- dreicher, on 06/05/2008, -4/+136Ed McMahon isn't caught up in the "mortgage meltdown" - he's caught in the "Holy *****! I made a lot of stupid decisions meltdown." This guy has been actively working in show business for more than 50 years, made HUNDREDS of millions of dollars, won a $7.2M B.S. lawsuit for mold a couple of years ago and still has a mortgage at 85 years old.
This has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the mortgage meltdown - its just a tale of some show biz moron who pissed away 50 lifetimes worth of earnings and, at 85 years old, is asking for my pity.
I'll pass. - inactive, on 06/05/2008, -2/+39Looks like he needs to buy some magazines and enter a sweepstakes! :-)
- RuffRidr, on 06/05/2008, -3/+38It's really hard for me to get worked up about someone losing their mansion.
- cygnus2112, on 06/05/2008, -0/+29"McMahon won a $7.2-million insurance settlement after claiming that mold in his house killed his dog Muffin and sickened him and his wife."
Couldn't he have paid off all his debts then? - louiebaur, on 06/05/2008, -2/+29Man that is a trip you would think that Ed would have socked his money away in good investments
- Carl306, on 06/05/2008, -1/+22How could he not afford to pay down a mortgage in the low millions given his earnings over the course of his lifetime? Someone clearly wasn't a very frugal and responsible spender. I could give a damn if some celebrity like this ends up on the street because he had no self control.
- Comus, on 06/05/2008, -2/+19Agreed. I have 0 remorse when it comes to these pity stories about people who are or were formerly ridiculously rich who are now "struggling" in the mortgage crisis.
- vango, on 06/05/2008, -1/+15why did he buy such an expensive house in his 80s?
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -0/+13One thing i still cannot wrap my head around is; why is it that lower to middle income people usually have their finantial stuff under controll, but its the millionaires who end up being in huge debt, and go bankrupt as a result of bad spending habbits. Look at Lindsay Lohan, she was worth millions, bought two mansions, and partied hard, now shes broke (last i heard), i understand that when you are making large amounts of money it stops being a major concern, but it should still be something one keeps in mind shouldnt it??
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -2/+14Who gives a *****?
- Yazilliclick, on 06/05/2008, -0/+12You mean it shows anybody could be a ***** idiot and piss away their money on useless ***** they don't need regardless of how much they make.
- nahsrocketeer75, on 06/05/2008, -0/+11FTA: "The ideal situation would be that he would be healthy and able to earn a living to pay for his house," Bragman said. ... He's 85 years old, for crying out loud; that hardly seems like the "ideal situation," never mind a very likely one.
- 3Den, on 06/06/2008, -0/+9It's because the "Rich" who fall down are more newsworthy than middle class folk who do the same thing.
Also... people are people. If you took joe average who complains about not making ends meet, and doubled his salary.. he'd quickly start complaining again that he was having trouble making ends meet. He'd go get another car, a nicer car, a bigger house, put his kids in more expensive schools.. until he was stretched to the limit again. That's how people tend to function.
Plenty of people who think they are in difficult times could be living very comfortably if they just managed things differently. - Seventus, on 06/05/2008, -1/+10It makes you wonder if he's going to start asking for a public handout to save his house like Dustin Diamond did a few years ago.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+10HEYOOOOOOOOOO
- bxblox, on 06/06/2008, -0/+8Rich celebrities are rich for life. If Michael Jackson is millions in debt and I have a net worth of 5 bucks, he will still be living in a mansion and I'll be in a regular joe apartment...
- sonoran, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8Congratulations! You may Already Be!..... in default!
- chuckDontSurf, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8""The ideal situation would be that he would be healthy and able to earn a living to pay for his house," Bragman said."
So Ed McMahon is living paycheck-to-paycheck? wtf? - millsworks, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8My first thought was: "WTF? He's still alive?!?"
- wilhoitm, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8Didn't he marry a 20 year old wife like 10 years ago? That is probably why he bought the big mansion and also has no money!
- estacado, on 06/05/2008, -1/+8Can't he just borrow money from Vince McMahon.
- mizatt, on 06/05/2008, -0/+7That's Vince McMahon...
- m0tbaillie, on 06/05/2008, -0/+7Can't pay for his multi-MILLION dollar mansion!? SAY IT AIN'T SO!
Oh noes, ya might have to downgrade to that three-car garage there, Ed. - lebruf, on 06/06/2008, -0/+7How do you go that long in show biz, give away that many $1,000,000.00 checks, have a household name, and be that old, and still be carrying a mortgage?
