He may speak a bit slower, but he still had no trouble making me smile as he joked about birthday candles, and dream as he spoke of the future of space travel and the human race.
R.I.P. Arthur.
PS - Love the fact that he has "2010: Odyssey Two" in the background!
And so, the last of the Holy Trinity Of Science Fiction has shunned his mortal coil.
We wish you the best on whatever journey awaits you Sir Arthur.
"Will I dream?" http://www.palantir.net/2001/tma1/wav/dream.wav
In my mind, he is right up there with Carl Sagen and Issac Asimov. A Great. Here are his three wishes (paraphrased):
1) Find some evidence for Extraterrestrial Life
2) Utilize clean, non-polluting or greehouse-gas emitting sources of energy.
3) Lasting peace in Sri Lanka.
The video was as moving as the final chapter in Issac Asimov's "I, Asimov".
Will we ever see science fiction writers as great as the Big Three agian? I hope so.
Sir Arthur... I didn't know enough about ya till you passed, but now I feel compelled to explore your work. I think I will appreciate it more after seeing your video because you have reminded me of what the human spirit is made of, and in my opinion, meant to be; free thinking, and on an everlasting quest for higher truth and meaning, while respecting your fellow neighbor in his pursuit of the same
I think it's amazing that he made such a brilliant statement in this video just shy of his death. I admit I've never read his novels but I've watched the film versions of 2001 and 2010 numerous times.
Siiigghhh... I want to be sad but it feels wrong. Im happy that he was able to put that video out for us all. To those wondering if we'll ever have writers like this again, God I hope so. But the way we're going these days... all the cell-texting leet speak and MySpace profiles are proof that one shouldnt really be getting their hopes up. While society has never seen a surge of amateur writers like the one that blogging has brought us, those are the older folks. Our children are literally growing up writing and reading words without vowels. I literally read the word "L-bow" today. Someone actually removed the e, capitalized the L, put a dash in there, and farted in the general direction of the English language just to ***** that up as hard as they could. Ive completely given up on American writers. Most are ***** already, but the advent of the internet, which should be a boon for enlightenment, is instead ushering in an era of people who think its okay to change the color of their text every sentence and think that, rather than an a well written piece, is how you attract attention. Sure theres a couple Alan Moores left, but how long till theyre gone too? I consider this the start of the end of a valuable era; the literate one. This might explain how a lot of the worlds problems are coming about these days. So much time spent evolving language and technology, only to sit back and ***** it all away because of the keyboard. Thanks keyboard, I love you too.
EDIT: Keypad. I remember now that computers the internet used to be full of smart, useful people. Its the advent of the cellphone and the keypad that played a larger roll in the destruction of our youth, I think.
I was surprised to read that Clarke was dead, and more than a little saddened. The worlds he created will never cease to amaze me.
Godspeed, Arthur, on your last journey.
He had such a long and amazing life I feel not so much saddened by his death, but melancholy of the thought he is no longer among us to pass on his wisdom.
It is funny how much people who one has never met can affect who you become. For me mr. Clarke was one of those people, his books expanding my imagination and shaping me into the person I am today.
Arthur c. Clarke was a personal hero of mine, and one I will truly miss. The man was a true inspiration to an entire generation of people who made space travel possible. I don't think there is anyone in the industry who can say that he wasn't a major player in their wanting to go to space.
I predict Mike Oldfield CD sales will go through the roof. I hope as we speak, Arthur is floating in the sea on Thalassa, looking up to the heavens and listening to the Songs of Distant Earth. Vale, Arthur.
Such an Amazing man with such and Amazing story. His last 3 wishes are not only for himself, but for us as well. Godspeed Arthur, thank you for your Wisdom and your guidance!
