Unfortunately people in the middle east have been living days like this for the past few decades at the hands of this country.- RevJonathan, on 03/21/2008, -20/+46This country being the US?
Well, you can certainly disagree with US policy in the Middle East, but the real killers are the terrorists and tyrants of the region. You can blame the US for meddling, but the Middle East has managed to collapse of its own accord.- purpmint008, on 03/21/2008, -13/+22Yes, the US government not the ignorant people, but the government.
In case you don't know, we prop up the terrorists and the tyrants and our corporations make money while doing that.
Examples: the CIA helped create Al-Quaeda and the Taliban, we put Saddam in power (JFK) and supported him and gave him weapons and allowed him to oppress his own people, we supported the dictator of Iran, we support the dictator of Saudi Arabia, and the list goes on and on and on.
American government (again, not the ignorant people) terrorism has killed FAR MORE INNOCENT PEOPLE than killed on 9/11.
Get your facts straight.
We ignore these facts at our own expense.
Why? Because the military-industrial complex and the oil companies are walking away with OUR tax money! - makkaveli19, on 03/21/2008, -4/+5while i agree it's not directly caused by the us. it's ridiculous to think about how all these "tyrants" that you speak of were best friends with the us not so long ago and were helped.
- dylio, on 03/21/2008, -6/+8We're responsible for the tyrants and terrorists. The Shaw in Iran is an example, Musharraf another. OH! Let's not forget we gave Saddam the weapons he used to kill our troops (and his own people) with. As Purpmint said, we trained the Taliban to guard our pipelines in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. So in essence, we are responsible for the conflict, among other reasons.

Psychologically it's called Flash-bulb memory, and because your body, at the time, produced a physical reaction, and since then you have repeated the story, you remember everything about the moment clearly, if maybe, no matter how accurate you think your account is, inaccurately.- Terr01, on 03/21/2008, -1/+18AFAIK psych tests indicate people aren't any more accurate than remembering any other special days (e.g. weddings, births), people just *feel* like they're recalling things perfectly.

- burstaneurysm, on 03/21/2008, -5/+7I was a Freshman at DePaul University. I was in a math class in the middle of downtown Chicago.
I was in the back of the room and heard an announcement in the hall that the building was to be evacuated. The teacher didn't hear it, so I stood up and said "Uh, they're saying we need to leave the building."
I had assumed that it was nothing more than a fire drill or something, but when I walked outside and saw that every building in the Loop was clearing out, I knew something was wrong. I went up to a woman and asked if she knew what was going on. All she said was "A plane just crashed into the Twin Towers." I walked to the subway to go home. The train was packed, like the it was worst rush hour in history. The entire way home, nobody said anything. It was eerily quiet; the only noise was the sound of the train.
I got home and turned on the TV... I sat there in shock for the next few hours.

Next period, gym, and the gym teacher is listening to the radio, which was saying the Pentagon had just been hit. The first time I saw a television, it was all over and the buildings had already collapsed.

- Wargalas, on 03/21/2008, -15/+5Then never forget who the real threat is: Al-Qaeda. We can have disagreements with the Middle East, but the minute civilians are murdered in cold blood, the gloves come off. What do you suppose the reaction would be if one of our religious nutjobs slammed a hijacked plane into the Grand Mosque in Mecca during Hajj?
There would be rioting in the streets everywhere and you can bet your ass that Arabs wouldn't be talking about how they somehow "deserved it" or how it was a "government conspiracy" or any other such nonsense. They'd want revenge, and rightfully so. So we're the "bad guys" for wanting to bring the murderers of 3,000 innocent people to justice, whether it be in the courts or on the receiving end of a sniper rifle? ***** that.

I'm the guy you want on your side when ***** goes down. :) - makkaveli19, on 03/22/2008, -1/+2warg i hope you read this, why do the life of americans matter more than someone living in london, iran, china, austrailia. a civilian is a civilian.
- Wargalas, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1I'll be happy to answer that. I don't think the lives of civilians are worth more then others, however, when you have an entire or a vast majority of the population that supported the Taliban and they perpetrated a crime of this magnitude, they have two choices: Surrender Bin Laden or face a scorched earth policy.
Why does the lives of Americans matter less to you? Everyone seems to have forgotten that the 9/11 victims were only going to work, getting on an airplane, and going about their daily lives. Now, you see people coming out of the woodwork to say we deserved 9/11, including Barack Obama's pastor.
When threatened, I want people to fear our retribution more then anything in the world. I'm more then happy to open my arms and my home country to immigrants who come here legally to build a life for themselves. That's what America was founded on. However, when you wage war, you fight it with the goal of winning it and getting it over quickly. You don't ***** around losing men and materials trying to fight the politically correct fight. You kill everyone that's a threat to you.

