Davidmesaaz is clearly trying to equate "gay marriage" to "pedophiles having sex with kids" by saying that they are both civil rights struggles and that both parties "love each other". The only problem with that analogy is an 8 year old child is not mature enough mentally, emotionally or physically to enter into a sexual relationship. Just like an 8 year old is not allowed to vote, or drive a car, or buy alcohol and cigarettes, or serve in the military, etc.
This falls under the "slippery slope" argument. Allowing gay marriage will lead to pedophiles marrying kids, men having multiple wives, people marrying their dogs. The polygamy straw man is a poor argument against gay marriage - both legally and socially. Legally, the marriage contract imparts a number of important benefits and responsibilities upon each party. There is the ability to make decisions on behalf of your spouse should they become incapacitated - signing off on necessary medical procedures for example. It also grants the spouse status in the event that the disbursal of an estate is required (without a will).
If polygamy is allowed, than how would you deal with the a situation such as differing opinions of each spouse? What if a spouse is incapacitated, a decision must be made about a medical procedure, and the remaining spouses disagree? Who gets to decide what's right? Are you going to have to go through a prolonged legal battle to figure out which spouse gets to make the call? What if it's an emergency?
Socially, the idea of polygamy presupposes a non-equal relationship between the spouses. In a two-party marriage contract, the potential for equality - legal and social, is there. In a multiple-party marriage contract, however, there can be no such thing as true equality. There will always be favored spouses. Additionally, most polygamous marriages are not true multiple-partner marriages. They're generally one, dominant, male figure and multiple wives (or vice versa). The subordinate spouses are inherently unequal, either relative to each other or the dominant spouse.
Either way, polygamy should not be considered in the same manner as gay marriage, as the dynamic between the parties is unique. - TempusEdax, on 12/28/2008, -11/+58I can.
