- SakiMateo, on 02/01/2009, -2/+57Note that in addition to the shock-collar, he also used cold showers and drowning as punishments.
He got off easy if you ask me.
Oh, and in response to the comments "you'd think the kids woulda learnt" and "I bet his kids are well-behaved"...
You may find this surprising, but corporal punishment is not exactly 100% effective, no matter how cruel it is inflicted.
Different people have different reactions to pain. Although what this father did is beyond mere pain. It is torture. - JackondaRocks, on 02/01/2009, -2/+54Don't taze me, dad!
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -14/+61Can't wait to see what the guys at the state pen are gonna have to say about this.
- absolutelytrue, on 05/26/2009, -23/+66Shock collars are cruel for animals.. why would you put one on your kid? Crazy.
- crackwassist, on 01/31/2009, -13/+5516 years? wow. I mean. . . they might be really ***** kids. . . Not excusing but SIXTEEN?
- aballrap, on 01/31/2009, -3/+44O that came as a shock
- spazzm2008, on 02/01/2009, -3/+43I agree that this guy is a dick and deserves to get it good and hard.
But this apparent glee over the upcoming violent rape of another human being is a bit sick.
Seriously, WTF? - m771401, on 02/01/2009, -2/+38When properly and responsibly used e-collars are more humane than slip leads (choker chains) or even pinch/pronged collars. The slip leads and pinch collars can cause damage to the trachea on a dog.
What they have in common is like any tool if used improperly can and will cause damage physically and mentally.
Your comment is clearly one of misconceived perception, lack of education, and a mental block over the word "shock". - HookmasterCH47, on 01/31/2009, -4/+38Yeah, and they sure as hell didn't act out at Applebee's either.
- cawpin, on 02/01/2009, -5/+31They are NOT cruel for animals. It is a tiny shock that basically just gets their attention. Go back to your PETA message board.
- DeskFlyer, on 02/01/2009, -1/+25Wow what a detailed article...
- sjbdallas, on 02/01/2009, -5/+26Did it work?
- SEN5241, on 02/01/2009, -8/+28I bet his kids are well-behaved.
- howrudeareyou, on 01/31/2009, -6/+24Somewhere, Britney Spears is saying, "See, y'all... I ain't as bad a parent as him!"
- ohiomama, on 02/01/2009, -4/+20i'm a big fan of cesar millan and he says the same thing. it's not what tool you're using for dog training, it's the intention and energy behind it. someone that strikes a dog with a newspaper in an angry way is doing more damage to the dog that an owner that uses an electronic collar to correct an unacceptable behavior in what millan calls a "calm-assertive" manner.
- lead2thehead, on 02/01/2009, -0/+16Why is "train" in quotes? It's actually very effective. My parents used an invisible fence to teach their dogs to stay in the yard. They only needed the collars for 6 months. Now, they never leave the back yard.
- rft3rd, on 02/01/2009, -1/+17Ohio is obviously void of lower-case letters as well. That son of a bitch.
- DirtPile, on 01/31/2009, -7/+21What's the problem here?
- anklesnap, on 01/31/2009, -7/+21This guy is a total dick!
- lead2thehead, on 02/01/2009, -1/+15Most people overestimate the jolt you get from a training collar. It's not a taser. It's just a tingle. It's only large enough to be slightly uncomfortable. You have to get the proper size for your dog. You wouldn't put a Pit Bull collar on your Shih Tzu... that would be cruel.
- vault, on 02/01/2009, -3/+17It's child abuse beyond any form of discipline. Clearly torture especially when you add in the other stuff in the article...guy deserves the 16 years.
- Po0py, on 02/01/2009, -4/+17I'd say thats about right. Although murderers can and do get less than half of that.
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -0/+13It's a good thing he didn't waterboard the kids, or else he would've been acquitted.
- HPCELarry, on 02/01/2009, -2/+15Read TFA. "The judge said Liskany punished the children in 2006 and 2007 by putting them in cold showers, holding them underwater and using the shock collar, which is commonly used to train dogs."
And the kids were 5, 12 and 14. Sounds about right to me. - inactive, on 02/01/2009, -1/+13They're most certainly not cruel if used properly. They're not more painful to a dog than a proper leash correction. It's more about startling the dog and getting their attention to make them snap out of it rather than electrocuting the dog as a punishment (which is NOT what e-collars are made for).