When I got home, I turned on the news (one of the few times I did before the sixth grade) and saw the smoldering remains of the tower, the people screaming, the towers falling. - bbardlbradd, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3Yes, I too remember the day very well. My sopho year's 1st period class had a TV and we watched it live. I remember no one did anything all day but watch TV and wait for class to let us go. I remember looking up and seeing no sign of planes... it was a chillingly quiet time if you didn't have a TV or radio.
- bliz, on 03/21/2008, -1/+4I can't remember every detail except that it was the day before my english prelims and the news showed people jumping off the building in a bid to escape from the fire and smoke. First time I saw people dying on the television live and I pray that it's the last.
- Lunarbunny, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2I recall going to watch the TV before leaving for school, after my mom told me that a plane had hit the WTC. As I was watching the news, I watched the second plane hit the WTC on live TV. Then, it cut over to a smoking Pentagon. I left for the bus, and the bus I was on had an AM/FM radio which the bus driver had tuned to an AM news station, on which they mentioned those jumping from the wreckage. My first period class was PE, but we ended up watching the news on one of those TV-carts a lot of schools have. We ended up seeing the tower collapse at school. I don't remember much more than that other than the atmosphere of fear every single person had the rest of that day and the fighter jets passing over my house that afternoon.
- TitanX13, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1i remember waking up and the first sight i saw was a replay of the first plane hitting the first tower.(i live in california) I had been sick for the past 2 nights. I was about to miss my first day of 7th grade.(i am not a freshman in college) i could tell you where every single person was in that house at that moment even before i moved. i spent the entire day watching the news. i would call my family and update them as i learned more. It was pretty scary for me because most of my family lives in new york and my uncle would occasionally work there. there are very few things that can send shivers down my spine. this is at the top of the list.

- GhengisKhan, on 03/22/2008, -2/+3I remember my mother-in-law calling my wife and I at about 6:30 am MST and imploring us to turn on the TV. We did so immediately and were horrified at what we saw. I had a moment of clarity and popped in a videotape into my VCR and just hit 'Record'. The thing ran out about 4 hours later but I got the second tower going down in real time. This will serve as a reminder to my children of that fateful day.

Everyone was silent just listening to report and I remember my head teacher just muttered "oh my god...". The rest of the day was like everyone elses. Watching tv trying to figure out what was going on.

- VacaN, on 03/21/2008, -12/+11I was in English class when the Principal came on the loud speaker to announce the events. Crazy day, I remember we spent the time for every class discussing the topic and some nutty Math teacher claiming that the Lincoln tunnel, and Sears tower were also attack, instantly scaring the ***** out of everyone. I also remember walking back home since all MTA transportation was canceled. And than of course seeing the collapse every 5 minutes on every channel.
- hokeywebb22, on 03/21/2008, -4/+3Exact opposite happened at my high school. The principal came over the loud speaker and told us there was an accident at the WTC but not to allow us to watch tv or talk to much about it because he didn't want rumors starting. And I still ended up hearing that a car bomb went off in front of the capital bulding.
- Netrilix, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Mine was somewhere in the middle. Our principal came over the loudspeaker, told us that the Twin Towers had been hit, and the Pentagon had been hit, and then we watched tv in every class for the next two days. Every student in the school was staring at whichever news station happened to be on.
- Netrilix, on 03/21/2008, -0/+4Damn missed the edit time. For some reason, the thing that stuck out most in my mind was standing out in my high school's courtyard a few days later. The ban on flying had just been lifted, and the first plane was flying over the school. I remember looking up, and the looking around and realizing every single person outside at the time was staring at the plane.
- tba2287, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Same here. My high school's administration decided to censor 9/11 reporting for fear of getting students too worked up and fearful about rumors. I didn't see any footage of the attacks until I got home because we were in lock down.
It would be impossible to try the same thing now, when so many students have Internet-ready phones.
- MScrip, on 03/21/2008, -3/+3I was in Ireland on a college trip, and we were supposed to return to the US in September 12th... that didn't happen. We didn't get to come home till the 22nd. Watching 9/11 from a foreign country gave us a different perspective on everything that was happening in the US. Needless to say... we enjoyed our extended vacation in Ireland and enjoyed the many pubs for an extra 10 days! Although we had plenty of make-up work to do in our college courses...
- solid12345, on 03/21/2008, -3/+2I had a class mate/friend come up to me saying "there is like 100,000 people dead or something"
I also remember people in the gym thinking Saddam or some other Arab dictator was behind it.

