Joe Stump's epic tat (Manliness points + 1000)
flickr.com — Joe Stump, lead architect at Digg and former "shred guitar supermo", went to Thailand a few weeks ago. He came back with a new addition to the guns show: an epic dragon that was bamboo tattoo'd on. It could probably eat you.

- mvanhorn, on 12/04/2007, -14/+6OMG, the Joe Stump who wrote the iPhone app?!?! OMG
- dtrinh, on 12/04/2007, -5/+2Nope, it's THE Joe Stump: http://joestump.com

- grendelboogie, on 12/04/2007, -10/+4Who is playing Feist in the background?
- jayadelson, on 12/04/2007, -5/+23All Digg employees have that tattoo, I thought.
- sfrench, on 12/04/2007, -2/+4I don't see any lolcat-speak in the tattoo. That makes me think this might not actually be Joe's arm.
- SuperWinner, on 12/04/2007, -2/+13A tat only adds manliness if you did something in order to deserve it. Like, going into the woods with nothing but a fork and coming out a month later with a bear head hat on your head.
Conversely the 92 pound Emo working at Burger king is never going to add manliness by getting a sleeve.- unloud, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2"Like, going into the woods with nothing but a fork and coming out a month later with a bear head hat on your head."
I'd say that's about the equivilant of working daily with Digg's Javascript and not shooting yourself. IMO, he gets the points.

- MattB123, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Do you have to get it removed if you leave? Power sander in the HR department for exit interviews?
- nsummy, on 12/04/2007, -6/+105I'm confused as to what is so special about this tattoo. I've certainly seen a lot bigger ones. And to be honest I've seen a lot better artwork. This one looks pretty ***** actually.
- Brennan, on 12/04/2007, -2/+25Same thing I thought..
- IgWannA, on 12/04/2007, -2/+19yeah, i don't get it... it's just a tattoo, not a good design in my opinion.
- FierceGrape, on 12/04/2007, -6/+12This wasn't done with a tattoo gun it was done with a sharp piece of bamboo. That's whats manly about it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYZa3SEKgsQ- Rahodeb, on 12/04/2007, -2/+4seems like a lot of work for such a ***** tatoo. Looks like it was drawn on with markers.
- Ravatar, on 12/04/2007, -1/+3You miss the point, that's how these tattoos normally turn out.
- Rahodeb, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1I didn't miss it at all, that was my point. Why would you get a bamboo tatoo that takes longer, hurts more and ends up looking like ass?
- Ravatar, on 12/04/2007, -1/+3You miss the point, that's how these tattoos normally turn out.
- Rahodeb, on 12/04/2007, -2/+4seems like a lot of work for such a ***** tatoo. Looks like it was drawn on with markers.
- VelvetEvolver, on 12/04/2007, -2/+12If it was done traditional style (mallet and needles), that helps out a little bit. I can only assume from 15 hours put in that it was done with a machine. Either way, and this isn't said to hate on the tattoo, but it certainly could look a lot better. I've seen way worse in my day, but the linework isn't up to par, and the color didn't seem to hold up well. Part of it could be from improper aftercare, and/or picking at scabs, but my guess would be the artist just wasn't that great. Learn from it, folks.... tattoos are serious business. You should never look for the cheapest, you should look for the best. If you can't afford the best, wait until you can, or don't get it at all.
- Ravatar, on 12/04/2007, -7/+1Read the ***** flikr link, it was a bamboo tattoo.. the color is exactly as its supposed to be and the linework is masterful if you look at the full-sized link.
- VelvetEvolver, on 12/04/2007, -1/+4Fair enough.... my point is, if you can do a tattoo with a dog turd and a paperclip, fantastic. That doesn't mean it looks good by any standard. For a bamboo tattoo, sure, it looks okay.... HOWEVER, it still looks like ass compared to what you could've gotten with a more talented artist working with a modern machine. I've been in the business for 10 years, I know what looks good, and what doesn't, even objectively speaking, and if you think any of that is "masterful", god help you if and when you get a tattoo, but at least you'll be easy to please.
- Ravatar, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1oops.. check comment above =(
- Ravatar, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1By what I can see, the artist who did this work was going for exactly the look he finished with. You can tell by the fact that the linework is overall pretty uniform throughout the tattoo, as well as the color effects. I'd also fathom a guess that he completed this tattoo freehand.
Just because it's not your thing doesn't mean its good or bad. I'm no mondern tattoo expect and I couldn't really say whats excellent and "only decent" like you could, however I can usually point out a ***** sleeve that's completed with a gun.
Anyways, art is often in the eye of the beholder and if he is happy with the work, then I'm happy for him. - VelvetEvolver, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0Absolutely... your last point was the best. Like I said before, I wasn't trying to hate on the person, I just get frustrated in this line of work, and it doesn't necessarily apply to this situation, where people praise mediocrity as greatness.

