- eighties, on 05/02/2008, -2/+46Roll up your sleeves, fellow diggers. Here's what we're looking for:
- A World War I Fleet Finch Biplane with a wingspan of 120 inches
- A Focke-Wulf Fw 190 with an 86 inch wingspan
- The 102 inch wing to a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.
- The 98 inch wing to a Grumman F6F Hellcat
- The 108 inch wing to a Chance Vought F4U Corsair - duggtodeath, on 05/02/2008, -14/+51Why doesn't he just pick up one of his remotes and fly the plane back in?
- peppino, on 06/03/2008, -0/+20Note to self... "Do not keep most prized possessions in a trailer."
- GemStar38, on 05/02/2008, -3/+23I hope he gets them back
- dafragsta, on 05/02/2008, -1/+17Get a hobby and stop redefining life for other people. Life is the meta word wielded by dumbasses who think they have one, but don't care enough about anything to know what that is about. If someone stole my guitars and other musical gear, I'd probably be equally distraught.
- foofightrs777, on 05/02/2008, -0/+14Poor guy. I can't even imagine losing something that I dedicated my life to. Here's to hoping that he has the planes returned.
- BadseedJR, on 05/02/2008, -2/+14Wow, apparently plane enthusiasts don't get jokes.
- TonyLocNE, on 05/02/2008, -1/+12I'm not going to lie, its going to be mighty tuff for diggers to find these airplanes flying around from inside their moms' basements..
- algorhythmix, on 05/02/2008, -0/+10I am looking in Google streets, you cover Google maps and lets reconvene at 1500 hrs
- nirav72, on 05/02/2008, -0/+10Maybe to help a fellow geek out to get his property back?
- kidcodea, on 05/02/2008, -0/+9RC buildings!
- Solstice, on 05/02/2008, -1/+9Except that they were likely only looking to steal the trailer and could care less about the planes. Besides the trailer itself, the thieves were probably looking for tools, lawn mowers, and/or construction equipment. If they're not trashed, the planes will likely show up in a "used tools" booth at the San Jose or Oakland flea market.
- rrouse, on 05/02/2008, -3/+10There are limited number of places where these planes can be flown. If he puts the word out all around the country to these places it shouldn't take long before somebody sees one of them.
- bbqsalad, on 05/02/2008, -1/+8You must have such a busy life to be arguing on the internet.. Shouldn't you be in school kiddo?
- TonyLocNE, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6Excellent, I have a buddy inside the CIA going through all recent ESCHELON files as we speak... Chloe, I need that god-damned uplink to NORAD radar systems NOW! We're going to find these terrorist bastards...
- dafragsta, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6 If you automatically think you do something better than someone else you don't even know about, then you should go drink bleach to prevent the chance of that brand of ignorance from spreading and share with us some samples of your virtuoso stylings. BTW, I've been playing for 20 years sparky and I'd never automatically assume that someone that played for ten was better or worse than I am, but you wear your ignorance like a badge of honor and that only makes my point for me.
- directive0, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6A tragedy for the corsair alone.
- chanop, on 05/02/2008, -1/+7Did your observation include the other 20 comments that said the same thing?
- toonworld, on 05/02/2008, -1/+6for some reason, I get the feeling that flying an RC plane into a building won't have the same impact as a full-sized 747.
- 4rch, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5Whoa Whoa Whoa, you're telling him to get a life? Dude, you're trolling digg comments. What does that say about you?
- gbarger, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5No kidding, don't be a jerk. My hobby is photography. I've got a few thousand dollars in equipment and I'd be upset if it were stolen, but devastated if I somehow lost my pictures. That would be a nightmare, and this is no different. This is what this man put his time and energy and love into.
- vorbalhorde, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4There's an RC airstrip a few minutes north of Morgan Hill that I bike past every weekend. The same guys are there every time and they are absolutely in love with their aircraft. It's sad when anything is stolen from you, but something so precious as this? The whole community must be devastated.
- oldhick, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4The thieves probably wanted the trailer, not the planes.
- SteelTallon, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3I would venture to say that they were after the trailer too. But don't put it past the person(s) either that they may have known what was inside too. I go to the RC shows and everyone seems to have a little white trailer for their helicopters and planes. Especially the Giant scale planes that are to big to fit in a vehicle such as these were. If the thief(s) know anything about RC, they will have an idea that what was inside that trailer is worth more than the trailer itself.. As far as selling them..I don't know it could be as easy as craigslist. If I had not read this story, I probably wouldn't think anything about the planes or wings being stolen. Hope he gets them back..
- troycott, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3The suspect has been described as a 0' 4" tall male, wearing a tiny scarf.
