- alapoet, on 09/07/2008, -3/+28So, then, folks who like Dream Theater or Rush (who combine heavy metal riffs with classical song structures) must be REALLY gentle and VERY creative. :-)
- lucy22, on 09/07/2008, -0/+20No personality??? ( smart a-- response) ha ha.
- pingpants, on 09/07/2008, -2/+20"... indie music lovers lack both self-esteem and the work ethic."
twee pop, ftw. - life38, on 09/07/2008, -0/+18I heard this on national public radio and found it interesting that the level of belief on its accuracy was so high. I think I will wait for more proof. However, music is one of the secret releases for individuals.
- sockpuppets, on 09/07/2008, -0/+18The spongebob theme enters my head all the time. What's that say about me?
- warrenterr, on 09/07/2008, -1/+18What about techno and electronica?
- drumrave, on 09/07/2008, -3/+19It means you like dancing and date rape
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+10If indie lovers are both low in self esteem and work ethic, what does that make emo lovers?
- selrahc, on 09/07/2008, -0/+10Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
- Paranormalized, on 09/07/2008, -0/+9Hey, I listen to indie rock, and I resent... wait, no, you're right, I'm a loser. Great, now I'm sad... ***** it, I might as well call out of work and spend the day in bed crying and drinking cheap wine. Sigh.
- chaos7, on 09/07/2008, -2/+10metal is the best
- warrenterr, on 09/07/2008, -0/+8that's what you like people to think, but you're actually quite shy on the inside.
- Karmavs, on 09/07/2008, -1/+9stupid.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+7bahaha, so true.
- jbrevik, on 09/07/2008, -0/+7Sounds to me like some indie music lover got some heavy metal fan in trouble at work ;|
- makemoneynotart, on 09/07/2008, -0/+7I have playlists that include NWA followed by Leonard Cohen then having Ryan Adams or Vicente Fernandez end it. I am obviously a very confused person. True but still a pretty unscientific article, pass.
- Zypher77, on 09/07/2008, -1/+7I saw Dream Theater live on the Prognation tour.
DT is awesome.
dugg up for DT - drumrave, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5I like indie, metal and classic rock. They never said anything about classic rock but the classic I listen to is southern rock and the precursor to modern metal and hard rock. Also I love psychedelic rock. So I guess I would lack work ethic and have no self-esteem yet am very gentle, introverted and creative. Sounds about right especially the work part. I ***** hate work.
I really have nothing going for me. Thanks for ruining everything. - yoda17, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5I wonder about the causality, ie, people from different social and also geographic strata tend to hang out with people who have similar tastes. And so much of music is an acquired taste/preference.
E.g., I was really into classical music until I had a roommate in college who was really into techno after which I became a big techno listener. The same goes for a lot of music that I now listen to - and I do listen to and largely enjoy almost everything. - drumrave, on 09/07/2008, -1/+6Sounds like you don't know what you want
- Linds, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4It depends on what they define as heavy metal. I've met a lot a 'metalheads' who are quite the *****. Fortunately, I wouldn't consider what they listen to as being metal. Metal now is divided between heavy metal and '*****'.
- warrenterr, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5hell yea, Dream Theater is the band
- fabkebab, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4North describes it as a ***new*** kind of tribalism, based on musical taste.
Not exactly new is it? - apersaud, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Not very happy that they left out a lot of other genre's such as Latin music. I tend to think that Latin dancers (not ballroom Latin ) tend to be more sociable and outgoing since you have to interact in a dance scene (latin/salsa night club).
- johndavidjack, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Then what are Cannibal Corpse listeners:
sample lyrics from song "Entrails ripped from a virgin's *****"
Ruptured bowel, yanked
From her insides
Devirginized with my knife
Internally bleeding
Vagina, secreting
her blood-wet pussy
I am eating
on her guts I am feeding
Mutilated with a machete
I ***** her dead body
The first and last
Your life's only romance
My knife's jammed in your ass
As you die you orgasm
I think there are some exceptions to this study... - Kronos6948, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4More like Wagner is like most metal. Wagner, Bach, and Beethoven are highly influential in heavy metal music.
