- nullcodes, on 06/08/2009, -1/+42I have been to Bangladesh .. I never saw anything like this happen .. it's probably in some rural village and other stuff going on behind the scenes. They do have their whackos, but I think this is a one off.
And yeah I did interact with people.
Btw, the Taliban is getting their ass kicked in Pakistan because they did something similar where they beat some poor girls senseless and the video was everywhere and it sparked major anti Taliban offensive. After a while people get fed up with their *****.
Read about the video that sparked the outrage, article dated prior to the offensive: http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0405/p90s01-wosc.htm ...
After the offensive it sponsored:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/05/world/asia/05ref ...
"A woman was lashed in public, and a video of her writhing in pain and begging for mercy stirred wide outrage. Taliban bosses ordered people to donate money. Cosmetics shops and girls’ schools were burned.
By the time the military entered Swat last month, local people began leading soldiers to tunnels with weapons and Taliban hiding places in hotels, the military said. “These people, six months back, weren’t willing to share anything,” said a military official who was involved in planning the campaign. “Gradually they’ve been coming out more and more into the open.”
Locals see their true colors when they pull stunts like this. Good. - MonkeyNews, on 06/08/2009, -1/+24I'd like to see the specific passage that instructs "25 sticks, 4 times to the back".
In this situation, Sharia is just the pretext for backward village idiots to control the others. - DrivebyGroper, on 06/08/2009, -6/+26Ignorance, religion of stupid people.
- nostraboris, on 06/08/2009, -6/+23does anyone on digg actually read the articles before posting?
The title should have been: "Unlawful caning of woman causes national outrage in Bangladesh"
Article: "Doctor executed for performing abortions"

- Kyrgizion, on 06/08/2009, -5/+17Religion, stupid people's ignorance.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+12I was born there and I seen it before my eyes how women get treated by the male population in rural areas. I grew up there until the age of 9. And I have seen things that still to this day pisses me off. In fact then I didn't know what it was about, so I often question my parent what it was all about.
--so they tell me that they coudln't or allowed to attend school, since cooking for the males were more important, or getting water in a bucket from miles away early in the morning when they were like 6 years old.
--mandatory beating for all minor things, directly mostly toward women. both physical and mental abuse.
--i see now that mental abuse was worst than physical.
--village court was common for any woman who has done something, i have seen a woman with 2 kids, 1 infant, the mother followed, but before she was beaten by the villagers and kicked out of the village, degrading, inhumane( i was part of it too, I didn't know what was going on and i have vivid clear of the dirt road and how it winded left toward the other village, the low rice fields to the left, ponds..ok never mind.), and I now wonder what happened to her. What made others have the justification to kick her out of her own home and she was forced to leave to her parents by the village. Thats just one story.
Anyhow, I asked my only parent left, why people behaved that way. My father was a school principal and he was always out to the town so he never saw any of these but just heard later; so I asked my mother about some of these and this is what she replied, "WE DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER." The other funny thing is, she said, "you were so young but you remember all these." I guess it was mentally ***** up to a child. Go figure! - alexacastrato, on 06/08/2009, -0/+12***** retard, feminists don't get up in arms over this, ALL people should. There's nothing that "serves her right" it's that in that part of the world, there's still practices that are ***** disgusting that are still commonplace, oppressing women and forcing them into submission and hiding.
Women are ALL the hell up in arms over this. Just because it's the first time you've ever heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't happen all the time, EVERYWHERE. How about female genital mutilation in Africa?! Women having acid thrown on their faces for trying to attend school in Afghanistan!? Read please, arm yourself with knowledge. For some reason feminism is synonymous with being a total balls-out bitch who hates on men, it's quite the opposite. We love men! I love my fiancee dearly. I just wish women all around the world were free to do the things I do as well. You know, things like be able to wear appropriate clothes in sweltering temperatures, as opposed to a full black body smock. Or showing my face in public. Or speaking to strangers. Or walking side-by-side with companions. Or attending classes. Holding a job. The list goes on. - DrivebyGroper, on 06/08/2009, -5/+16HAHA, oh man you are so clever. The last time I heard that line regurgitated by a simple mind was the comment two lines above yours.