- CivilBeeker, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2I hope he gets them back and the scumbag should have the sh*t beat out of him for it, but its likely the trailer itself was the target and the planes will most likely end up in the trash, but im hoping for a dumb criminal to try and sell them. keep and ey on ebay
- TonyLocNE, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I was kind of a dick.. Well let me apologize.. I was in a bad mood earlier, I was ***** around and missed two of my classes today which probably wasn't a good idea because finals are next week... At any rate, I was out of line, but I really do not like redundancy. I'll work on it.
- oldhick, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2As i look above me in the comment history I don't see these comments you mention... But I didn't dive down into everyone's replies beneath the comments above me. I apologize for restating then...
- oldhick, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2I didn't think I needed to mention it, i thought it was implicit in my comment. You have a trailer, you have RC plains. Both get stolen. I say the thieves were probably after the trailer. That would imply the were NOT after the planes.
I apologize for the miscommunication and I certainly didn't mean to bore you with repetitive and pointless comments. You have correctly pointed out my mistake and I thank you for it sir. I will try to refrain from such behavior in the future! Enjoy your weekend. - kidcodea, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2RC*anything* is a different species.
- IllBeBack, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2@TonyLocNE - There is really no need for you to be such a douche about a single comment made without any malice toward you. Take a deep breath and then make the correct decision to NOT click the "Submit Comment" button next time. Keep your negativity to yourself and seek some therapy or anger management remediation.
- xerodustrial, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2While the hobby seems silly to me, it's apparently crucial to this dude's happiness. He should be left alone to be happy with his toys if that's he wants to do with his life. I hope he eventually gets them back, otherwise replaces them, and gets a smile back on his face!
And what's the point in stealing that stuff? Yeah, it might be worth some money, but how easy can it be to offload those kinds of stolen goods for their market value? - robthom, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2"It's my life. It has been since I was 8 years old."
I feel bad for him that his crutch from this miserable existence has been snatched by no-goodniks. But on the otherhand, get a life bro. - ngmcs8203, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Especially in Morgan Hill, Salinas and Gilroy... where most of the South Bay's inexpensive gardeners live. Being from Morgan Hill and always enthralled by seeing these little planes fly off of 101, I feel bad for this guy. With the flea market at DeAnza taking place tomorrow, I'll keep my eye out for these planes.
- drgreenberg, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1I think he'll be fine in the end when he realizes that building the planes is a large part of the fun in this hobby and that he'll be able to keep just as busy in the hobby going forward.
- ngmcs8203, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Don't start me on the mushroom farm in Morgan Hill. Mmmm cow ***** smells great first thing on a cool summer morning.
- norcalscan, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1I found two of them!
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.852453,-121. ... - inactive, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Damn I used to live in Gilroy, like 10 minutes away..
- rrouse, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1He should offer a reward, no questions asked and post it around the flying fields. I would guess that the thieves would try to sell them for a few bucks and eventually they will find there way into the hands of someone that understands their value.
- digitalbuzz, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1I'd check ebay. Thieves needed the money for gas.
- deskattire, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Well said.
- Szandor, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1It says he's bored between popping pimples and masturbating to anime.
- TonyLocNE, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Alright, I got a great idea for an afternoon of RC fun.... First we construct two tall, identical RC buildings and rig them to blow with the help of an RC demolition and then we fly two of the RC planes into the buildings and simultaneously demo the buildings as the planes fly into them... It'll be a BLAST.
/ I carry things way too far sometimes... - Szandor, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Jesus H. Chirist, I'm sick of "why is this on the front page?" comments.
It's simple: bury it or STFU. - foofightrs777, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1I drove through there once. I've never smelt so much garlic in my life ; and I'm Italian!
- rodrigo74, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1http://digg.com/how
- TonyLocNE, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1being smart has nothing to do with it, that's not why I dugg you down. The reason I buried you was because I had read that exact same comment 15 times by the time I got to yours. Anyone who had read the article would have had the same information.. Why ***** bother?
And for a response that was about where they would sell the planes................ You didn't even mention once anything about selling the planes. - roflsd, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Any true RC enthusiast replaces the receivers to run off of the cellular network. Simply replace the normal RF receiver with the guts of a camera cell phone and you are never out of range, and you can fly from the cockpit.
Amateurs. - chanop, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1You are very much forgiven
- dougmc, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1The article is right on about the difficulty of selling the planes. They would be noticed by somebody, even if they were sold on the other side of the country, perhaps when being sold or when the new owner flies them.
Unfortunately, the best the thief is likely to do with them is rip out all the components (radio gear, engines, etc.) and sell them. The planes are too obvious. Which is sad, because for planes like this, $1000 worth of components (and that's on the high end) is far less important than the 2000 hours of work that went into the body of the plane. But the thief would probably smash them up and throw them away, or burn them ...
If he's lucky, the planes or trailer will be found abandoned somewhere. Hopefully if the planes aren't in the trailer, they won't have been sitting in the elements for very long. Or the thief will try to sell them, and will learn that the R/C community is rather close knit and will spend some time in jail. -
