I'm guessing now the scrutiny and notoriety will increase for Sebastián. - Vicelord, on 11/05/2009, -5/+27It's time for Medellin 2
- OneRottenTomato, on 11/05/2009, -8/+29"I wanted to show the errors of getting involved in drug trafficking."
Last year I went into beer trafficking. It always confused me why I couldn't make a ton of money from it.
Oh, that's right. Prohibition was lifted. - ifruit, on 11/05/2009, -2/+20The first thing I thought of was Vinnie and the boys.
- IphtashuFitz, on 11/05/2009, -1/+13From the caption of one of the articles photos:
More than a decade later, Juan Pablo, 16, would be on the phone with his father long enough for the Colombian police to trace the call, track the fugitive drug lord down and kill him. When the teenager heard the news, he cried in pain, "If it's true, I'll kill all the sons of bitches." But he almost immediately repented his words. Now, he is seeking reconciliation and forgiveness from the families of his father's victims. - lex0429, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10Killing Pablo by Mark Bowen who also wrote Black Hawk Down is an excellent book, if the Escobar story fascinates you at all.
- odiroot, on 11/05/2009, -5/+14This guy looks a bit like Vince Chase.
- kamakazitp, on 11/05/2009, -0/+9maybe a little.
in a week or two, you won't remember his name, but you'd still recognize the name Pablo Escobar. - drunkCatholic, on 11/05/2009, -1/+10first thing i thought of was Half Baked
Mary Jane: My father's a drug dealer.
Thurgood: Wow, that must've been the *****.
Mary Jane: It ruined his life.
Thurgood: That must've been *****. - wampalord, on 11/05/2009, -0/+9GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!
- roddack, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8While I don't think anyone would deny that there would be repercussions from legalizing hard drugs but giving them a legal status I would expect make it much more likely for people to be able to reach treatment instead of having no where to really turn because of the illegal status.
- TheNik, on 11/05/2009, -0/+7Putting an end to drug prohibition doesn't mean there would be cocaine vending machines scattered around the streets of our metropolises - it means people that the "crimes" of consumption and possession would be lifted and people can get real help rather than go to jail.
People that do cocaine aren't criminals, it's the people that commit crimes to get more cocaine that are criminals. Go after them. - DjBearPDX, on 11/05/2009, -4/+9Can he still get good deals though? I'm, uh, asking for a friend
- GarretJax, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5"it means people that the "crimes" of consumption and possession would be lifted and people can get real help rather than go to jail."
You are assuming that someone that uses cocaine needs help. Is everyone that drinks alcohol an alcoholic in need of help? This is ridiculous. There are plenty of cocaine users that have no problem with occasional use to help have a good time.
Plus, it wouldn't be legalizing cocaine. It would be re-legalizing cocaine. Cocaine use to be in numerous commercial products and medicines. It was totally legal to possess and use cocaine.
It's the prohibition of substances that ends up creating the greater problem. Meth and Crack have arisen due to prohibition. Gang wars are mostly about control of an area for use to distribute prohibited substances. Many crimes are committed by drug users attempting to get sufficient funds to purchase the overly priced prohibited drugs. Just recently has 'cigarette' crime start to become a problem due to the excessive taxes placed on them. In my town we recently had to drive thru liquor stores get robbed during the middle of the night. All they took were the cigarettes. When was the last time you heard of someone getting robbed so somebody could get a bottle of Mad Dog? It rarely ever occurs since the price of the alcohol isn't dramatically over inflated due to prohibition. And let's not even start going into the costs of drug law enforcement or the infringement of basic individual rights due to the war on drugs.
I get a little sick of this short sighted ***** I keep reading that indicates that if we re-legalized drugs then we would be overrun by drug abusers. This is nonsense. People aren't going to think 'Boy, I would really like to try some crack. To bad it's illegal or I would. Once they make it legal I am going on a crack binge!" - ldsan, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5actually they did make one, it's called socom for the playstation
/i just farted - dimebagtwenty, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5The documentary on that book was fantastic. Very captivating. The movie will most likely be garbage, as they usually are.
The documentaries for Frank Lucas, who was the basis for the "American Gangster" movie, were much much better than that piece of ***** movie was. - Mujokan, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5Gooooaaaal !!! (In a fat-suit)
No wonder that movie tanked. - Mujokan, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Damn, I was wondering why I got buried (looking at my history page). Then I come back and see this much more impressive GOAL just above my comment. Damn you, wampalord!

You have a lot to learn. - ldsan, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5if by these you meant your mom, and by comment you meant my dick, then yes, you are correct.
- Asianwaste, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3There's a difference between between legalization/sale of product and the actual activities that goes on with large organized drug trafficking. Now I know this is a case of the chicken and the egg but no matter how the egg hatched, the chicken came out wrong.
- shnuffy, on 11/05/2009, -4/+6"Your mom my dick suck."
Right. - joaob, on 11/05/2009, -2/+4You should check out "Killing Pablo". Great book, soon to be ***** movie.
- onlines, on 11/05/2009, -2/+4Well, the legal efforts and time to change his name, "to avoid scrutiny", seem futile now.

- TSK05, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1Wasn't it like a documentary on discovery or national geographic?
- Pinkertinkle, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2So did he know their phone convo was going to lead to his father's capture or death?
- askantik, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1People can get real help or they can continue to do it but now it's legal... I don't understand how I'm getting buried when I'm not disagreeing with anyone, I am just thinking of potential problems.
- abuendia, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2Let me start saying I am Colombian.
I saw the interview a local TV network made to Escobar's son (now Marroquín) about the film and I am still trying to process if it is an apology just trying to clean Pablo Escobar image. I am close to understand why, I would do anything for my father but...
Pablo Escobar Gaviria killed lots (and lots means really a lot of innocent people) he bombed a mall at Bogota, bombed an Avianca airplane inflight, etc. He probably was the richest man in the world just to live hidding. This guy (Escobar's son) just told that sometime they hid 15 days inside a house with millions of dollars in cash starving because food finished... It's complicated and kind of surrealistic.
I really hope this guy wont make any money trying to clean his father's name. NOTHING will delete from the Colombians memory the violence we lived with when Pablo Escobar was alive. It's not his fault but everyone has to carry in his conscience what his parents did. He IS Pablo Escobar son, nothing will change that and nothing will change what Escobar did. - inactive, on 11/05/2009, -3/+2The CIA mafia was stronger.
- askantik, on 11/05/2009, -3/+2While I totally agree with your point, I don't think it's safe to say that making cocaine legal wouldn't have any repercussions...
- plainOldFool, on 11/05/2009, -3/+1And yet the mob still finds a way to make a buck. Look, I understand the argument that legalization of drugs will lower crime and I think it has some merit, but don't delude yourself to thinking that these cartels will close up shop if they lose out on narcotics revenue. They will still find a way to stay in the business of violence.
- BoshJohn, on 11/05/2009, -5/+2If not for the appetite for drugs by all nationals, people like him would not have prospered and led astray. Time to legalize all the bad habits. When our govt start chosing what bad habit to condone, then be very afraid. Alcohol will kill you eventually, cocaine will kill you, crack will kill you, cigarretes will kill you, heroin will kill you and the list goes on .......
Just my 2cents! That is why I write about issues that would help humanity on my website.
http://houseplantsreviews.com - askantik, on 11/05/2009, -5/+2True... but then it could also be argued that there might then be too many addicts and not enough treatment facilities. And while opening new treatment facilities might actually be "good for the economy," I don't think it's a noble goal to shoot for :P
- ifruit, on 11/05/2009, -9/+4Thank him for his service.
