- pixburgher, on 07/04/2009, -52/+527Are you kidding me?
The cop was totally out of line and got what he deserved.
Also, the announcer for TruTV is awful.
I honestly don't know how anyone could be sympathetic toward the officer in this video - Bhima, on 07/04/2009, -42/+357This is interesting on a number of levels:
The policeman is interfering with the people getting into the hospital, despite the fact than anything he would truly need to do can take place after admission. So he is the one, with training no less, escalating the confrontation.
The announcer (and the premise of the TV show) is excited by the possibility of confrontation and completely discounts the possibility that people trying to get into the hospital don't have health insurance which would cover a ride in an ambulance to the hospital.
The previous commenter "brbeaird" who side with the police despite the mitigating circumstances depicted in the clip.
Folks would do well to watch this a few times. This is exactly what a police state looks like. One film on it's own doesn't really mean anything. However, films like this are a weekly feature on Digg. Grannies Tazed; Police Brutality; Death in Custody; Warterboarding Suspects. It's time Americans recognize what they've done: They've enthusiastically created a police state. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -23/+257That police officer is an *****.
- rebotfc, on 07/04/2009, -17/+221Quite obviously the cop's first obligation was to protect the life of the person in the car and ensure he was given immediate care. The guy could of had a heart attack whilst his wife was driving, or potentially have internal injuries. He has a duty of care and he failed in that duty.
Once the immediate danger was dealt with he then could of arrested the wife for whatever offence she may have committed.
The fact that the guy turned out to be not badly hurt and then assaulted the officer is irrelevant. The officer did not know that.
This case could just as easily of resulted in the death of the passenger if he had a heart attack, with the police holding up the driver.. What would people be saying then? - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -26/+227Stopping a man from going to the hospital? He deserved to get caned.
- KenSPT, on 07/04/2009, -22/+183I don't know what pisses me off more, the cop who's being an *****, or the TruTV narrator who makes it seem as if the cop is in the right.
Cops are frickin' bullies, plain and simple. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -14/+170Why is the announcer sympathetic to the cop? They're 10 feet from the hospital door and he won't let her get a wheelchair? What a douche bag.
- drifter, on 07/04/2009, -12/+166"why didn't you call an ambulance?" Is her serious? That would easily cost a couple hundred, look at the car they are driving they obviously don't have the cash. Secondly, maybe he is injured but not to the extent of an ambulance being needed.
I don't get why he couldn't let the guy in and then yell at the woman after. You know what's sad I really think this would have been different if it was a white woman driving a Mercedes. Ya know, the ones who can afford an ambulance. - frankenfag, on 07/04/2009, -14/+158Relax while I bully you.
- twiztidsinz, on 07/04/2009, -3/+114I wouldn't say he walked.. so much as hobbled...
From the video, the cop put his hands on the woman first.. and that's when the guy got out of the car. The cop kept fidgeting with his nightstick like he was going to beat the woman numerous times.
A citizen makes a threatening gesture and they're a danger.
A cop makes a threatening gesture and they're defending themselves.
Gotta love double standards. - DrakeGTA, on 07/04/2009, -7/+116I agree with you, there is no reason the old man couldn't have been wheeled into the ER and then the cop could harass the woman.
- ConcernedCanuck, on 07/04/2009, -9/+115remember Rodney King? Well, he was beaten by a cop and everyone rioted... now beatings are a weekly occurrence... and people can't seem to notice because they are busy watching Americas next top *****.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -10/+88Maybe if he weren't being a ***** to these people.
- spazoidspam, on 07/04/2009, -5/+77You mean it's cops like this that ruin it for all of us. The officer needs to be fired so he can work at McDonald's. Since it is obviously all he should be qualified for. There is absolutely no reason to stop a person from entering the hospital, he could have gotten any information needed after the doctors have examined the man. The officer turned a simple situation into this all because he was a bully looking to start a fight with an elderly couple in need of medical attention. It truely sickens me.
- brickbat, on 07/04/2009, -10/+82What really annoys me is, ok even if, by some massive stretch of the imagination we admit that it is ok to arrest the woman right there and not let her into to the hospital - Why the ***** does he then block the guy from entering the hospital himself? Where is the ***** logic in that? It's a shame that ***** cane broke so easily.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -25/+95God I hate cops. 90% of people in that line of work are *****, you'd have to be to sign up for a job that doesn't pay worth a ***** but lets you carry a gun all the time. The 10% that do it out of a real desire to help are vastly outnumbered.
- Coven, on 07/04/2009, -2/+64fidgeting with his nightstick? He approached her with his gun drawn!
- dpknc84, on 07/04/2009, -2/+61Probably because most of the crap on TruTV is supplied by police video. They don't want to anger their revenue stream.
