Man with one leg accused of stealing cars
abclocal.go.com — Police agree it seems like a very difficult crime for anyone to commit, stealing rental cars right off the lot at the airport, with security all around. But, police say, somehow a Philadelphia man without a right leg, stole five rental cars in less than a month. The suspect is 44 year old Benjamin Copeland. He is accused of stealing five cars...

- withears, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2How did he find time for auto theft? I mean, he's been so busy in that ass-kicking contest and all.
- opmike, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2Operating the rudder controls with one leg is a perilous proposition.
- haykuro, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2Well let's not get carried away... He'd clearly have to hop up to airplane theft.

- AlwaysAwake, on 06/08/2008, -5/+30Give him an "A" for Ambition, and an "F" for Followthrough. Most crimes go unpunished. He got caught. He needs to go to the Geo. W. Bush School majoring in How To Commit Crimes In Public And Never Go To Jail
- Pake, on 06/09/2008, -1/+3I heard the Kennedy & Bush School of Crime offer better degree options.
- richardhenry, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2The guy obviously wants to get into prison, which must be better than living on the outside if you can't "afford the gas" for the SUVs you stole.
- Briii, on 06/08/2008, -2/+36It wasn't me it was the one armed man
- itsgotyou, on 06/08/2008, -0/+4Yeah I bet he also had one peg leg an eye patch and parrot. Open cell #4.

- bigNtasty, on 06/08/2008, -0/+18I guessing the cars weren't standard
- Iamironman, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I was hoping he'd get caught in first driving a stick...
- swordedge, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I was thinking that I'd like to see him try to drive my car, it's a stick so you need two feet to make it go. (six banger 97 mustang, never thought I'd put 50 bucks in the tank all at once)
- zspade, on 06/08/2008, -0/+10Well how the hell else is he supposed to get around?
- Dan11023, on 06/08/2008, -7/+4is it just me... or does the anchorman look like a rapist we have been searching for?