- Gareth321, on 06/08/2009, -2/+12The punishment was carried out in direct parallelism to, and in accordance with, Islamic law [Sharia]. How naive of you to call it tangential. No one likes a smart ass, especially one that only thinks they're a smart ass.
- jitterbits, on 06/08/2009, -0/+10What do you mean feminists don't get up in arms about these things? Of course they do. I've heard about these issues far longer from feminist and human rights orgs. than mainstream. It was only when being a muslim became rather unpopular that we started hearing more of these incidents on a broader scale.
- david286, on 06/08/2009, -2/+10So that makes it ok to cane her?
- hakz, on 06/08/2009, -1/+7I'm Bengali, hell I've been living there for the past 6 months, Bangladesh isn't governed under sharia law. If it is, hell I've never heard of it because it's never enforced.
Edit: Oh this is a village making their own laws. This doesn't happen often. Women in Dhaka (the city) and other cities within Bangladesh are free, and are even free to wear "western" clothes, which many do. - sandhyap, on 06/08/2009, -1/+6Really a shameful Act...but you almost 99% muslims do have the same mentality....I don't know why these women tolerate these nonsense acts.

- Granfalloon, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4***** Sharia "law." Time for these people to start acting like adults (human adults). Is this the only way they're able to keep their women from "running around" and talking to other men? By threatening them with violence?
Sharia law is a joke and everybody knows it. There - I just made up my own law. It's called "Granfalloon's Law." It states that everyone in the world is required to send me one dollar. If you do not follow this law, you will be given "the Holy Purple Nurple" until dead. Granfalloon has spoken! - Helois, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4Can u not get over ***** rick roll yet? I didn't mind it until idiots like u started doing the old dancing window java script tricks and message boxes when u try to leave the page.

"I guess I have to wonder if Islam and Muslim fundamentalists two different things?"
Yes. - lead2thehead, on 06/08/2009, -2/+5Why is this getting buried? This woman was caned under Islamic law (Sharia law)... these are the laws that Muslims in Bangladesh have created because they think that's what Allah wants them to do. They felt that they had a religious obligation to beat this woman. Yet people constantly refer to Islam is a religion of peace. This points out the flaw in that statement, and judging by the number of people who do not understand just how violent it is, it SHOULD be in every thread.
- nirvanix, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3America needs to 'liberate' them by bombing the ***** out of them. After a million or so of them are dead they will gladly accept our way of life. It worked in Iraq didn't it?
^ sarcasm - uzair21, on 06/08/2009, -4/+7I have solid sources to back me up. And i didn't tell ANY man, I said 'ANY' unidentified man. Perhaps you should RTFP
- banderwocky, on 06/08/2009, -1/+4Religion is full of the crazies. Get rid of religion and solve 95% of the worlds problems.
- lead2thehead, on 06/08/2009, -1/+4Trolling, religion of the lonely.
- nismerf, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3I am just wondering, all the news I ever see and hear is how Muslim extremists or fundamentalists do this or that. And then others say "Islam, how peaceful" or some such. I guess I have to wonder if Islam and Muslim fundamentalists two different things? Is there any positive news about them? If the religion is so peaceful why do you only hear about hatred and injustice? Are muslims digging down any anti muslim comment or liberals or the "open minded"? I am not judging, I am just wondering and asking.
A woman is beaten with a cane for talking to a man of another religion. Never mind religion of the woman. They are beaten for talking to someone others think you should not talk to. Beaten. I don't even hit my dog when it sniffs other people wagging it's tail. And I OWN my dog. It seems they are just using the religion as an excuse to do this, and everyone is eating up only the religious aspect, not that fact that this poor woman was BEATEN. - cyssero, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Wow, they can *even* wear whatever clothes they feel like wearing? That's progress, man.
- ikeeel4money, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Buried and reported.
- DrivebyGroper, on 06/08/2009, -15/+18I don't get why someone has to post this same ***** dumbass comment in every thread that references Islam. It's not original or funny; it's totally tangential to the root cause in this situation, and shows that you are limited to a simplistic (even childish) understanding of the world.