- mdmcgee, on 07/04/2009, -7/+61Maybe people act like this because cops are so darn aggressive. It's the typical reaction to the schoolyard bully. You put up with it for so long and then you lash out and defend yourself, put the bully back in his place.
- thomdano, on 07/04/2009, -4/+57are the cops trained to prevent people from getting to the hospital? this seems to happen quite a bit. if the cop chases someone to the hospital, it might be an emergency. figure it out.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -3/+53cops like this aren't cops to help people, they are cops to be unassailable pricks because that is what the courts have tried to make them.
- sb66, on 07/04/2009, -14/+581) That ***** cop is an ***** who should be disciplined over hassling that woman before letting the husband get medical attention. Typical stupid, power hungry pig. (yes I realize there are good cops too)
2) The announcer is a ***** who would probably narrate nazis rounding up jews sympathetically to the nazis.
3) The woman could have pulled over and told the cop what was going on, then got an escort to the hospital. Though that cop is such an ass that maybe he still would have delayed her. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -3/+46yes. he denied treatment to someone innocent. even with the probable cause he had, it was not a threatening situation, the woman clearly drove safe to the hospital, and the cop was the one who escalated the situation into a hostile one. at that point, it was justified for the victim to strike back.
- WeBeGood, on 07/04/2009, -1/+43And the outcome for the caning is....
http://www.michbar.org/opinions/appeals/2009/06160 ...
...16 months to 15 years in prison. - PCCake, on 07/04/2009, -6/+47Is TruVideo propaganda for police?
If I saw my mother or sister being harassed by a cop like that I would be out of the van if both my legs were broken, and do anything i could to stop it. It's called adrenaline, and it does amazing things.
The cop should be fired. - Electric_Sheep, on 07/04/2009, -4/+43You have to PAY to use an ambulance? Jeez. That's a public service here, like the police, school or fire services
- digey, on 07/04/2009, -6/+45I disagree, both sides were wrong, however both sides were acting with a rational action. Allow me to explain.
Lady:
1. Could have easily pulled over, and probably got a police escort to the hospital if her husband needed it. However, the cop could have also made the lady sit there while he wrote her a ticket. So to prevent that speeding makes sense.
2. She made it and is only a few feet away from just need to get her husband in, and doesn't have time to deal with the cop.
Cop:
1. A CAR (completely unknown to him the current situation) WON'T STOP!!!! This is a immediate threat, and he SHOULD have approached with his gun drawn. The only fact he knows about the car, is they are not currently obeying the law.
2. Gun drawn, once again the car was a threat and he had to be prepared. IF you noticed he put his gun away a few seconds in the argument.
3. Stopping everyone, once again he is trying to get control on the situation. He doesn't know what is going on, and once the lady says her husband "been crushed" and then he proceeds to walk out, that parties trust is in question. Therefore he was forced to stop them.
4. While trying to get control on situation he got assaulted, plain and simple. What did the old man think? Hit him and then he would just let me go?
Situation:
1. Not stopping, escalated this situation, but it was totally understandable why the lady didn't stop.
2. Approaching with the gun, was just him reaction to a situation where he had no information on, and currently they wouldn't obey the law.
3. Stopping everyone was he way of trying to get control of the situation. Once he has control I would like to believe he would have helped the old man, simple fact is resiting is never the best options even if the cop is in the wrong, he is just trying to do his job. - KenSPT, on 07/04/2009, -4/+40If my wife, or Father, or Mother were injured enough where I needed to rush them to the ER, I'm not pulling over so some arrogant cop can tell me I went 10 mph over the speed limit, or ran a red light; it's just not gonna' happen.
Cops are supposed to protect and serve the public, which means his first priority should be to make sure the injured individual gets inside, and then deal with the wife.
It's obvious that woman wasn't going to run off, nor was she trying to. From the way this video looked, the woman was blocked in by the patrol cars anyways. This confrontation wouldn't have happened if the cop took 1 minute to show some common sense, instead of displaying his "authority".
Cops are bullies or *****. I have never once met a cop who didn't act better than me, tougher than me, or in some hilarious cases; smarter than me. Cops worry more about flashing their badge and acting all "big and bad" than they do about protecting the public.
Call that an unfair generalization if you must, but until a cop proves me wrong that's the way I feel. - omgTHEPATRIOTS, on 07/04/2009, -10/+42That cop deserved it for trying to interfere with admission to the hospital.