- blinky04, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Maybe that explains why I am a big fan of both Pink Floyd, and Lamb of God... two very opposite styles of music.
I wouldn't normally think of metalheads as gentle or creative though. - skate3214, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!
- h0ser, on 09/07/2008, -3/+7i don't like music, what does that make me?
*waits for a smart ass comment* - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4jungle drum and bass all the way with the skibadee!!!
- Metasquares, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4And what about people who will listen to almost anything?
- bryandean, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3This sounds like phrenology for the new millennium.
- yoda17, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3haha. i have Straight outta Compton and Claire de Lune back to back on mine.
- ZenMojo, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Absorbent and yellow and porous is he!
- IndigoMoss, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4I listen to a lot of old school punk rock, old school metal, and alternative rap (asheru, edo.g,ect..) Does that mean I am very gentile, but very aggressive at the same time?
- Pake, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3If I ever run into a metal group such as Slayer, I'll be sure to ask if they could use a hug.
- papashawn, on 09/07/2008, -6/+9Speaking as a lifelong musician, I'd like to call ***** on this story. People of all sorts of persuasions and temperaments listen to all different sorts of music.
- wattersm, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3What KIND of heavy metal? There's a ton of sub-genres and they're all different.
- luchid, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3At least he can tell the difference between your and you're.
- ZenMojo, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3It's a study. Studies can be argued against and debated on the facts and the merits of acquisition, but to simply disbelieve them out of hand is sort of anti-science.
- Chrysalii, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3*smart ass comment*
dead - tomwerman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I don't believe they were stating that Mahler is similar to Van Halen. If I understand the article correctly, they would assert that individuals who were fond of Mahler would bear some similarities to individuals who liked Van Halen ( If they would characterize Mahler as classical (plausible) and they would characterize Van Halen as Heavy Metal (questionable))
- Spoomeister, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Excuse me, if I may, sir, please, I'd like to reply to that. If you'd do me the honor of allowing me a week to compose a proper response in the form of a haiku.
Best wishes to you, sir. Neal be with you. - jcroweall7, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4FTA: "He also made a link between income bracket and musical tastes, with more affluent consumers liking more exciting, punchy music while those lower down the pay scale preferring more relaxing sounds."
But, I'm burying it because the article doesn't explain how he came to these conclusions. Did he just skim over 36,000 MySpace pages and make judgements on people? - cloudwalking, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3"... indie music lovers lack both self-esteem and the work ethic."
Some of the smartest people I know are huge fans of indie music.
My view might be biased because I'm in college, but I'm just not sure this statement holds up. - ashlocke, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Re-rea-read TFA.
- GeckoSlayer, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Someone needs to get these researches into a wall of death.

Skip to 1:35-ish. - Spoomeister, on 09/07/2008, -1/+3Oxymoronic?
- Khast, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2Well, it probably falls more under "traditional" might fall under "Polka" as most of it has a bouncy feel to it.
- Gemfinder, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2Well, have a listen to the back-story behind Dvorak's "The Water Goblin."
H'mmm, let's see, Das Rheingold's main plot revolves around brother-to-sister incest with decapitation thrown into the mix, just for fun.
Til Oelenspiegel's Merry Pranks depicted some really cruel jokes played on people.
"Night on Bald Mountain," Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique,
Handel's "See The Conquering Hero Comes" relates the tale of Judas Maccabaeus, who (if you remember your Old Testament) was the perpetrator of a genocide. A very pleasant depiction of the wholesale slaughter of women, children and babies!
Do we even have to broach the subject of Grand Opera? They've done MacBeth. Pagliacci's no merry walk in the park, either; I've seen it, it's Grand Guingol!
The Mad Scene in Die Zauberflöte, where the Queen of the Night curses her daughter to die unless she kills Sarastro! They performed it here last year and the Queen damn near shook the house apart!
Offenbach's Can-Can! Boy, they got the merriest music down there in the Underworld!
The Faust cycle...Cripes, everyone and their brother's cousin's dog's done that one.
The urban legendry surrounding Niccolo Paganini...
Need I continue? -