- salomejones, on 12/04/2007, -2/+3I have many tattoos bigger than that, and some of them are much, much better. And I don't consider myself manly at all, to say the least.
- smackhero, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1i have a very similar tat on my left arm (green-blue dragon on black wind bars), but i think i like much better. why would you go to thailand to get a horimono style tattoo? if you're gonna go all the way to asia, might as well go to the right country--well, i got mine in pasadena, so it's not exactly a traditional japanese irezumi either, so maybe i shouldn't be one to talk, but man, at least pick a tattoo artist who's a decent artist. those wind bars/clouds look screwed up...
- Kelgann, on 12/04/2007, -13/+6Hopefully by the time your skin starts to sag, they will have better methods for removing tattoos.
- radishes, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1because the sagging skin look would look great without the tattoo, right?
- JibberGeorge, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1No you idiot. He said Tattoo REMOVAL.
- catalysis, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1When Kelgann is 90, he is going to be running around and playing beach volleyball in a g-string, showing off his hot bod to all the babes. Thats when the dull, straghtedge life will really pay off.

Conformity is relative. If someone reads what you said and doesn't get the tattoo they wanted to get, then they are conforming to your view. So calling someone a conformist has no point.
- rayraym0fucka, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5you're so radical.
- wipis, on 12/04/2007, -4/+8What makes it so epic. It's really nice but I know people with 10 times that much ink and its just as nice if not better.
- drakenlot, on 12/04/2007, -2/+1True. Come on, has the poster not seen someone with a body tattoo?
- Ravatar, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2This is not a traditional tattoo. It's handmade with a stalk of bamboo and typically done freestyle. Art is open to many interpretations, I've got no idea why so many "tattoo experts" are spouting off about the quality of the tattoo. Believe me, this is very likely what he was expecting to recieve. I personally love the torn-color effect and mural-like appearance.

- skyshock1, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1I thought the same thing! I actually had a summer class with the Joe Stump at Berklee, and I can assure you he absolutely blows away THIS Joe Stump on guitar.
- drakenlot, on 12/04/2007, -1/+10His manliness may have gone up for the tat, but the fact he's worried about his mama's opinion negates the gain.

- KenSPT, on 12/04/2007, -1/+3I'd much rather get a good tattoo via 2007 methods, than a sh!tty tattoo from a peice of bamboo ...

all my ink has been done with machines, and i personally prefer contemporary/western-style tats, but traditional japanese irezumi artists deserve a lot of respect in my opinion. and you really shouldn't judge all traditional bamboo tattoos based on one poor example which isn't even representative of the true cultural heritage of bamboo tattoos.

- smackhero, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1IMO a tattoo, or any other kind of, artist shouldn't try to emulate the artistic traditions of another culture if they're gonna do such a ***** job of it. it's clear from the design that he's trying to copy the widely recognized style of japanese horimono even though he's had no training and has not studied the tradition of japanese irezumi.
and this has nothing to do with subjective interpretations of art. the technique of the artist is clearly very poor. the shading just looks rushed. i have several tattoos of my own, and on one of my own tats i could tell that the tattoo artist was rushing when finishing up the background resulting in the shading being very rough and unclean. this was understandable as i was at the end of my 3rd 4 hour session in 3 days, and the artist could tell i was squirming a little. but the tattoo in this picture looks like the artist just rushed through the entire piece.