Police really are the biggest and most dangerous gang of thugs in America. Why are we paying them to be ***** like this? In NYC these sort of incidents happen daily and officers can act with impunity... plowing into a crowd of people, tazing old ladies, stopping people and making up ***** on the spot, shooting someone 50 times... we have a serious problem, America, - nmoulana, on 07/04/2009, -15/+46That cop is seriously one dumb son of a bitch. I will personally fund a lawsuit against him.
- barkus, on 07/04/2009, -1/+31In a normal world the cop would jump out of his car to help the injured person inside.
- TurboSquid, on 07/04/2009, -0/+29Except here you don't have to worry about how much cash you have in your bank account when you get injured or sick. Yes, our taxes pay for it, and we get taxed a lot and some of us complain about it, but when you need a trip to the hospital you get one.
- themacjedi, on 07/04/2009, -7/+36The cop should have helped the man into to hospital and then evaluated whether arresting the woman was necessary.
What the cop did was bully the woman, it doesn't matter if she was lying because the cop wouldn't know.
And the narrator was a d-bag. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -3/+31exactly thomdano. any normal person would have suspected there might be a reason to make a straight line to the hospital. this is clearly a case of an over zelous cop who thinks he is some sort of god, and that all should bow to his commands. there are always exceptions, in every case, and this is definitely one of them. +100 for that old man whackin that cop with his cane.
- loathing, on 07/04/2009, -6/+34***** the police
- dman24752, on 07/04/2009, -0/+27I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's against the law for anyone to block another person's entrance into the hospital.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -4/+30@ AaronPDX, now re-read what Bhima said. He cited the daily occurrence of things like this, not this single incident.
- danibobanny, on 07/04/2009, -2/+27If you don't have insurance, you can be looking at a $10,000+ bill here in the US (depending on the location).
- B1665r, on 07/04/2009, -7/+30When police are illegally arresting someone you are within your rights to kill the police officer. That is american law.
- TexMexRex, on 07/04/2009, -1/+24"And the outcome for the caning is...", and three previous felony convictions is:
- srs2000, on 07/04/2009, -3/+25... He is to put the well being of the person claimed to be hurt first. He could have asked hospital staff to come outside to check on the guy.
YOU DON'T OBSTRUCT PEOPLE TRYING TO GET INTO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. - DulcetTone, on 07/04/2009, -4/+26Tweet out some regular updates on this effort. I don't use twitter, but that's ok cause you're not going to do anything.
- KenSPT, on 07/04/2009, -6/+28As soon as she got out of the car she said, "My husband needs help."; at that moment the cop needs to flip around his priorities and make sure the injured individual gets inside. If it comes to fruition where she was lying, then that can be dealt with after.
- stotty, on 07/04/2009, -3/+25She was probably panicked by the concern for her husband. People do irrational things when panicked. This cop is a jerk and could have easily escorted them into the hospital for care and dealt with any contraventions afterward.
- megaton, on 07/04/2009, -28/+49I'm going to be buried into oblivion for this, but here goes...
A police state? Really?
Let's say you're right, and stories/videos like this show up on digg once weekly. (Which is an exaggeration, as they only show up once every few weeks, and certainly aren't exclusive to the United States. But I'll work with you.) Let's also assume that for each one of those reports, there are 10 others that we don't hear about. That's ~520 instances of police brutality per year.
With a population of about 300 million people, using your inflated numbers, we're looking at... about 0.00000173% of the population being brutalized. (That's less than 2 millionths of a percent.)
You have a better chance of being mugged in the Oklahoma countryside. Hardly a police state.
You want a police state? Go look at China. - ray4389, on 07/04/2009, -1/+22I agree--they could have been lying--that's why you follow them in and get the info afterward. A policeman is a civil servant--that means his priority should be to help people be safe, so he should have let them into the hospital first. It isn't like he can't discuss the violation afterward.
- cuervoman914, on 07/04/2009, -8/+27always distrust cops, no way around it. think of them of legalized thugs.
- indraroop, on 07/04/2009, -6/+25Love it how the ***** TruTV announcer actually *sides* with the cop on this, when all the cop had to do was watch the lady admit her husband and then can her.
- TaylorSPL, on 07/04/2009, -1/+20Oh you mean like providing a public service?
- danibobanny, on 07/04/2009, -1/+20To be fair, some of them really ARE quite nice, especially when they're just getting started. They have the wide-eyed naivety to think that they are going to save the world and keep the streets safe for their families and communities. Then they get a huge dose of nearly unlimited power, and are exposed to a system where they can basically do anything they want with impunity. Year after year, they see their fellow officers who are corrupt and evil get promoted over them; they see tons of nepotism and cronysim. They deal with lying dirtbags a majority of their day -- whether it's criminals on the street or criminals with a badge. It's really no wonder that so many of them turn bad. The police force is almost a douchebag factory when you think about it.
