- eocarroll, on 10/28/2009, -4/+1620Silly police officer, thinking that traffic laws apply equally to everyone.
- nahsrocketeer75, on 10/28/2009, -4/+952Why wait for the election? Certainly an abuse of power this egregious should be grounds to have the mayor removed from office immediately.
- mnocket, on 10/28/2009, -1/+804Great timing! There's an election coming up and people can respond with their votes.
- Bichengyi, on 10/28/2009, -2/+591FTA: She said you know you just gave the mayor's son a ticket? And I said "Oh crap."
He should have said, then I guess he should not have been breaking the law...it is wrong that he should even have had the feeling like he did something out of line by issuing a valid citation. - holychicken, on 10/28/2009, -1/+565That is such a clear case of abuse of power I can't imagine how criminal charges do not apply to the mayor's action.
Honestly, if I were on that police force, I would look for every little thing the mayor might be violating and ticket him for it. - swordedge, on 10/28/2009, -2/+523Arrest the Mayor for Obstruction of Justice. The idea that you can't write a traffic ticket for fear of losing your job is definitely "obstruction of justice." You can go to jail for years for this charge.

source: http://www.stocktontown.org/council.htm - defteats, on 10/29/2009, -0/+286FTA: "Another Stockton city council member, Kendall Thomas, told KSL News the mayor is conducting the investigation into any wrongdoing in the incident and has not consulted any of the council members."
So he is conducting an investigation about himself into wrongdoing? I don't think I read that wrong. Definitely a conflict of interest. - wolfpackofone, on 10/29/2009, -1/+263He didn't feel like he was out of line, he merely had the sense to realize this would blow back on him in a negative way. He is actually lucky that the Mayor retaliated in such an overt manner, because he could have really made this cop's life a living hell.

- u3b3rg33k, on 10/29/2009, -4/+194this is not china. no special treatment for party members.
- Corinthos, on 10/29/2009, -0/+185I remember in high school there was an outrage about a prom after party. It got busted and everyone there was either arrested or had their parents called and issued tickets. Except the sheriffs son. Many watched as the cop radios it in and told the kid to get out of there. He bragged about it at school on monday... well thats when someone sent the story and pictures of his ass to the local news. He was also over 18 and a picture of him drinking straight from the keg was on the front page of the paper. Sheriff resigned the following friday.
- tgc1, on 10/29/2009, -4/+171Is it just me, or did the Mayor seem like he was trying to intimidate an Officer? Hmmm.... I wonder what kind of charges he can be brought up on? Someone mentioned Obstruction of Justice. Maybe interfering with police business? I dunno. Maybe there's a charge in there for just plain being a ***** douche?
If that Mayor isn't fired on the spot and the Police Officer in question reinstated then we have a real problem. - Gareth321, on 10/29/2009, -17/+159Who the ***** signs their posts on Digg? Your username is on the left of the post - IN BOLD!
- gankige, on 10/28/2009, -4/+138There should be a law against things like this. The mayor should get put away for a spell, or at least a serious fine.
- NSResponder, on 10/29/2009, -26/+149You know, if that officer really wanted to make his point, he should run for mayor. He just might win.
-jcr - captnkurt, on 10/29/2009, -3/+116Yay! This new "signature" trend is gonna save me a ton of ASCII typing!
-Pedobear - PhilliesBlunt, on 10/29/2009, -1/+111True story, my cousin once gave thought to becoming a cop in Dayton. Took the ethics test, and one of the questions was "If you pull the Mayor over, and he's obviously drunk, what do you do?" The 'correct' answer: escort him home. She lost all interest after that.
- Ninh, on 10/29/2009, -3/+107Boss Hogg in the flesh.
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+103So, when a totally flagarant incident comes to light - your solution is: well, corruption is common, we shouldnt fight against it.
Yeah, that is a good idea - let's be defeatist, and give up completely on fighting corruption. - uberduger, on 10/29/2009, -0/+101Is anyone allowed in? That would be awesome if loads of random people arrive from around the state with banners and tshirts to show support for the cop.
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+99The Utah State Police need to be investigating this. Even if the cop gets his job back, and the kid gets the ticket, that should not be the end of it - there should be further penalties for such a terrible abuse of power.
- NSResponder, on 10/29/2009, -24/+122This should end the mayor's career. This isn't a feudal society yet.
-jcr - acknotSW, on 10/29/2009, -0/+87This story perfectly represents about half of what is wrong with this country.
I'm not sure which bothers me more, the fact that the mayor fired him for giving his kid a ticket or the statement by the officer that "he didn't know he was his son" as if he would never have given the kid a ticket if he had known who he was. - spworm, on 10/29/2009, -1/+86I don't sign my posts, but I like to add random letters
-hko - Jpatano, on 10/29/2009, -0/+81umm... what he did IS illegal... you can't fire a police officer for giving your son a speeding ticket. It's a classic example of abuse of power, and politicians who feel that the rules don't apply to them. These people think they are above the common peasant. The fact that the mayors' son... a 30 year old man, went crying to daddy because he got a ticket for something he did wrong makes me think he's most likely had the silver spoon in his mouth his entire life.
however, the worst that will likely come of this is that he will not be re-elected. - ketedford, on 10/29/2009, -6/+81OFFICER: Pull Over!
DRIVER: No! It's a cardigan! - darkwing81, on 10/29/2009, -0/+75I had to reread that part also. I think they mean he is conducting the investigation into the officers wrong doing.