- rengeek, on 12/04/2007, -5/+2Despite any inherent craft or artistry, a white middle aged guy of Euro-centric decent getting a tattoo representing another culture seems a bit trendy and shallow to me. But if the chicks dig it until it becomes a saggy blob in ten years then go for it.
- justhim, on 12/04/2007, -3/+4Who ***** cares!
- schmons, on 12/04/2007, -4/+2you guys dont understand the real story here. its not the tattoo that is the real story, its the way he got the tattoo... 15 hours of straight pain with a sharp bamboo needle and a mallet
- KenSPT, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2No pics, no proof ... :-)
- clickwir, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2So it was done with bamboo.... that just compounds the idiocy of it.
Dumb move 1: Decide to get a tattoo
Dumb move 2: Pick a bad picture
Dumb move 3: Get it done with a lot of pain
Dumb move 4: get it on digg
This just has stupid moron written all over it.
- muleskinner, on 12/04/2007, -7/+4Wow, you fella's are a bunch of assholes. Really, if you don't like the Tat keep your ***** mouth shut about it. Theres no reason to talk so much trash kids.
- kokuou, on 12/04/2007, -1/+3You're new here, aren't you?
- clickwir, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2How about this, I can and will comment on anything I ***** want to. I will not keep my mouth shut just because you say so.
- TrevorBelmont, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1This is the risk you run when you submit yourself to the internet in order to bolster your "hip-hop street credentials". I appreciate that Digg, unlike so many other hug-box communities, will sound off if they disapprove of something rather than sit around tugging each other off so that everyone feels smart, talented and beautiful even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
- KenSPT, on 12/04/2007, -2/+3sorry, accidentally did comment instead of reply, bury away
- PeppermintPig, on 12/04/2007, -3/+3You should have found a better tattoo artist. At least get someone to go over the black lines again and add some variable thickness to those lines, some weighting.
Does this design have any significant meaning or did they get it for the 'coolness' factor? It's anachronistic for sure, but lots of people get tattoos like this. The worst part about it is the poor attempt to copy the style.- Ravatar, on 12/04/2007, -4/+2God damn you idiots, READ THE DESCRIPTION. This is not a gun tattoo, it's a bamboo tattoo. This is the effect the artist was going for when the tattoo was created. Notice the torn color shading, and overall rustic texture? That's not an accident. Learn to appreciate art.
- smackhero, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4this is what a traditional japanese irezumi done with bamboo is supposed to look like: http://www.tattoovirtual.com/japanese/Japanese%20L ...
just because it's done with bamboo doesn't mean it has to be all spoty and poorly shaded. you can get solid shading and a well-drawn design, and still have it inked using bamboo. it just costs tens of thousands of dollars and takes weeks or months, not a couple of hundred dollars and a weekend in thailand.- PeppermintPig, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Now THAT is art.
This guy's tattoo, on the other hand, feels cheap and comicky looking.
- PeppermintPig, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Now THAT is art.
- TrevorBelmont, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Just because you can explain it doesn't mean it's good art. So, they successfully planned and implemented a ***** looking tattoo. It must be difficult having to deal with insipid plebeians like us all the time. I guess we'll never learn.

I'm into ink myself but for ***** sake people, whether it was made with bamboo, acupuncture needles, hypodermic needles, or rusted scrap metal who the ***** cares?
If someone is a masochist and likes to walk around with an ugly, UGLY ass tat does that make this pic Digg-worthy? The only newsworthy thing about this is the method and his penchant for pain. Nothing more. Nothing to see either. - AnarchyReigns, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1The reason that tattoo is considered hardcore is because they beat it into his skin with a bamboo stick. That's one of the most painful tattoo experiences you can face. I'm getting one next week!
- clickwir, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2If knowing that, and seeing how bad this one is... you are still going to do it. You, are more stupid than the guy who this is posted about.