- ikeeel4money, on 06/08/2009, -3/+6Hey, your the one who claimed something so your the one who supposed to man up and prove it. I don't like sharing my contacts with anyone on the internet, because I value my anonymity. I don't mean to be an ***** but I've had enough of people distorting the image of Islam without anything to back up their claims. Either that or they usually come up with out of context sources.
- hakz, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3I'm saying it because people's view of muslim populated countries are of, well you know.
- diemunkiesdie, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2Something I posted above but applies here too:
These courts "are not recognised as legitimate courts of law". Actually, Islamic law has a process that is supposed to be followed before caning, something about ignore the person for their first offense for three days and something else for the second offense and so forth. And women CAN talk to men (and vice versa) Islamically, it is just supposed to be minimized so there is no premarital sex and so forth. In that region over there (and note I said region, not religion because the Hindu folks in India do this too) the marriages are arranged so you don't get premarital sex issues cropping up very much. And, just to head off any misconceptions, arranged marriages are not Islamically allowed to be forced on a woman. She is required to agree of her own free will to be married. It's just that some retards over there don't follow the rules.
It's culture, not religion. You don't hear this happening in Indonesia do you? Why do I mention some random country like Indonesia? Because it is the largest Muslim country in the world. These issues also don't show up in Uzbekistan or in Mauritania (also Muslim nations). Those are just examples of countries that I could think of off the top of my head, but I guarantee there are more countries. I think that should prove to you these are cultural issues, not religious. - david286, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2FTA - "The village elders found Kamala Begum, 38, a mother of four, guilty under Islamic sharia law"
Bangladesh law isn't the problem it's the Islamic sharia law that outlines these actions as being acceptable. There are countries out there that follow Islamic sharia law and wouldn't have gone after the men for this beating. - inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2hell yeah! let's invade and then cane them until they do what we tell them to do!
- marmotjmarmot, on 06/08/2009, -2/+4"In the last few months, we've seen villagers invoking sharia to mete out barbaric punishments to women," said lawyer Ali.
"It's disturbing sign and a real concern. It shows some parts of the country are becoming more conservative."
well, there's your problem.
Look, until people realise that there is no invisible Sky Wizard to watch over them this is going to keep going on. I just don't understand it; why do people think that something that can control everything in the universe cares about how long your hair is, if you eat the meat cooked in milk, wear a shirt made with 2 different fibers(sorry no wool and linen together), face a certain direction and bawl at him 5 times a day or whatever ***** crazy rule you think makes your brand of religion the One. Didn't mean to just pick out the Torah, or Koran for rules, all religion is equally nuts to me. - lemur, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2"According to Sharia, a Muslim woman is not allowed to talk to 'ANY' unidentified man."
That is completely false. - DrHoliday, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2Why would anyone report people being decent?
Would you even click on a Digg headline that writes "Muslim man gives up a kidney for a Christian child?"
Whatever it's about, nobody likes good news. - mahadiga, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1Prevention is better.
Hence, TRUE Musl!ms must remove unsolicited Jew!sh and Chr!st!an references from Quran.
http://www.alketab.com/ - nullcodes, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1prleet, but .. there is no place in Bangladesh that is miles from water .. it's in a Delta that's almost perpetually in a flood state.
- milkmage, on 06/08/2009, -1/+2the "Muslim race"?
you're too stupid to be sarcastic. - LikaLaruku, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1I say the UN sends soldiers from all over the world to Islam, steal & export all of their women, & change the name of their country to Radical Sausagefestburg.
- libhatefulhead, on 06/08/2009, -2/+3But in the US Christians kill doctors!
- Paranor01, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1I was referring to the "right-wing" Christians who kill/maim people because they don't think like they do (ie: Westborough Baptist, etc). Read the Christian Bible, the "old ways" of punishment are being practiced still by the extremist faction of Christianity, just as the other religious extremists.
But digg me down since you people don't seem to have a clue to what is in your precious right! Bible. - simplyintricate, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1You're trying to force your opinion on other countries? What if I invaded you and said that all this skin girls are showing are an abomination and that I should "force you to act like human adults?"
- david286, on 06/08/2009, -2/+3Because it goes against the liberal propaganda that Islam is a peaceful religion when it is far from it. It's kind of a hard sell when articles like this come up.
