- MonkeyOverlord, on 05/08/2009, -4/+39500 years from now, if there is anything left of our current generation of household goods, no doubt someone will feel equally bad for picking up fragments of a smashed Starbucks coffee mug near what used to be a landfill. That's basically what this woman is feeling guilty for. The Romans probably would have laughed themselves silly at her "moral dilemma."
- Janinco, on 05/08/2009, -0/+34FTA"She mailed it anonymously, but put her return address on the package."
I'm guessing she wanted to get "caught" - frontaxle, on 05/07/2009, -2/+31British Museum? Hi this is the Parthenon.
Click - apothekari, on 05/08/2009, -0/+14Not that I necessarily disagree but, to be fair the Brits DID save those statues from probable destruction. After all the Turks were storing fricking gunpowder in the Parthenon when an errant shell blew the ***** out of the place. Christians and Muslims hated the sacred Pagan imagery and sought to DESTROY the statues.
- firesphotons, on 05/08/2009, -0/+13It almost sounds as if she equated possession of the stone and her son's death as having some sort of nexus. It's sad to think of her feeling that guilt over an incident she cannot possibly control.
- SoCalDissident, on 05/08/2009, -0/+13Has the Brady Bunch and their cursed tiki taught us nothing??
- trentrezn0r, on 05/08/2009, -0/+12"After examining the 'artifact' archeologists determined that is was not a piece of the coliseum. The rock was promptly thrown in the trash."
- sockpuppets, on 05/08/2009, -1/+13Your mom is two women?
- Goph09, on 05/08/2009, -1/+10My mom took a stone piece from the Parthenon..it's sitting on a shelf in their living room
- Petestreet, on 05/08/2009, -0/+8I have some panties from a Tijuana stripper that I've been thinking of returning.
- Scottamus, on 05/08/2009, -0/+8So now they're just going to throw it back with the rest of the rubble?
- sjones, on 05/08/2009, -0/+7You know, the son of the woman in the story died, prompting her to return it. Not that there's a curse on Roman artifacts or anything like that. Just sayin'.
- megaton, on 05/08/2009, -0/+6That's not very nice.
Really. - sockpuppets, on 05/08/2009, -0/+6RETURN TO SPARTAAAAAAA
Postage due. - masterc, on 05/08/2009, -1/+7I read that line and wondered how she made it this far in life. She pretty much told told them "Hey, here's where I live in case you want to charge me with illegally exporting an artifact. But I'm going to be smart and not put my name! You'll never find me!"
- Laminarcissus, on 05/08/2009, -0/+6Dr. Phil?
- JCougar, on 05/08/2009, -0/+6...but instead you keep them under your pillow to sniff as you fall asleep. Sick bastard!
- RyanBlueThunder, on 05/08/2009, -0/+5My Egyptian friends were always upset with the British Museum and the removal of so many ancient artifacts.
/Indiana Jones: it belongs in a museum? - JCougar, on 05/08/2009, -2/+7BURN HER!!!!
- Petestreet, on 05/08/2009, -0/+5Stop looking in my window!
- Laminarcissus, on 05/08/2009, -1/+6Well, technically she "did the right thing," which is more the subject of the article than an old rock.
- inactive, on 05/08/2009, -0/+4for those about to return a rock
we salute you - Scottamus, on 05/08/2009, -2/+6There's a special place in hell for people who steal worthless pieces of rubble. You must mail that rock back to the Parthenon anonymously with your return address or risk eternal damnation for all your family.
/s - inactive, on 05/08/2009, -0/+4Well, what if the Parthenon had moved?
- TitoBob, on 05/08/2009, -1/+4The woman probably thought it was a piece of junk and wanted to throw it away...
WIFE: Why is this piece of #@!% on my coffee table!
HUSBAND: It's not !@#$! -- it's an artifact!
WIFE: It's just a rock you stubbed your toe on and almost broke you neck on wearing those dilapidated Birkenstocks! You need to throw them away!
HUSBAND: Stop trying to control me, woman! I wore them to simulate the footwear of that era! My Birks are vintage classics!
WIFE: You're a frakking Jawa, is what you are. I should ship that thing back to Rome, is what I should do.
HUSBAND: Ugh, why don't you send them my balls, too -- because you've emasculated me. Take away my dignity too, while you're at it!
WIFE: My mother was right about you.... - beloitpiper, on 05/08/2009, -0/+3It was a good gesture to return it, but it is basically useless. Without knowing where exactly it came from, there's little archaeologists can do with it.
- hoohah625, on 05/08/2009, -0/+3Front page? Really?
- beloitpiper, on 05/08/2009, -2/+4Artifacts are man made objects. So if it was part of a ceramic vessel, then yes, it was an artifacts.
- inactive, on 05/08/2009, -0/+2MOVE DIRECTLY TO HOLLYWOOD, SIR!
- inactive, on 05/08/2009, -5/+7Christians love to feel things like guilt and fear, it gets them off!... whether they know it or not... :)
- temporarysanity, on 05/08/2009, -1/+3Dugg you, though "actively destroyed" is more appropriate than "sought to destroy". And the same went for books, which were burned, destroyed or, if made of vellum, simply erased and written over with psalms and *****.
As for the Brits: the fact that they saved what they saved does not give them right of possession in perpetuity. At least they don't charge an entrance fee... - sb66, on 05/08/2009, -0/+26 digg downs from people who haven't traveled much it seems.
No one said it was part of a ceramic vessel. It could easily just be a part of a pipe or tile. Yarla is right, that stuff is everywhere among ancient ruins..left on the ground because it doesn't count as an 'artifact'. - justDave689, on 05/08/2009, -1/+3looks like a chunk of concrete, they were probably repairing the sidewalk with jack-hammers.
- INV3Ntv, on 05/08/2009, -0/+2We do have more than our fair share of the challenged.
- inactive, on 05/08/2009, -0/+2Which turns out to be a clay sewer pipe constructed in 1949.
- Smokeydabear, on 05/08/2009, -2/+3Come to Michigan, you can have all the petoskey stones you want.
- Laminarcissus, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1I hate to make comparisons, but your Dad, Dr. ***** Sr., would have handled that better.
- fotoman607, on 05/08/2009, -1/+2you should better get her to send it back or you could die...that's what happened in the story
- theundone, on 05/08/2009, -2/+3Cool souvenir. She should have kept it.
- Super6, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1I do too much ebay shipping, the first thing I thought of when I saw the box was "I see she used a PS Form 2976"
- thegrantman, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1It was YOU who brought back the swine flu!
- inactive, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1Thanks, now that little *dododidledoo* tiki curse motif music is stuck in my head.
- sb66, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1The biggest factor on Digg is who submits it, not the news itself. Sad but true.
- shig, on 05/08/2009, -1/+2If it weren't for Christians and Muslims there wouldn't be half the antiquities that exist today.
- Petestreet, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1No, my doctor says it's just syphilis.
- inactive, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1Sybil.
- cthellis, on 05/09/2009, -1/+1...Roman?
Is it BEEG AMERICAN TEETEES??? - sergiorly, on 05/08/2009, -3/+2It's just a rock.