- JibberGeorge, on 12/04/2007, -1/+4Methods evolve for a reason. Getting a tattoo with an old antiquated method doesn't make him manly it makes him stupid.
Especially since the tattoo is PERMANENT and you want the best method to give you the best result for your PERMAENT tattoo.. WTF is this crap?- smackhero, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1that tattoo sucks, but you're an idiot. japanese irezumi artists still do excellent work with bamboo that is respected by the worldwide tattooing community. if you want to get a real horimono tattoo by a japanese artist trained in it, it costs tens of thousands of dollars and will have to be scheduled years in advance. any professional tattoo artist will tell you that traditional bamboo tattoos, if done right, are just as good if not often superior in quality to most contemporary style tattoos done with machines.
don't assume that rolex watches are all pieces of ***** and inferior to digital watches because you see a crappy counterfeit rolex. this tattoo was done by a crappy artist in thailand trying to emulate horimono tattoos done by japanese irezumi masters in japan.

This is what great tattoo art should look like: http://i9.tinypic.com/71rk7zs.jpg- alpinweiss88, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1HEY! This is work by James Kern. F'n unbelievable incredible artist. I had mine done when he was still in Chicago. I have never once regretted getting it, I feel sorry for those people who have regrets about their work. His site is http://tattoomonster.com Look at his gallery for a small portion of what he is capable of doing. Funny story, when he was doing mine, a couple of punk kids strolled in off the street and said "How long is the wait?" He didn't even look up and replied "Two months" They just walked out. He wasn't kidding, but the wait was absolutely worth it.
- crotchbat, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1James is now in Portland and we miss him terribly. He came to Chicago this past summer and I was lucky enough to get my tattoo finished (3 years in the making). My wife and I have converted many folks to the Cult of Kern - after seeing his work, they swear James will be the only one to ever tattoo them.

real irezumi tatted with bamboo are only done by japanese masters of horimono. and they take months to complete and cost a fortune. just because this tattoo attempts to emulate that style--very poorly--and is also done with bamboo doesn't make it cool or manly. in fact, it just makes the wearer of the tat look like an ass for getting a fake japanese tat by a ***** thai artist.- crotchbat, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2@smackhero: it's not a rip off, it's an Alex Grey inspired piece. In fact, James was present at the 2006 Visionary Primitive, collaborating with Alex and a group of modern tattoo masters.

- alpinweiss88, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1HEY!
- tibbon, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1This Joe Stump? http://www.joestump.com/
I didn't know he had anything to do with Digg. I just knew that he was a Berklee shred-god. If it isn't that Joe, then he should remove the title of anything shred from ever being used to describe him,- opbarnes, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0Not the same Joe Stump. It's http://www.joestump.net
- Velvolver, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1A large tattoo of a ridiculously cartoonish dragon. A good waste of about 600 dollars and a good arm.
Of course a person who would get this would have wasted the arm and money on something else stupid anyways. - dogbyte_13, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3great its a tattoo, ive got 11 of them, NEXT
- Velvolver, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1And they don't make you any more important, NEXT!
- john2kx, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Sorry, a piece of "art" that looks like a dog ate some crayons and shat on his arm doesn't really add that many manliness points..
- HoraceQS, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Stump's music is awesome.
- oilcan, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3wow that tattoo is completely average and uninspiring in just about every way possible.
- djdavey, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1If he wasn't a Digg employee, would this get Dugg?
- TheProfessional, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Of course not.
- TrevorBelmont, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1"I love the new picture section so much that I'll Digg any picture that I can find!" -Everyone
- catalysis, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1lol, diggers hate tattoos with a passion. I dont even know why someone would post a tattoo to a website where the main demographic is upper-middle class computer geeks.
- TrevorBelmont, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1What are you talking about? Many, many "diggers" have tattoos. I, for one, am fond of them. Don't project your own opinions onto everyone else.
- Gunsotsu, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Buried because this is exactly why the image section of Digg is such a terrible idea. Now every schmuck with a Flickr or Photobucket account will post the most nonsensical ***** ever in the hopes of their 15 seconds of Digg fame. Lame!!