- diggcensored, on 03/21/2008, -4/+0Well lets take a look at scripture, being you provided no proof..
Luke 12:16-21 He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. He reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What will I do, because I don’t have room to store my crops?’ He said, ‘This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."‘ "But God said to him, ‘You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?’ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
So reepax is right, if there were any rich fools inside WTC they might have not went to heaven.. - NathanielJ, on 03/21/2008, -3/+1@diggcensored - I find it amazing that you are able to look up scripture like that when you clearly have no clue of its context or meaning.
- diggcensored, on 03/21/2008, -2/+4I completely understand it
The first point of the scripture is that if you spend all of your life preparing yourself worldly things in hopes of being secure you will not end up being secure. In the end God is all that matters in securing eternal life.
The 2nd part of the scripture is about your life being demanded of you at any moment, and that these worldly things will not be yours forever, so don't rely on them for happyness. If you rely on only these worldly things you are not rich twords God, and will that secure you eternal life? No.
But as for you, all you say is "you have no meaning of its context" without explaining any of the context. Which tells me you cannot explain its context. You merely state "you don't understand it" without enlightening anyone. Funny.

- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 03/21/2008, -2/+7Yup. It didn't change one thing. Actually, I take that back.
It did.
You see, 9-11 did not teach us that we were vulnerable. It did not teach the United States that it was invincible. We already knew that. We learned those things from pearl harbor. And thus, the only outcome of 9-11 was that we pass legislation that essentially nullifies our first amendment rights. We pass legislation that nullifies our fourth amendment right. And the fifth. And the sixth. And the eighth. And then we allow the government to spy on its own people. The patriot act did not make us more secure, it took away our freedoms. And we did not do this to guard against threats.
We did it out of fear. The catch here is that to submit to our fear, to submit to terror, would mean that the terrorists have won. After all, the term terrorist by definition means one who strikes fear and terror. So instead we disguise our fear in the name of "safety" and "security". And we move one step closer to communism, as the government begins to collect data on everyone in its country. We fuel discrimination for fear that those of other races are here to blow us up. We collect every shred of data we can find on our citizens, and even our guests, asking them absurdities such as their sexual and religious orientation. And in the end, we are still not any safer.
I am not advocating that we simply be passive and allow ourselves to be attacked. But I am saying that we overreacted. Liberty and security are independent of each other. We can have both if we do things right. But I do believe that, for the moment, the terrorists are winning. Bin Laden said in his last press release in 2004 that his goal was to bankrupt the US. And he has. The terror and fear caused by the terrorist has not only echoed, but grown in the 7 years since that acted. And while I do firmly believe that this fear will pass in time, I think it is important that we remember how we acted during this time. Remember how we acted during the first and second red scare.
Say no to terror. Say no to McCarthyism. Say no to fear. That is how we will protect ourselves. That is how we will protect our children, and ensure the survival and success of liberty.

- exomni, on 03/21/2008, -3/+219/11 or no 9/11, "the closest some of us will ever get to heaven" isn't exactly a very tasteful catchphrase.

- ledain, on 03/21/2008, -23/+5Bush knocked down the towers.
- ExRe, on 03/21/2008, -3/+8Bush is too stupid to do it. He couldn't knock his way out of a lego house.
- Wargalas, on 03/21/2008, -4/+2And I knocked up your mom and here you are. I knew she shouldn't have done weed while pregnant. I told her it would produce an idiot baby, and I was right.

- Mothrog, on 03/22/2008, -3/+3And your uncle knocked up your mother.
- coheedcollapse, on 03/21/2008, -2/+15Sort of off-topic but on-topic: I remember the first time I saw the Lone Gunman Pilot how freaky it was.
The whole episode is about a government plot to run a plane into the WTC via remote control. I think the crescendo is when they finally identified the target as the World Trade Center.
For anyone interested that hasn't seen it yet:

- lohphat, on 03/21/2008, -0/+210 years apart. It was poorly directed but the sets and costumes warrant recognition.

- demonsnake69, on 03/21/2008, -9/+6People who are looking deep into that brochure are ***** dumb. All it is marketing hyperbole in regards to the height of the Twin Towers while they were still up. Sure it does turn out to be an ironic statement nowadays, but so do a lot of other things when you think about it.
- Owwmykneecap, on 03/21/2008, -9/+25***** Iraqi's why did the have to blow them up..