- roastedbagel, on 02/01/2009, -0/+12Did the submitter really need to add the "News, Headlines and Latest Stories on Yahoo! News " in the description?
- TripinVA, on 02/01/2009, -0/+12I don't think it's legal to hold your dogs underwater and then use the collar on them. That's what happened here.
- haikuFU, on 02/01/2009, -0/+11E-collars are hardly cruel for animals. There are two ways to use them:
Incorrect way - Crank it up, zap the dog on continuous until he complies. This is called escape training, it's unfair to the dog, and the result is a dog that will only comply with commands when the collar is on
Correct way - Turn collar all the way down, hold the continuous button down and turn up slowly until the dog looks around/looks at the ground/does something to show you that he notices it. You give a command, if the dog doesn't comply within 1 second, you give a single nick with it. The result is a dog that knows you are in control the entire time.
My collar goes from 0-127 for intensity levels. It's currently set on 23. You cannot even feel it on your hand, and on your neck it only tingles, it does NOT hurt. The ONLY time I've ever turned it up all the way and hit continuous is when the dog's life was in danger because he tried to chase a car.
The reality of it is, even though you may not agree e-collars or prong collars, they are absolutely necessary for dogs with high drive (GSD's, belgian malinois, pit bulls, etc). You cannot train these dogs appropriately using so called All Positive training methods, and these devices can save the dog's life by keeping them from chasing cars, going onto a road, or even chasing down a child and being put down for it.
Choke chains are cruel. Autopsies on dogs that wore a choke chain their whole life had major damage to muscle tissue in their neck and their trachea. I have both a prong and an e-collar. I've put it on myself, as it's only fair I know what the result is if I'm going to be using it on the dog. Neither solution is painful when used correctly. - coadyj, on 02/01/2009, -1/+12its shocking!
- cawpin, on 02/01/2009, -0/+11Ohio = The original Florida. Get it straight.
- Tongeh, on 02/01/2009, -1/+11Apparently he first tried to use one of those hi-pitched dog whistles.. but they didn't listen... :(
- tk0680, on 02/01/2009, -0/+10"Hey, take the wheel Jayden-or-whatever-the-*****-your-name-is."
- linagee, on 02/01/2009, -0/+10That'll get you a whippin'.
- mess7777, on 02/01/2009, -5/+15So if they aren't cruel to dogs, why can't we use them on kids.
Just find the "right" voltage.
Why not try training your dog without these outdated methods.
If it is not ok as a punishment on people, it isn't ok on dogs either. - Mudcrutch, on 02/01/2009, -0/+10At least we know where the CAPS key is.
- lead2thehead, on 02/01/2009, -0/+9They explode if you try to take them off.
- bsmang, on 02/01/2009, -0/+8Oh that's so wrong.
Dugg. - barryiggins, on 02/01/2009, -1/+9your BDSM adventures don't count
- Atheyst, on 02/01/2009, -2/+1016 years in prison cruel?
- tk0680, on 02/01/2009, -1/+9/terrified of the world.
- MadN, on 02/01/2009, -0/+8So, he should have used a Tazer?
- altgeeky1, on 02/01/2009, -0/+7I kind of agree, but only because I I think 2 years + forced sterilisation is a more just punishment.
- phybere, on 02/01/2009, -1/+8What an electrifying verdict
- dawood82, on 02/01/2009, -10/+17But it's perfectly legal to 'train' your animals with them...
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -2/+9Good. Don't hurt people, especially kids.
- WinZiggy, on 02/01/2009, -2/+9Using a shock collar on your kids is wrong? Huh. . .
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -0/+7Wow you're an idiot. This guy would force his kids in cold showers and hold them underwater in addition to using a shock collar, and you're okay with that? Society should most certainly NOT be tolerant of whatever a father sees fit, because quite often, fathers are not fit to be fathers, especially when they TORTURE their kids and grossly abuse them. Let's hope for the benefit of society that you never, ever reproduce.
- Ender008, on 02/01/2009, -0/+7Dr. Robotnik?
- h0ser, on 02/01/2009, -8/+15you'd think the kids woulda learnt after the first time they got the shock collar put on.
