- cosworth99, on 06/20/2009, -2/+48Canada has jails?
- shutaro, on 06/20/2009, -0/+36Those Canadian prisons are brutal.
- jtotheoe, on 06/21/2009, -0/+31Is there an old-people digg that we can submit this to? perhaps a nursing home bulletin board somewhere?
- deff, on 06/21/2009, -1/+26Inmate: Can I go out through here?
Guard: Just be back by bedtime
Inmate: Okay - youbequiet, on 06/21/2009, -0/+23Beings Canadians, they politely come back.
- youbequiet, on 06/21/2009, -4/+25Fortified igloos.
- AmyVernon, on 06/20/2009, -3/+24They obviously haven't met my grandchildren. Oh, wait, I don't have any.
- psolms, on 06/21/2009, -0/+20the best is that the canadian prisoners actually do come back by bedtime.
- spookyttws, on 06/21/2009, -1/+18What creeped me out is that my real name is Justin, so I've actually hears that exact line "Is that you, Justin?"
The real problem is that this is going to be forwarded around to everyone's parents/grandparents and then some kid who wreaks his car on a road trip to Canada is going to be stuck in jail for a week because no one will believe him. - Kaegro, on 06/21/2009, -0/+14Where else would they sleep and get breakfast?
- bscene, on 06/21/2009, -2/+15that's just silly, we don't have jails here ... nobody is committing any crimes because we're all so high on BC bud and pleased with our free health care
this is aboot the craziest story i've ever heard eh!
now if you'll excuse me, i've got to go ... my back bacon is burning - stinieroo, on 06/21/2009, -0/+13Something similar happen to my husband's grandmother (jail was not mentioned, but a car accident was). We don't call her 'grandma' though; (no one in the family does), so she knew immediately that something was fishy.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -0/+11yes it is true, they are called "television advertisements"
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -0/+10All the prisoners run away for 9 months a year, it sucks.
- diggforworld, on 06/21/2009, -0/+9Smart Grandma.
- turpenine, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8that you know about.
- asgardshill, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8No they don't. There's a way to human-engineer anybody into doing something stupid, including you and including me.
- RogerStrong, on 06/21/2009, -2/+10Likewise, Canadians are often targeted by scams originating in the U.S.
- hitkaiser, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7babushka
- Velnich, on 06/21/2009, -1/+6If they took off to Canada without telling anyone, they deserves it.
- Velnich, on 06/21/2009, -1/+5I'm not sure why you would post this. It sounds defensive. Of course Canadians are targeting by scams originating in the U.S. and also by those originating in a number of other countries. I imagine those in the states could say the same.
- Gusbob, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4You speak sense. Must believe in you. Here's my money.
asgardshill is right. You just have to find something they really care about. People usually don't think too rationally when emotions are involved. - Velnich, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4dun Dun DUN...
- CheeseburgerBro, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4As a public service for my American brothers and sisters out there, here is a handy, quick reference guide for some of our Canadian laws which may differ from those over the border. By paying heed, you can avoid Canadian prison in fact and thus the "scam who cried wolf" scenario.
1. A lot of people know you can't chew gum in public in Singapore. Fewer people realize this rule also applies to the Canadian dominion, where "nuissance chewing" (or "la mastication barberien") is punishable by up to 2 days in weekend jail or forced attendence at a single Celion Dion concert.
2. Bogarting the joint nets different penalties in different regions, with a rough guideline being laxer sentences in the centre of the country with harsher punishments enacted toward the periperhies (Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic). In British Columbia, for instance, bogarting the joint may result in a fine of up to $300 per infraction, while in Saskatchewan you'll simply have a beer bottle broken over your head.
3. Women are obliged to go topless on all beaches. Failure to conform to this traditional Canadian edict will only be tolerated in situations in which the woman in question is intolerably foul to look upon -- and I'm talking foul in comparison to Inuit grandmothers here, so it's a pretty extreme situation. American tourists shouldn't imagine they can hide behind modesty or religious objections, as the duty to bear breasts is deeply enshrined in the Canadian Constitution (it's totally near the bottom, which is about as deep as you can go on a piece of paper).
4. Live and let live. Failure to feign tolerance of other people's stupid points of view is punishable in nearly all jurisdictions by having your intestines yanked out of your caca-hole by a team of frenzied donkeys. It simply doesn't pay to be rude in Canada.
Yours in Trudeau,
Cheeseburger Brown - sleeknerve, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4This happened to my english teacher's mother. She gave away several thousand dollars before she caught on. And my teacher had no idea she had that type of money. I really hope this goes away, it makes me sad everytime i here a case of this happening.
- Ontarian, on 06/21/2009, -1/+5Her name is Neda.
- joannchilada, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3This happened to my stepfather's mother about a year ago. Incredibly sad. The scammer called and said, "This is your grandson," and she instantly responded with one of her grandson's names, and that was the start of the hook. They didn't catch the person, of course. She felt stupid and was so embarrassed. Nothing made me more angry than someone making an 85 year old woman feel stupid.
- youbequiet, on 06/21/2009, -1/+4Being*
- hanban, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3targeting vulnerable people is not cool.
- CasualJesus, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3My grandparents both got hit by this. Luckily they're not too old and senile, so they didn't get scammed.
- nyxerebos, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3no, but it's effective, which is more important to scammers
- Fr0stbyte124, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3It's only a first gen xbox, though. And they only have, like 5 games for it.
- spepin, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3I reply to them virtually any chance I get.
It's hilarious to string them along. - graemee, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3Waits for next emails to use time travel loophole to scam diggers.
- brownsound00, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3In the words of Ricky from Trailer Park Boys, "*****, I miss jail."
- fivefootfour, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2Don't believe a word of it. I live in Canada and every day I see American grandchildren dragged off the streets and into unmarked police vans. The ransoms are Harper's plan to balance Canada's budget.
- KingBabi, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2You lucked out: my grandparents shelled out a ton of cash and were totally strung along for days.
- AlbionEikon, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3Yes, but just like Michael Moore documented about our houses... we leave the doors unlocked.
- Vikesrock, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Coordinates? How many people know the coordinates they are located at?
- whatit, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2I guess Nigerians get to be jealous for once..
- partysan, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Drive drunk and kill someone will get you 15 years, out after 7. Happened to a co-worker of mine. So yeah, you don't have a clue.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2"Old" often mean clueless (***** or otherwise)
Why do you think that scammers are targeting the elderly? - asgardshill, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3Not quite on topic here, but whatever you do, NEVER reply to any Nigerian 419 scammer's email. I made the bad mistake of telling one of these scammers off in a painfully-detailed reply about a year ago, including opinions about what I thought about his heritage, his lack of a diverse family tree, and the diminutive size of his genitalia. Now I receive 5-10 of these scam emails each and every day. So, if you value your email box, don't do it.
- jp2535, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2This happened to my grand parrents last October. They used my name but he didn't sound like me.........Somehow my school got targeted.....CWU
- GeekNurse, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Bubbie
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Good luck to them trying this ***** with me. I'd catch them on the whole "Canadian jail" fairytale before even remembering that I don't have grandchildren.
- Velnich, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3Canada is mentioned, but I don't see the article sighting any evidence on where the scammers are actually calling from.
- asgardshill, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Yes, 419eaters and other web sites that do this make for hilarious reading. And if I had the time, I'd make burning these crooks a full-time job.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3Canadian jails, aren't they just glorified LAN parties where prisoners play Xbox and watch TV?
- Gusbob, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2For Your Information:
You can chew gum in Singapore. You just can't buy it. And better don't get caught sticking it under desks/spitting it on the ground. -
