalented' and 'unfunny' guy has won seven BAFTA awards, four British Comedy Awards, three Golden Globes and two Emmy's. Funny that.
Also, David Brent had a goatee. Andy Millman did not. - flangepiece, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7Heh heh heh. Analogy.
- Filter, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7I'm fat and I like fat jokes. Please don't take them away.
- pseudologue, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6I haven't RTFA yet but as I was reading this I can actually hear him saying this in my head. And it's hilarious.
- immatellyouwhat, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6he mlght have poor vlslon ieave hlm aione
- shwaa, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Wall-E was much needed social commentary.
Unfortunately I'm afraid that most people missed the point, which is why they didn't bitch about Wall-E.
The degree to which it made fun of what has become the norm in America was even greater than Ricky Gervais' fat jokes. - bluemonnggee, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6the fat jokes werent really very funny, but the comparison of getting fat to getting gay was hilarious
- redriot, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6He seems to take issue not with fat people, but more specifically shallow ***** that hack their bodies up in an attempt to undo the damage they have done to themselves. I can agree with that. I know 3 people that had that Gastro-Bypass whatever the ***** surgery and all 3 of them have gained all of their weight back. One is fatter than she was before. So, he's right. It's ***** stupid to go hacking off parts of your body if your not going to change your lifestyle.
- jabbajabba, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Eloquently stated comment - but i am still trying work out wtf your trying to say?
I am currently over weight and need to lose weight as I am worried about my health. So I have a choice to make when tempted by cookies, cakes, pizzas etc. I try to take the right choice and eat healthy...no one else is responsible for that choice apart from me, as it's me who gets fat at the end of the day. - Boshow, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6His radio show he did with stephan merchant was very funny.
- VoodooPunk, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6In my experience only morons seem to thing he isn't funny. So I guess we cancel each other out.
- immatellyouwhat, on 01/06/2009, -2/+7He makes me want to go for a ***** run! : D
- WraTH017, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5I would think fat people would have thicker skin than this.
Are they off limits now? ***** em. Stop eating and taking up too much space, and maybe we'll respect you. Anybody who has taken public transportation on a daily basis for a long period of time should understand my hatred of fat (obese, really) people.... having to stand one hour surrounded and crammed in between obese people in the train, and unable to sit because most seats are occupied by one half of a person. Sorry, my sympathy has been overcome by my own daily discomfort. - Jeffler, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5Let him joke. Fat jokes are awesome, and I say this as a fat guy.
- phogasmic, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5Man, Ricky Gervais is sooooo funnny! He is absolutely right, in 99% of the cases of people being overweight it is of their own doing. It is from eating too much and not exercising. They deserve about as much sympathy as smokers and alcoholics I think. We should help them get better, but we should not treat obesity like race or sexual orientation. I've seen too many people lose amazing weight in a healthy way. Plus, we are one of the few countries with a obesity problem, there aren't as many obese people in Japan, because they eat smaller portions, take more mass transit, and eat healthier foods.
- Testiculese, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6You don't need to be an expert to know that you can't gain weight if you don't eat.
Nobody gets fat off a salad, unless that salad is the lettuce on this:
http://tarapfeifer.com/albums/stuff/burger_copy.jp ... - drunkenoaf, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4While some argue that ironic jokes aren't ironic, and betray an innate prejudice (viz the whole Sarah Silverman debate), I was blessed with the ability to detect irony, and do get the humour, and enjoy both these comedians.
You can't blame the artist for people misinterpreting the message-- those that don't get the irony, for example, and who laugh for the wrong reasons.
To view an artistic creation, and the the creator's explanation of that character as being "pretty clear" that he's the same as his character is bogus. You should look for clips of Gervais on the 11 O'Clock show if you really want to outrage yourself.
If you don't find him funny, click the button on your TV remote, or the pause button on your media player, and choose something else.
In any event, much like capitalism, most humour is at the expense of someone (read Jimmy Carr's The Naked Jape). The world would be more boring without both. - TheCasablancan, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4I used to be fat. The whole thing about being remaining fat is that you like themself too much, or rather, you don't dislike your body enough to change it.
My mom is fat currently. She is 5'4 and weighs around 200 lbs, and she has a lot of difficulty losing weight because she generally likes the way she looks. She dresses well, and has a very pretty face. She's just recently decided to go see a personal trainer after myself and my little sister lost weight and became lean.
For me the key to losing my fat was to look in the mirror and deciding that I was ugly. I know it's not PC, because we're all "beautiful on the inside", but no one sees your insides when you're walking on the street. When I see a fat person anymore, I think they're lazy. If I could do it, why can't they?
If you genuinely ARE happy being who you are, then cool, I'm glad for you. But the people who bitch about their weight but do nothing, ya'll are ***** pointless. Either learn to accept yourself for who you are, or change yourself into something that you CAN accept. - Shazbuckle, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4NINE pie and chips a day?
- richehh, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5It was in several British Newspapers too.
- zeitfox, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4no fat chicks
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -3/+7Im sorry but fat people need to be made fun of, this way they'll either lose weight, or off themselves. I mean, come on. Who likes fat people? This way girl cliques wont have "the fat one" which means playing wingman wont be quite as big of a crapshoot.
I dont care if they have some sort of disease, they can still control their intake, thus giving them complete control over their weight.
do some sit-ups, fattys. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4so i can do whatever i want and then blame it on the Big Bang?
- plixer, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Ah, give me a ***** break. The vast amount of people that are overweight and obese are fat because they're not active and they cant put down the fork.
It's true, there are always special cases, such as genetic conditions, but those are called "special cases" for a reason. It's not the norm. Almost 70% of the population of Mississippi is overweight or obese; think about that. - GalacticRerun, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3There's nothing more I love than a good analogy. His gay/fat analogy is up there.
- phogasmic, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3I think you are an exception, in most cases I think it is as simple as committing to getting thin, and taking the necessary steps to get that way.
- enotswhat, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o233/papercrack ...
- Testiculese, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3It hasn't been 100 years, it's been 20.
If you *choose* to eat over-processed ***** food, you will get fat. If you *choose* to eat 5lbs of it each sitting, you will get fat. If you *choose* to eat at KFC every day, you will get fat. If you *choose* to eat 5lbs of it each sitting, you will get very fat.
It's all in the choices you make. - jordanlgta, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Why is it that we can't tell fat people to eat better so they can live longer? What kind of a world do we live in where we favor not saying anything over helping?
- tribetime, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Dugg for truthiness
- howcansheslap, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4Yes you can "choose" to be either fat or thin.. I've been both and it has been totally based on my choices.
- Bowd99, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3I don't know if this is common knowledge in the States, but Ricky Gervais had a taste of fame in the 80s in a new wave group called Seona Dancing. Just had to share it while we're on the subject.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6G9uGPQsVNk - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Mmmmmmm......wings......
- VoodooPunk, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3I love Gervais. The Office and Extras were hilarious.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Bottom line: it's comedy there's ***** anybody can do about it whether his jokes are insensitive or not.