- aratika, on 06/08/2008, -1/+19His lawyer won't have a leg to stand on....
- itsgotyou, on 06/09/2008, -0/+10Not if he's smart. The law shouldn't be a crutch to good lawyers.
- passedoutghost, on 06/09/2008, -5/+0Cause the guy's crippled get it? :D
- PopcornDave, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4Yes, but he seemed to have a leg up on the security at the yard...
- theblt, on 06/09/2008, -2/+1But he couldn't get away from the cops because of his missing leg.
Oh wait...
- kailash079, on 06/08/2008, -0/+4thats some one-sided news..
- itsthemechanic, on 06/08/2008, -1/+16Here in Europe that would never happen. Most of the cars are stick-shift. Try driving that with one leg, cripple.
- Milo45, on 06/08/2008, -11/+1Stick shifts are controlled by hand, not by leg, correct?
- 471776, on 06/08/2008, -0/+11Gotta use the clutch, which is a pedal. You press the pedal, then you can use the stick.
- Avaseal, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Unless you're driving around in a 89 escort GT that burns 1 quart of oil a week and you JDG(a)F, then you don't need the clutch for anything other than 1st gear.. i mean dont get me wrong, i love the car and all but it just wont die
- passedoutghost, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Not correct. It's called the clutch.
- 471776, on 06/08/2008, -0/+11Gotta use the clutch, which is a pedal. You press the pedal, then you can use the stick.
- Milo45, on 06/08/2008, -11/+1Stick shifts are controlled by hand, not by leg, correct?
- j1ggy, on 06/08/2008, -1/+2I bet I could steal a car about as fast as a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest.
- DaviDTC, on 06/08/2008, -6/+5How does having one leg make getting into a car and driving hard? It shouldn't matter at all which leg is missing. I have at times used my left leg on the gas when I need to relax my right for a couple mins, even in my car that is a stick where you need 2 feet at times. This story is retarded. What is next? How did the guy with a missing right eye see into the passenger mirror?
- Milo45, on 06/08/2008, -0/+7Just because your handicapped doesn't mean it should stop you from doing things like.. stealing cars from Avis.
- miketh01, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2*Insert joke about the movie, "The Fugitive" here*
- alilhappything, on 06/08/2008, -0/+5This makes me laugh because I am currently in crutches for a broken right foot. I drive left footed like this man! Its easier than you think.
- Brennn10, on 06/08/2008, -5/+1wtf?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
- jasonliman, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1The police department should just hire him - to replace all the dumb ***** that run the office. Obviously he is one sneaky genius.
- willster580, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Or he went to the airport to steal cars that he only used once.
- tikited, on 06/08/2008, -0/+2A Pirate with a wooden leg, rrr.
- BobTheTaco, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1Wait, why do people think it's so hard to drive a car with your left leg? Just shift yourselves over people!
- aenegeling, on 06/09/2008, -2/+3don' t tase tha left leg bro
- JustusUnlimited, on 06/08/2008, -0/+5Just call it discrimination and he'll be fine
- yepme02, on 06/09/2008, -0/+16Please don't be black...please don't be black....click!...dang it...(sorry everyone) This actually goes through our heads sometimes when brothers see a news tease.
- orirawlings, on 06/09/2008, -2/+1That's not impressive. How many of you have had a car stolen by someone with LESS than one leg... huh?
- scarz99, on 06/09/2008, -7/+1facepalm.jpg
- Haoie, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4Well, I guess it's good to see some people don't let disabilities get the best of them.
So much for climbing Mt Everest, though. - Diggerr, on 06/09/2008, -0/+14"Man with one leg accused of stealing cars"
What's his other leg accused of?- zspade, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4Ah syntax.
- Zephik, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2Being an accessory to the crime.
- wibambau, on 06/09/2008, -0/+8I love how running out of gas was his criteria for stealing another one. Each vehicle was left at the point in which it ran out of gas.
- Ocelot13, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4well, i dont see anything wrong if he is proven guilty.
just because hes missing a leg doesnt mean he should get off with nothing being done to him. treat him like everyone else.
if a man with no brain can be president, a man with 1 leg can steal cars. - jnadke, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1It's not impressive unless the car he stole was a stick shift....
Seriously, if your right leg is missing, then that eliminates the problem of moving your left leg over to step on the accelerator. These people make it sound like it's rocket science. - JoeHague, on 06/09/2008, -0/+0This story totally captures the essence of Philadelphia.
- Shaman760, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2Wow, someone exploiting a personal handicap for personal gain? I'm quite surprised.
Politicians have been using this strategy for years, unbeknownst. - seastobble, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2Unimpressive, I only use one leg/foot to drive. I would honestly be more impressed with a one legged man stealing bicycles...or skateboards.
- pajeff2, on 06/09/2008, -0/+5Whats the big deal here, this guy is nothing new:
updated 4:50 p.m. ET, Wed., Aug. 29, 2007
ABBOTSFORD, Wis. - Police in Wisconsin have cited a legless man and his friend on a drunken driving charge, saying the amputee was at the wheel while his friend worked the pedals.
It was the third and second such arrests for the men, respectively.
Police say the amputee was sitting in the driver's seat and told officers he had too much to drink. But he argued he wasn't really driving since the other man was on the brake and accelerator. - Haz3rd, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Philadelphia: Raising the bar one crime at a time.
- adamcrigger, on 06/09/2008, -0/+8Inspiring.
- jidawil, on 06/09/2008, -1/+0Wow.
- InSectWar, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2I guess he would only steal automatics then
- detroitcity, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Another reason why I drive a stick shift.
- Backstab, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I don't get it, how does 1 leg and driving cars related? I only use one foot to drive my car..
- Carl306, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I'm trying to imagine him accidentally breaking into a manual car and trying to work the clutch...
- Gr1nch, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2I think I sat next to this guy at a Benihana in Maryland a few years ago. Only reason I remember is because my father made an absent minded comment about his crutches, only to have him stand up and have no right leg. Guy was like 6'3/6'4.
- EricBoyers, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Bicycle theft wasn't working out.
- Vodd9, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Actually, it could have if it would have been bikes with clipping pedals.
- Zuljin, on 06/09/2008, -1/+1It's not impossible, and people shouldn't be excused or not investigated if they are crippled. It would be stupid AND an insult to do so.
- xsidekick409, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Another reason to drive manual.
- Vodd9, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Exactly. Because the odds of a one-legged man stealing your car are dangerously high.
- xsidekick409, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1They're not, but nevertheless, there is that fear.
- dhughes, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1 Even better is a car with a manual trans. and without any seats, that's tough.
- Vodd9, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Exactly. Because the odds of a one-legged man stealing your car are dangerously high.
- user9, on 06/09/2008, -1/+0I hope Rock Star games puts a one legged ass kicker and car thief in the next GTA game :)
