- sheeats, on 05/26/2009, -1/+45Flash mobs...that hurt people? Our flash mobs just have pillow fights. I don't want to live in this crazy, violent flash mob universe in which Google seems to exist.
- ImTheChaz, on 05/27/2009, -1/+29Nicole Wong AKA Captain Obvious...
- kplo, on 05/26/2009, -2/+24Twitter will kill us all!
- rob2oo4, on 05/27/2009, -0/+18Watch the guy next to her, his eyes will bug you out
- theOster, on 05/27/2009, -2/+18that's kinda like saying i hate the internet coz 4chan is on it. idiots that post the minutia of their ***** lives don't need to be followed. but for tracking topics (esp breaking ones like trials and legislation goings on) it's pretty cool. i was keeping tabs on the cupcake rollout via several twitterers. i'd suggest to anyone to try searching for things on twitter and see how you like it before you relegate yourself to the idea that it's all about dave's cereal choice.
- netneutrality, on 05/27/2009, -4/+17Her hand has a mind of its own.
- waspbr, on 05/27/2009, -0/+12Dugg for creepy bug-eyed dude, (2:06-08)
- jeremyduffy, on 05/27/2009, -5/+16wow that was boring.
- m0nkeybl1tz, on 05/26/2009, -0/+8Haha, I noticed that too. I guess she meant "flash mob mobs".
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -1/+9What about the dangers of Google?
- viol999, on 05/27/2009, -2/+10If Google owned Twitter Nicole Wong would have no issues with it. There is more danger of being bored to death from Nicole Wongs' presentation than from Twitter.
- billricardi, on 05/27/2009, -0/+7Wow, the comments so far make it clear that:
A) Some people won't bother to watch the whole program if they can just make smarmy comments on the 3 minute clip instead.
B) Some people only care about corporations policing themselves when its THEM getting ***** over. If its the other guy getting reamed by unfair corporate practices, harassment and discrimination, and scams, its apparently either boring or funny. But when those same people are victims, THEN they scream holy hell.
I'll just say this: Give a damn now, before it is your turn to be victimized, and perhaps you can avoid your turn all together. And watch the whole presentation before you pass judgment. - GraceHead, on 05/27/2009, -1/+8Hey Google, sometimes I'm paranoid too.
- BingoPower, on 05/27/2009, -1/+7My synopsis:
1) Guy on left doesn't want to be there, occasionally nods to imply he's still awake.
2) Girl on the right talks alot of *****. - souLLy, on 05/27/2009, -0/+6Yeah socially powered sites suck... oh wait
- Myztry, on 05/27/2009, -5/+11"we do the very best with the principles we have"
That is what sets Google apart. No other leading Internet company could use those words in that context, and not be drowned out by jeering laughter. "Don't be evil" may be a simple principle, but without such principals - those words would have no positive meaning. - quomen, on 05/27/2009, -4/+10wtf is she talking about..
- idontevencare, on 05/27/2009, -1/+6WE'LL DO IT LIVE!!!!
- borez, on 05/27/2009, -2/+7So the gist of that was: we're gonna try some new stuff and if it doesn't work then we'll try some other new stuff till the new stuff works.
Great. - opiniastrous, on 05/27/2009, -2/+7Champ there are plenty of good reasons to use Twitter and plenty of interesting ways people do use Twitter. If you think some people are uninteresting or that their twits are useless, than just don't follow them. You wouldn't even know they're there.
- conscioussomber, on 05/27/2009, -2/+7This is how the world ends. Not with a bang, but a twitter.
- buddyfarr, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4uh, when you see the word twitter then don't read it. simple as that.
I care because you don't care someone had a bad day why??
If you don't like it, don't read it. You don't have to add a post that you don't like reading these posts. Then you are as bad as the ones you hate. - john2kx, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4agreed, not enough wrestling, explosions and anal sex.
- buddyfarr, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4yes, but what is the OTHER hand doing???
- isuisorisuaint, on 05/27/2009, -6/+10twitter is nothing but spam these days. i bet any day now they implement captchas.
- john2kx, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4They came up with the name "Google" from that guy.
- buddyfarr, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4don't spam me bro!!
- buddyfarr, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3uh no, the gest was we don't know what to do about twitter growing too fast...
- slowbox, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3I was expecting something interesting... this was like watching my 60 year old mom talk about how scary the intertubes are. Her point about theres a 'new' twitter or facebook every month and not having time to develop social rules is null. It's a typed message like any other being zapped over electronically instead of delivered by smoke signal. Just because someone trys to twitter forming an angry soccer mob doesn't mean the rules of society are some how changed. Common sense might not be so common, but trusting some advertising business like google just because they advertise themselves as "do no evil" is about the only thing that should make you wonder about dangers.
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3It really is great, because that's one way to success.
- conscioussomber, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3No no no no no... You've got it all wrong. They said something about "PRINCIPALS"
Didn't you watch the video?
Now I'm off to use Google Street view to find a good place to park my unmarked white van with an out-of-state license plate downtown. - Myztry, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3I think evil is best defined by intent - to destroy, damage, deprive, abuse, hinder, force, enforce, pressure, etc.
Trademark attributes of a certain competitor of Googles... - 99XX, on 05/27/2009, -2/+5what was the point of that? People will use twitter for bad purposes? you could use that argument for anything - I could just beat you with my keyboard.
