Fortunatly i was standing by the basement door with my gun safe 3' away at the time. He at least had the werewithall to realize a 50acp beats a roofing axe, and backed off. Cops didn't do a thing, except harass me about drawing on the guy who was intent on killing my wife and unborn child. Told us he was known psychotic but he seemed to be calmed down so they were letting him go.
1 year later, same nutjob, blows a gasket, drags his 90yo dad out of the car, throws him on the ground drives off and returns with a shotgun. starts going door to door pounding and threatening to kill someone. (except mine.. he must have remembered his last encounter). Swat shows up. 3 hour stand off. He gives up and they haul him off. He is back 3 fricking days later. I asked the cops why he was out. they told me, "well he is back on his meds now, so its all good."
Next time a guarantee its going to turn out a little "different" for him, Im done calling the cops. If your crazy you get away with all kinds of crap.

Ive installed video cameras (his suggestion) so there will be no ambuguity as far as the actions that led me to believe my life or the life on someone else was in immediate peril.

But im also a realist, and will not allow my family to be killed or maimed by some nutjob that the police refuse to do anything about. Back to the article, these men did the right thing, they potentially put their lives and freedom at risk to protect another. To me, it seems that being sent to a sanitarium should invalidate any hate-crime charge. If he committed a hate crime, then he had a motive to punch her and is in charge of his (limited) mental faculties. But if his punch lacked a motive, then it wasn't based on hate, and the attack was random (thus, the sanitarium). - anotherjack, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5Stuff like this makes me proud of my country.