I hope the whole town conducts an investigation into Mayor McCheese's wrong doing - tdmeth, on 10/29/2009, -1/+75On the way home from the Tooele demolition derby a couple months ago, my friend and I got pulled over by this officer. He ticketed my friend for speeding. I gotta say, this guy was a really top-notch officer. Professional, courteous, and understanding. He could have got her for speeding (20 over) and no registration. He just did the speeding and knocked it down to 10 over. If we had more cops like this, there would be a whole metric crapton less of the "F the police" stuff we see around here.
- kanojo1969, on 10/29/2009, -3/+76Does anyone else get the mental image of Boss Hogg from the Dukes of Hazzard when thinking about this 'mayor'? Seems pretty obvious that he treats the town as his own personal amusement park and every city employee knows it - otherwise why would a police officer think like that?
Normally I'm all for giving cops a hard time but it's difficult to believe a Mayor would be so deluded as to think he can fire this guy for doing his job, and then when the press calls to enquire about it, tell them that the mayor is conducting the investigation.
He's investigating himself? I bet Rod Blagoivich wishes he had thought of that.
Isn't it quaint how the citizens voice their disapproval but are still overtly polite to the mayor about it - "It did seem a little harsh" - No, you dope, it was a criminal abuse of power. That mayor should right now be in a jail cell.
But no.... apparently it would have been OK if he had just made the deputy crawl like a dog through some poison ivy, or just beat him around the head a few times... but *sacking him* was too much...
Damn hicks. - Moralogic, on 10/29/2009, -0/+73Unluckily history shows 3nder99 as being right, but we the people need to change that.
This guy needs to be pulled from office NOW. Don't let him do his "investigation", and let the board take over until the election is over. At least they support the officer on his actions, which he should have done regardless of who the guy was that he pulled over, even a fellow officer. - brblol, on 10/29/2009, -0/+73I'm pretty sure there are laws against things like this.
- OfoarHeffinsake, on 10/29/2009, -6/+78Yeah, it's pretty lame.
-Neil deGrasse Tyson - JackSchittt, on 10/29/2009, -2/+69Why is the mayor conducting the investigation into his own wrongdoing?
- mmzplanet, on 10/29/2009, -0/+66Mayor investigating himself? Will probably be the only member in this committee.....hmmm
Jim: As ranking number 2 I am starting a committee to determine the validity of the two committees and I am the sole member of the committee. We’ll act on this now.
Dwight: Ok this is stupid.
Jim: Can you please keep it down? I’m in session. [long pause] I’ve determined this committee is valid.
Dwight: No, no, no. Wait. Permission to join the Validity Committee.
Jim: [thinks about it] Permission denied.
Dwight: Dammit! - cCPanda, on 10/29/2009, -2/+67 The fact that a 29 year old man-boy has to have his daddy fight his fights for him still is ridiculous.
- NSResponder, on 10/29/2009, -17/+78The mayor has committed a crime. The question is whether any of his fellow politicians will bother to prosecute him.
-jcr - Moralogic, on 10/29/2009, -1/+54That is not the way it is suppose to be. It is ONLY suppose to be foreign diplomats when you look at the laws and treaties.
When things started out, and even 30 years ago, police officers were held to the same standard as everyone else. No special treatment, no exceptions. That is the way it is suppose to be. Police officers are citizens, just like politicians. They get nor deserve special treatment. - jsmith39, on 10/29/2009, -4/+57@ Gareth321
Exactly, I don't care what others are doing, I dugg you up.
-jjs - inactive, on 10/29/2009, -6/+55he's a good cop - but he believes himself to be above the law
WTF - ROBINEW, on 10/29/2009, -2/+50Send the mayor an email or give him a call.
Dan Rydalch, Mayor-- 882-0335, email: ckrydalch@rt.nl - zeth006, on 10/29/2009, -0/+48Correct. The law applies more equally to some than it does to others.
- Moralogic, on 10/29/2009, -3/+50Giggity!
- gq - MidnightReign, on 10/29/2009, -0/+47I ***** love that we let officials of all stripes investigate their own actions.
"Hrm, well, let's see... I suspended that prick for messing with my kid. Was that wrong? No. Okay, investigation closed. I exonerate myself." - RiperSnifle, on 10/29/2009, -0/+47Dear Mayor Dan:
I heard the election is soon. Better luck next time.
Me. - enclaved, on 10/29/2009, -2/+48if they can even check email.
The <title> of all their webpages is 'New Page 1'
I feel bad for the residents. - DodgeV83, on 10/29/2009, -0/+45I know someone who works for the government in DC. He found a meter maid giving him a parking ticket and approached him, told him he worked for the government, and the meter maid quickly tore up the ticket.
When he got back to work, he told his co-workers the story and they all said "haha, you'll just get your ticket in the mail!"
Sure enough, he did. - Apokalyps2547, on 10/29/2009, -4/+47This story is an example of a good cop getting shafted for doing the right thing.
Your comment is still an attempt to throw cops under the bus. Why? - TheSkunkMonkey, on 10/29/2009, -0/+43Ok, anyone else find it odd that the email the mayor has listed on the official town website is a Netherlands addy?
Why don't these officials have OFFICIAL emails from which to do business such as mayor@stocktontown.com, etc.?
The citizens need to start electing intelligent and competent people and have them hire a real IT professional instead of some member's 13yo kid to handle their IT needs. -
