- janinekahn, on 05/13/2009, -1/+20I like that it takes the inevitable shopping cart into account.
- ironhide, on 05/13/2009, -4/+19Yes, because we'd rather have them dying in the streets.
It's real easy to make comments like yours isn't it? I doubt you've been hungry for a single day. - ryanonfire, on 05/13/2009, -5/+19Don't tents already exist?
- mikek814, on 05/13/2009, -6/+16YES, SF needs more bums
- tigerpixel, on 05/13/2009, -1/+11Looks like a tent Master Chief would use when camping. Not that kind of camping...
- JFitzpatrick, on 05/13/2009, -2/+11Yeah because a god damn tent is the real deciding factor. I had this very conversation the other day...
Me: Man I think I'll give up all my material possessions, the safety and security of a home in a nice neighborhood, and a job with life insurance and benefits... if only...
Billy Mays: If only you had a kick ass tent that folded into as shopping cart! Check THIS out!
Me: Holy ***** Billy Mays, that's perfect! Homelessness here I come! - inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+9Umm no. They're typically around $100-150

http://www.pemro.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=CAR-1087 - Hetman, on 05/13/2009, -1/+10That costs 500$ to produce? That seems a little expensive. You can get a tent for less than a 100$ and carts cannot cost 400$.
- goot776, on 05/13/2009, -4/+12The problem with this idea is that now 60 out of the 73,000 homeless people will have huge targets on their backs.
If I were homeless, I wouldn't go near that thing. That's asking for a shank sandwich. Desperate people can get evil and do not see the world in the same light as these hipster inventor do-rights.
The better idea is to build more soup kitchens and well-maintained halfway houses, and help fund the religious homeless centers that are struggling under the weight.
No wait, haha, I forgot for a second that this is digg. I meant to say religious people are worthless. - ironhide, on 05/13/2009, -1/+9Why is that a problem? The homeless aren't buying these things directly. Charities are.
- disparue, on 05/13/2009, -0/+8A shopping cart is useful when you need to move your stuff around.
- elshanero, on 05/13/2009, -2/+8This is bullsh#t I want bush, pan down.
I bet the tri lambs could design a better tent. - ironhide, on 05/13/2009, -4/+10Are you a jeweler? You can recognize valuable rings from a blurry cell phone picture? Or are you just trying to justify your beliefs?
- ironhide, on 05/13/2009, -1/+7The cart is part of the shelter.
- TheNik, on 05/13/2009, -2/+8@mksmothers: I'm glad you think that being homeless is something so easily changed. Maybe you could explain it to the children with no place to sleep, no food to eat, and only old, torn clothes to wear. Maybe you should explain it to the homeless mother or the father that can't find a job because he/she doesn't have a car, can't buy a car because he/she doesn't have a job, and can't get a job because no one will hire someone that doesn't dress nicely or take baths (something that's very hard to do when you don't have a home or a shelter to go to).
You and your heathen friend disgust me. You act as if homelessness is some sort of imaginary problem, filled with only people that - for some reason - choose to be homeless or are only such because they make poor decisions. I acknowledge that some people are only homeless as a result of carelessness or drug abuse, and those are not the people that should be unrepentantly taken care of, but there are a much larger amount of legitimate cases of homelessness and poverty.
Can you explain to me what gives your friend the gall to treat someone that way? Not only is your friend not a clergyman, but HE was staying at the church (and I assume for free). A church that denies charity to others would be immediately confronted by whatever conference it's a part of. Not only this, but the only reason a church even has money is because of charity on the part of its parishioners - or should I say, by freeloading off the labor of others.
I hope one day you become homeless. Not your family, just you. We'll see how far you go without "freeloading off the labor of others." Oh, and good luck receiving those veterans benefits if that time comes. There is a consistent correlation between homelessness and having veteran status I think you should look into. - inactive, on 05/13/2009, -3/+9Congratulations mksmothers, you're friends with an *****. Sounds like a good fit.
- ironhide, on 05/13/2009, -1/+7The cart is not a shopping cart from a store. It comes with the shelter.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+6Yup but they don't elicit pity for the homeless so you could never get away with charging 500 dollars for one.
- misterparry, on 05/13/2009, -0/+6I'm broke as ***** and love to camp, can I have one?
- cubicledrone, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5"Do you really want someone with no financial interest in keeping up the appearance of their home?"
It's amazing how people change when they are afforded the right to own their home. When they own it, they will take care of it. That's human nature.
"Have you actually seen what Section 8 house looks like?"
Section 8 is a rent subsidy. Ever play Monopoly? How do you win the game? You charge increasing rent until everyone is bankrupt except you. Rent is one of the chief causes of poverty. People who rent end up poor and homeless eventually. Income gets interrupted. Even mortgages get paid off. Rent never EVER goes away and returns nothing.
"The Dallas Cowboys should have never received a free stadium recently."
Well, they did. That's how you stay rich. You get everything for free. - Nattybumpoe, on 05/13/2009, -1/+6How compassionate. Strange that you purport to being a Christian. Last time I checked, didn't Jesus hang out with the homeless? SHAME! That's a great virtue. "Judge not less ye be judged."