- Farcanell, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3Loads fine for me.
- WallyAnti, on 05/27/2009, -2/+5Someone needs to clue this lady in. Life is hazardous to your health. I think she'd prefer to live in some bubble-wrapped fantasy land where all the sharp corners are rounded off.
- orlyfactor, on 05/27/2009, -3/+6Her inflections are extremely annoying. The whole rise at the end of a sentence really grinds my gears.
- Klinky, on 05/27/2009, -1/+4No NO NO that's all wrong. Stick with the old stuff and if it doesn't work pay a bunch of government lobbyists to make competing products or activities illegal, then launch a campaign of frivolous lawsuits against your customers and advertise everywhere that you feel your customers are all criminals, especially the ones who bought your product legally!!!
Better yet, how about you create overly complex products that you cannot afford to properly insure and then have everyone daisy chain them together, then on the other side of your business how about you sell large monetary products to people who cannot afford them. When the ***** hits the fan and you nearly destroy the economy, fly out in your corporate jet and ask for a bailout. Because your products are so complex, you'll be left in power and still be making millions of dollars a year even though you ***** up the system in the first place! Win-WIN!
There's always the good ol' one where you inhale a large group of corporations, repackage their products into your own. As time goes on your coherence other companies into using only your product by threatening them with higher prices if they don't drop your competitor. Then cry foul when people realize you have a monopoly & have been engaging in unfair business practices for decades.
I almost forgot the other business model where you should buy a piece of meaningless intellectual property that at one point was attached to a now wildly popular product, then try to sue everyone saying that this meaningless piece of paper means you own the product, all the while promising idiot venture capitalists that payday is right around the corner and you just need a couple more million to continue litigation and pay for your new boat. - SpruceCaboose, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3Is there something special to a flash mob that I am unaware? You could organize people in minutes using phone trees or email or FaceBook or MySpace or........
Why is Twitter that much more dangerous? - 23cranberries, on 05/27/2009, -3/+5It is. It really, really is.
- syndustry, on 05/27/2009, -1/+3The internet, in a way, represents freedom via perceived anonymity (no-*****)...freedom being the power to exercise one's will. Power, being neutral by it's very nature, can be both beneficial and detrimental....it's up to the individuals utilizing that power...You wouldn't implement controls over the ownership of a hammer simply because it could be used to kill, so why implement controls over information simply because it could be used to influence people negatively.
<!--and now, it's time for some ad hominem-->
That same free environment she wishes to control, was the fertile soil, from which sites like Google and Wikipedia sprang. Imposing controls such as she had suggested, would raise the bar for entry so high, that only the largest companies would take the time to build anything complicated...if that same control was in place at the beginning...her company would be nothing...Google, would be nothing and she'd be working for a company like Time Warner...she's essentially biting the hand that fed the hand that feeds her.
<!--this argument also applies to and can be adapted for the argument against corporate personhood-->
This is what happens when power is accumulated by individual entities (not distributed equally). An entity's Interests become entrenched and they become preoccupied with maintaining the power they have accumulated. They try and stop anything that could potentially reduce their power...that's what I think this is...their attempt to protect their interests by hobbling new companies before they're even born...raising the barrier to entry so high that they'll be protected from all but the largest competitors... - BingoPower, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2So talking complete ***** is a perogative for working for Google? I don't disagree that they have a lot of great minds there. I'm also not suggesting that the lady in question is retarded. Just re-watch that video and make sense of the crap she spouts. She needs to think first.
- ELee, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Of course she was speaking of a hypothetical use of twitter. I assume she was making a reference to the use of radio broadcasts to incite the Rwanda genocide.

There have also been uses of text messages to organize protests in the Philippines for many years. They have even used 'Matrix'-style turn-by-turn instructions to escape the authorities. But I am not aware of any use of text messages or twitter to organize violent actions.

She is just discussing the balance that companies (such as Google) that host communication tools have to find between the concerns of governments and regulating authorities, and private individuals.
- Wareznuke, on 05/27/2009, -1/+3He's doing that, "my contacts are uncomfortable" face.
- jerrycan, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Sure, there are plenty of good uses for Twitter, but taken as a whole, 99.9% of it is *****. They could easily remove all the crap by making twitterers have to pay some nominal fee ($5 one time?) to create an account? You could still follow for free. Or you could just not follow... and let this die the way all internet fads die.
I personally choose not to follow Harry Butt's daily bowel movements, but maybe his proctologist would? - theOster, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2you're right - its a complete ***** argument. using that logic we should dismantle the internet (and every other telcom system) and just sit in our homes and follow orders by whatever governing body is "in charge". you know, so no one gets hurt.
- zenmechanic, on 05/27/2009, -3/+5I'd hit it............... WHAT?!?! Someone had to say it.
- bleutuna, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2What Flash Mobs has Twitter facilitated? What terrorist attacks on the US? How many suicides are being caused daily by 'cyberbullying?'
We don't need rules and systems put into place. The web's doing FINE on its own, thanks. Just because occasionally things happen doesn't mean we should be fretting over potential evil uses. That's just insanity. - Ziggy7273, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2When he looked right at me at 2:04 I felt deeply disturbed, then at 2:06 I lol'd.
- inoow, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Many of the things don't work on chrome.....
- inoow, on 05/27/2009, -1/+3It's obvious......she's paid to say that
