A bunch of white people from Survival International going over there to protect them from poachers could be the single most terrible thing that happens to the tribe if they are suddenly decimated by disease.

- deity, on 12/03/2008, -4/+2Are you sure it was in the name of greed? In that part of the world these people are probably poaching just to stay alive. It's unfortunate that two people were killed but this article is most certainly skewed to paint the poachers in the worst light.
If you read the article carefully the poachers tried to drive the natives away with a less than lethal response. Boiling water sucks but it's not the same as killing someone. The natives attacked and killed a poacher whereupon the poachers killed one of the natives.

- Barackalypse, on 12/03/2008, -4/+1This is why I find it very difficult to take other cultures seriously, the chain of events here is just so backwards when I picture it in my mind its got the Benny Hill music playing and these guys running at 4x normal speed. We start with a beating and boiling water attack, then escalate to arrows, then a man dies from a beating.

During hunting season up here from time to time we'll see disputes over a certain hunting area result in someone getting shot. The forest is are vast, but people are too bullheaded and unwilling to lose face and just walk away, or they feel they've been wronged and have to respond.

- edebolt, on 12/03/2008, -6/+1would have been interesting if they said which island and where. It sounds like it might be close to the Nicobar islands. Those islands are a hairball and most accounts of people going there I have read about all sorts of ripoffs and shenanigans.
Is this really a big deal? In Hawaii and other marijuana growing places it's not uncommon for people to disappear after stumbling onto a growers patch. It's just the case of a self preservation for an illegal activity. If someone went to an illegal grower and insisted on getting some of the crop then likely a ass kicking or killing would occur. - Barackalypse, on 12/03/2008, -6/+1So do natives shooting arrows at you for fishing.
