The incident has heavy religious overtones, but the media won't identify Christianity as the man's faith because they see that the man's behavior is obviously anti-Christian in nature, so they won't recognize him as being "one of us" in their own faith. If the man were Muslim, on the other hand, the article would make sure that he is clearly identified as such, because a Western audience would assume that the mans behavior is all due to the fact that he's Muslim, without recognizing that such behavior would be entirely against the principles of Islam as well as Christianity.
