- GiJoeBob, on 02/02/2008, -1/+15Exactly. I hate dumbass stories like this.
- Error601, on 02/02/2008, -5/+18Not mysterious. Moving a few tons is not that hard and he spent half his life working on it.
- ToadLeg, on 02/02/2008, -0/+10" Did Aliens Help Him Build It?
There are many theories on how Leedskalnin accomplished this amazing feat. Some say he had help from extraterrestrials, others believe he discovered the secrets behind anti-gravity and levitation.
Leedskalnin was a self-taught expert on magnetic currents, and one theory holds that he positioned the site to be perfectly aligned with Earth's poles to eliminate the forces of gravity, allowing him to move stones weighing several tons each. "
Was this a serious article? By ABC News...? What were they smoking when they wrote this article? I'd digg it because what that guy did is amazing, but this article is garbage. - imikedaman, on 02/02/2008, -0/+10I saw this on TV yesterday morning, and I absolutely could not stop laughing at how pathetic the whole segment was.
At first they were talking up the alien theory and how impossible it is to lift a few tons by yourself, then they did an interview with an engineer who pointed out that ABC knew very well that there are images of the guy using a pulley system and that the pulley makes his feat possible.
Right after the interview, they ended it by saying something like "whether it was through a pulley system, or - as some say - magic, or even alien assistance [...]" That's what a slow news day will do to you. - elusiveqc, on 02/02/2008, -1/+11Perhaps if you guys stopped and took time to appreciate things like this, you wouldn't be at war all the time..

- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -1/+7IT'S THE ALIENS. THE ALIENS.
- Evildudetx, on 02/02/2008, -1/+7Wow, ABC catches up to a nearly 20 year old episode of Ripley's: Believe it or Not.
- Error601, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6Yea, but he'd need a lot more pulleys than that to lift a couple tons on human power. How can you explain that? Aliens is the only logical conclusion.
- YojimboJango, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5I was with this story right up to the point of the aliens. Whats sad is that it would've been a perfectly good piece about a guy that dedicated 28 years of hard labor to the woman that left him.
- QuickeningYak, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5I was expecting an informative article from a "news" organization. My mistake.
- slunktoday, on 02/02/2008, -1/+6You peole are jaded.
"What? The little old man only moved 1000 tons of rock? Lame!" - borez, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4Also available for weddings , private parties and the occasional bar mitzvah.
- SeraphimJulius, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4This makes me want to get off my ass and do something for my fiancee, along the same lines
- joshearl, on 02/02/2008, -3/+7Alien assistance. Definitely aliens.
- StingerMS, on 02/02/2008, -3/+7Why would you build a monument to someone that stood you up at the alter?
- scoffey, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4That is EXACTLY what I thought when I saw that heading
- CiXeL, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4as most of south florida is...
- nebion, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4It was far more than a few tons - that was how much the biggest pieces themselves weighed - it really is quite an achievement...but doesn't need anything supernatural.
One of the most impressive parts was the gate they had to replace with traditional bearings so it would turn. - whelzorn, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3Yeah seriously. I think we hear more than enough about the war and presidential campaign every hour of every day. Don't get me wrong, it's critically important news. But I personally think people would benefit from an equal dose of thought-provoking stories in other categories. Political issues aren't the only things we should focus on.
And if you think you're helping the troops out of Iraq by watching the news, you need to rethink how important you are. - inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3Actually, I just went to that Live Science website and from there followed the link to the Forgotten Technology site where one man demonstrates how it's very EASY for a single person to move LARGE blocks of concrete. It's really cool - if you're into that kind of stuff I mean. He's got videos and stuff to demo how to use winches, pullies, fulcrums and this 'round road' thing that makes it easy for one person to 'roll' a giant, unwieldy chunk of concrete! I think HIS intention is to try to replicate how the pyramids may have been built - ingenuity, not technology. Way cool.
- charlietuna, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3That's what a russian girlfriend would say. I can hear it now; "I want Movado watch."
- LivelyIvy, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3How could ABC possibly include 'aliens' in a news story?
- charlietuna, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3You just killed my buzz man.
- zeebo, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3We need fewer distractions from the media and more reporting on the stuff that actually matters. Stopping to smell the roses is fine, but we need to get the troops back here and out of iraq first.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2Did he ever get the woman back?
- tensaibaka, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is the site from google maps:
http://maps.google.co.jp/maps?f=q&hl=ja&geocode=&q ...
(I followed the directions on their site, and used the photos from the Coral Castle homepage to find the map spot)
http://www.coralcastle.com/pictures.asp - mafiax, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2This story was lame. Coral Castle is not..
He quarried the stone built the castle then moved it piece by piece. - lolwtfhaha, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2Maybe I'm just a genius, but I would just approximate the center of gravity, drill my hole, mount the door, and then chisel off material until it was balanced...
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 02/02/2008, -2/+4all i can say is wow. i'm not talking about the monument, i mean sure that's cool and all.
i'm talking about the girl, she stands this dude up at the alter and he spends the rest of his life obsessing over her. she had to be one nice piece of ass. - Connormac44, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3Magical old people.
- CiXeL, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3haha. maybe thats a good thing. its certainly not worth flying out for. they spam the hell out of miami with ads for it. maybe if they took some tips from the winchester mystery house in san jose, ca they could make it interesting. its like they want to milk the property for all its worth without putting any money to nicely landscape it or anything.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2"Leedskalnin was a self-taught expert on magnetic currents, and one theory holds that he positioned the site to be perfectly aligned with Earth's poles to eliminate the forces of gravity, allowing him to move stones weighing several tons each."
What the ***** is the matter with you people? Undug. - lazerus9, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2The monument always existed. He simply assembled the State of Florida around it!
- Jonh, on 02/02/2008, -2/+4Crab people abc, crab people.
- Error601, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1I think that was on "In Search Of..." first.
- calon9, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1It was before myspace and online dating, when it was much harder to move on and have throwaway recovery relationships.
- arcangelgabriel, on 02/02/2008, -1/+2Dugg for actually thinking.
- nezroy, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1Uh... all that stuff you mentioned? That's technology.
- Error601, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1The real reason: Not mentally stable.
- Error601, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1It's not the accomplishment, it's the goofy reporting angle that makes it sound like no one else could have done it.
- nirvanaqween, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1If anyone is interested, you can view some pictures taken there on my flickr.

I have alot more, but they arent nearly as interesting - akatherder, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1Clearly it was the power of love. Love and pulleys.
- pe5t1lence, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1I like how the overhead "photo" is a painting. *rolls eyes* It is a pretty neat place to visit though.
- Error601, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1You only have to be able to move the biggest parts and you're all set. The rest is just time and physical labor. I think it's funny the mention his size like if he was bigger, he would have been able to lift the stuff without the same mechanisms.
- Archer007, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1I've been there. There is also something awesome that the article doesn't mention: a solid chunk of coral weighing at least a ton is so perfectly balanced that it acts as a revolving door.
- sekith, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1i feel sorry for that guy, never got over that girl
- boombye, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1I remember this from that movie Problem Child 1 or 2, or some ***** like that, they had some love monument in it.