- cubicledrone, on 05/13/2009, -1/+6Hey, genius? Some people spend four years in college, work, save for retirement and still end up homeless. Do you read the paper much?
The only reason there are homeless people is because the rich put locks on the doors of places to live. Right now in this country there are an estimated ten million empty, rotting houses. There are millions of acres of empty land. We could offer every single homeless person in this country an acre of land and the materials to build their own home and our GDP would never even register the cost.
But the empty houses are locked and it is illegal to live in them, and the land is owned and it is illegal to live on it. It's also illegal to be homeless. Rent is the worst of all possible financial arrangements, and apartments are twice the cost of houses. Only the rich get financial advantages. That's why we have homeless people. The end. - jdog108, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Amazing! A project that actually treats homeless people with respect and not condescension.
- cubicledrone, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Given the amazing number of laws passed specifically to make the homeless miserable, it would not surprise me in the least to see the entire mechanism of the modern legal system go into urgent action and devote thousands of dollars in salaries and equipment to evict someone from a shopping cart.
Interesting to note how quickly and easily "rent" is associated with "eviction." Thanks for making my point. - seinman, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5It's 100% legal to buy your own shopping cart. People assume it's illegal because the vast majority of people who "own" shopping carts actually stole them from a store. Theft IS a crime.
- cubicledrone, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5"The people who own the homes can do what every they want with THEIR property."
The homeless don't have any property, so they can't do what they want. Thanks for making my point. As long as the rich can use their homelessness as a justification for keeping them out of a home, they don't have to work too hard at taking away their dignity.
"Do you really want a homeless person moving into the foreclosed house in your suburb?"
Well, if they move in to a foreclosed house, they wouldn't be homeless any more, right?
"People who are given stuff, aren't motivated to take care of it."
The Dallas Cowboys were given a free stadium recently. - voyetra8, on 05/13/2009, -4/+9Good troll, would bury again. A+++++++
- RumpleForeskin3, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Lambda Lambda Lambda*
- ironhide, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4I mean it's sold with the shelter. They're a unit.
- ironhide, on 05/13/2009, -2/+6Ever think they didn't actually use a real homeless person for the photoshoot? Or maybe the shelter actually provides facilities for hygene?
- cubicledrone, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4"You make it sound like property rights are a grand scheme designed to screw the little guy"
The poor are getting screwed. That's a fact. The poor have to pay full price for everything and are employed at half pay. They are also never allowed to own. That's why they stay poor.
"If you are over the age of 30 and are renting a house, you are a failure."
50 million households in this country are filled with failure. Brings a tear to me eye. - INDOAZZ, on 05/13/2009, -1/+5Lamda Lamda and the Omega Moos sex tent!
- ghatid, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3EWWDAR: Everyone who works deserves a roof (along with kids and old people)
- guinpen, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3This is cool in design and concept, but $500 is very expensive, given homeless people aren't shelling out all their change for these. Simplify the damn thing and drive the cost way down, and you help maximize the number of people you help, rather than have some novel design with your logo plastered all over it.
- joshblufs, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3130-200 according to the links you provide if you look at only full sized (homeless preferred) carts.
- MicrosoftBob, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3"...(yes, the same Peter Samuelson behind Revenge of the Nerds)..."
Ooohhhhh, THAT Peter Samuelson. I thought it was the Peter Samuelson that I've never heard of. - govtdoesnotwork, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2Along similar lines, but cheaper and without wheels, see: http://hexayurt.com/
- Exedous, on 05/13/2009, -1/+3They should also implement a built in steering wheel so you can use it as a go cart as well. Imagine hot boxing in one of these things! I, for one, would like to own one of these.
- PhillyMJS, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2Let them live in the Alpha Beta house!
- sgvprelude, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2I like how they have their website printed on the side so that homeless can easily buy it online with their iphones and netbooks.
- godofallcows, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2It's a legitimate strategy!
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -2/+4Yeah, you'd just set the homeless on fire for the lulz right?
- cmuska902, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2Please give these to the homeless so I can sit down on a bench in the train station...
- mksmothers, on 05/13/2009, -2/+4Its only a market when people buy things. This is a "feel-good charity" market. Homeless just get the opportunity to destroy it after a week.
- Kevin108, on 05/13/2009, -1/+3Will you think these tents are a good idea when some bum starts trying to camp in your yard or in the doorway to your place of business?
- RumpleForeskin3, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2What Wal-Mart are you stealing yours from?
- Sparrowhawk, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1Betcha they implement the "Buy One, Give One" laptop plan...
- phrenzy, on 05/13/2009, -1/+2This producer is a threat to our way of life.
- ghatid, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1Yea. Anyone could design a portable homeless shelter...it's just that there really isn't a market for it. It's kind of like one of those useless Japanese inventions except the difference is that SF will shell out millions of dollars for them...so I guess they do have a market.
- RantPavlov, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1Do you have any idea how many people you can feed with 500 $ ? Sally Struthers does it for a dollar a day. Which is more important food or a rolling collapsable tent?
