When I was there in 1983, an Indian chap was being threatened in front of his girlfriend on Trafalgar Square by two thugs wearing rugby shirts calling him a n**ger. They were in his face threatening to kill him because "his kind" were invading England. People were just walking on by. I actually had to step in between the thugs and this guy, allowing him time to walk away, at which point I was called a n**ger lover. I was in the Marines at the time, so I think that gave them second thoughts about attacking me, but my friend who was with me -- thankfully not with me at the time -- was black and from a very tough area of Detroit. Later, in a pub, another guy started calling my buddy Sammy Davis Jr. It was all I could do to keep my friend from ending that idiot's life.
In all fairness, an older gentleman (WWII era) stepped up and told the idiot that he would end him if he didn't shut up, at which point the taunting stopped. The older man then thanked us for being American servicemen and spoke about his fondness for Americans and all they've done for England.