I feel for the guy, he probably didn't foresee a broken neck, let alone a broken hip, but c'mon... Ed's the new poster child for American fiscal irresponsibility
"Yes! You are correct sir!" - SkippyDoorknob, on 06/05/2008, -1/+8Heeeeeeeeeeere's squandering!
- Dopeness, on 06/05/2008, -2/+8Jesus Christ, Ed McMahon looks like he's 45,000 years old in that photo!
- Cfahooligan, on 06/05/2008, -1/+7He has been trying to sell his home but because of that trash whore B-Nasty, no one wants to buy his home. That's BS.
- diggdon, on 06/05/2008, -0/+6Maybe Ed took out a reverse mortgage, never thinking he would live that long.
- gracias, on 06/06/2008, -1/+7This is a little off topic, but what stops really old people from maxing out credit cards and going into debt before they die? Just always wondered that.
- fluffyturtle, on 06/06/2008, -2/+8Talk about ridiculous, I doubt regular Joe get's a 7.2M settlement from a mold issue.
The rich get richer. - inactive, on 06/05/2008, -2/+8IF i could digg you up a thousand times, I would, when I read this thats EXACTLY what I was thinking, leave it up to the media to blame this on the supposed recession, did you know that 96% of home owners are making the mortgage on their homes? so where exactly is this housing crunch, 4% of the people in the US cant pay the bills on their house and there is a crisis?!?!?!?!
- mlarsen, on 06/06/2008, -0/+6Wait, Ed has worked on the Tonight Show for over 30 years, and he never saved any of the $$? This is Dave Ramsey's nightmare. Hey Ed, Live within your means. You have earned more that %90 of the world will ever make, and now because you made several bad financial decisions you are now paying the price. This is your own fault, and I do not feel one bit of sympathy for you. Welcome to reality - I know it is something new, but you are from Hollywood.
My $.02 - fac3less, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5Citation please?
- Szandor, on 06/06/2008, -1/+6I'd give Dustin money to swallow a bottle of sleeping pills.
- lazyfisherman, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5Where did all his money go? This guy is a TV legend and he's out of funds ???
- mockupscaledown, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5He's just on a really elaborate episode of TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes.
- mizatt, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5Because being around other rich people with nice cars, big houses, etc. makes them feel like they have to live a high-consumption lifestyle to compete. They think stuff like this is normal. People will go on all day about what cars they drive but are generally pretty hush-hush about their investments and financial strategies, at least in comparison.
If you want to read a good book that details a lot of this stuff with a study, check out "The Millionaire Next Door" - Aensland, on 06/06/2008, -1/+6When he's earned as much money as we know he has, there's no ***** reason to be in financial trouble unless he was totally unprepared.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/05/2008, -1/+5When 45,000 years old you are, look as good, you will not, hmm!
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -1/+5Maybe Ed should have played his own SWEEP TAKES Game or wrote a Publisher Clearing House cheque out to himself !!
I mean jesus it reads "The six-bedroom, five-bath home on Crest Court is listed for sale at $6.25 million, said real estate agent Alex Davis of Alex Davis Estates, who has the listing. It's been on the market for two years, he said."
He could have payed it off himself !! ***** selling !!! What did he do with the 7. 2 million he won in court ?
"McMahon was about $644,000 in arrears on the loan when the notice of default was filed, the paper said."
So pay it and shut the ***** UP !! - tightscrummy, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4Nothing. I know someone who did exactly that the year before she died of cancer. At that point she had nothing to her name anyway because of medical bills and being too sick from chemo to work for a couple years.
- nonNewtonian, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4The listing, with pics:
http://www.hiltonhyland.com/address.php?property_I ... - geoken, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4Yeah, but then he wouldn't have been able to take that 3 month vacation in Fiji or buy a new Rolls.
- thund3rstruck, on 06/06/2008, -4/+8"did you know that 96% of home owners are making the mortgage on their homes?"
So then the NBC Nightly News lied tonight when they reported that "of every mortgage in America, 1 in 10 are either in foreclosure or behind in payments"?
Please stop making ***** up because it doesn't make you look intelligent. - Lst01, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3I doubt Ed made "hundreds of millions" but I'm sure he did ok all those years.
- ahff, on 06/05/2008, -1/+4and i should care because.....
- iLemon, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3You are talking about actors and actresses. They didn't earn all that money because they were the brightest people in their class.
- inactive, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3heyoooooo-oh *****.
- MrCocktoasten, on 06/05/2008, -1/+4What a complete *****-up.
- bjmoose, on 06/06/2008, -1/+4Damn shame. Yea, he may have made a few bad financial decisions along the way, but have some respect for the guy. Many of the comments I've seen are completely unwarranted. If you can't say anything nice about this guy then zip it.
