- LoveWidescreen, on 08/29/2008, -2/+198"Here's a bumper sticker I'd like to see: 'We are the proud parents of a child whose self esteem is sufficient that we don't need to advertise his minor scholastic achievements on the back of our car.'"
-- George Carlin - Hawker400, on 08/29/2008, -4/+197Your kid sucks.
- jmpeagle, on 08/29/2008, -0/+151no need to worry, I don't even have a kid
- jmpeagle, on 08/29/2008, -17/+165i tell my kid he is retarded and stupid ever day. It forces him to forever pursue my approval and will then study constantly. Anything less than an A, and I will refuse to even look my kid in the eye for a week.
- Reynardine, on 08/29/2008, -7/+142I worked myself into burnout and nearly derailed my entire life because of parental pressure. If, God forbid, you're actually serious, please understand that there's far, *far* more to success, or even to admission to an Ivy league college, than good grades and test scores.
- inigomntoya, on 08/29/2008, -0/+103Oh yeah - well your kid aint as gifted as my kid! My gifted kid could gift the hell out of your kid with his eyes closed. In fact, my kid is so damn gifted we aren't even putting him through school. We are just taking him right out of Kindergarten and parading him around to different fortune 500 companies who are conducting interviews for CEO openings. Pretty soon he will be signing paychecks for people who make your cereal.
- Reynardine, on 08/29/2008, -0/+94In that case, I need to take some sarcasm pills and get some rest.

- smacksaw, on 08/29/2008, -0/+65Good article. I studied child development in college and became a teacher. I've found the things in the article are true.
I think that upon further research into the subject, we're going to find out that people fall into one of two categories. One is that they have unusually unbalanced intelligence in certain areas due to things like autism or Aspberger's. The other is what I've found, which is the "use it or lose it" thing, where as the article said - you need to stimulate your child. I think that children who don't get enough stimulation are "average" and those who get lots of stimulation, support and opportunity are the "gifted" ones.
All I know is I have had plenty of students in my life who claimed they were bad learners or dumb and I was able to teach them to mastery. And it's not because I'm "gifted" as a teacher, it's because anyone can learn and be really awesome. You just have to know how to teach them.
In summary, either your kid can play the violin at age 2 for some unknown reason, or you take your time and let them learn violin over their lifetime. Everyone evens out. - csrster, on 08/29/2008, -0/+64My daughters seem to be highly gifted only at watching Hannah Montana and eating ice-cream. Preferably simultaneously. I may need to print my own bumper stickers.
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -0/+63If you think about it, just about all of us had to win a 2 million sperm race.
Next time you're in a 2 million person race and you win, I'll give you a gold star for being special. - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -1/+63You don't have to be gifted to take AP courses.
- orlyfactor, on 08/29/2008, -2/+61But will be laughed at later in life when he's working as a janitor.
- errortype, on 08/28/2008, -5/+58This is true for every kid, gifted, ha right. Now my kid is really gifted.
- kaniz, on 08/29/2008, -0/+48Slow kids are the new normal, because we cant fail them so we dont hurt their feelings. Leaving normal kids thinking they are gifted - when they are just average. Then the truly gifted gets are so bored they end up acting out.
- hellsing47, on 08/29/2008, -1/+44My children are going to shoot laser beams from their eyes.
- WoollyMittens, on 08/29/2008, -2/+43Every parent thinks their child is special. Seems like easy targets to fleece.
The sad truth is that half the population has below average intelligence and your crotch maggots are very likely to be just as stupid as you. - Reynardine, on 08/29/2008, -3/+43The article states that "less than 2% of students are gifted" but fails to define the term. Having seen many people who are geniuses in some respects and idiots in others, I can't take an article that shoe-horns every person into the same scale of giftedness seriously.
- cbartlett, on 08/29/2008, -1/+40RIP
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -1/+40dupe comment = childish cry for attention.
I think you are a gifted individual (by gifted I mean special (by special I mean a ***** retard)). - webkami, on 08/29/2008, -2/+40Yes, it *seems* so.
- CrimsonBlur, on 08/29/2008, -1/+37You... are joking, right? I really can't tell. If not, let me ask you something: how stringent can these requirements possibly be when 7 out of 8 students tested are labeled "gifted"?
- parax, on 08/29/2008, -0/+31By definition of such words, you can't have 7 gifted people in a group of 8. You have 7 average kids and a slow kid.
"Gifted" would imply that your kid has mental faculties beyond those of his peers. If his mental faculties are just like his peers, he's normal. You can't be "gifted, just like everyone else."
The fact that your kid and so many of his peers were determined to be "gifted" is precisely what this article is talking about, the misapplication of the label. Of course you like to think your kid is gifted, just like 95% of people think they're the 5% exception that the rules don't apply to.
If you give 100 people the Stanford-Binet IQ test, 95% of the people taking it will fall between 90 and 110. 95% of those people will believe they scored above 130.
So yes, I believe your kid is just as gifted as all of his peers. - NoamChimpsky, on 08/29/2008, -1/+30http://www.flickr.com/photos/tmlsb/228428783/
Midvale School for the Gifted - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -4/+33"As an actually gifted child" lol,
Anyway I was on of the "apparently gifted" and well if your parents didn't physically, mentally or sexually abuse you + provided the inferred food, clothing and shelter I would say the did pretty damn good job by you.
Nothing is stopping you getting of your arse and pursuing lofty intellectual goals. - wing05, on 08/29/2008, -0/+28I'll dig you up and encourage you to write for those motivational poster companies.
- jester55, on 08/29/2008, -2/+29I've been gifted with an extraordinarily large ego. I'm also a genius.
- orlyfactor, on 08/29/2008, -1/+28Here Syphon8, have a cookie.
- bitbytebit, on 08/29/2008, -0/+27syphon - the only thing worse than 'internet tough guys' are internet 'genius's' ..
- wing05, on 08/29/2008, -2/+28A few years ago, I worked as a tutor at a study center.
One of the owners of the center had a daughter who did very well in high school with very little effort and actually found the homework boring.
I don't know if she would be defined as "gifted" or not, but the story is that her school wanted to put her into advanced classes for the "gifted" that would challenge her.
The daughter declined and instead took on all sorts of extra curricular clubs and sports and enjoyed herself while still maintaining her high average. It got to the point where the school was bugging my boss about encouraging her daughter to sign up for those classes. But upon talking with her daughter, she reasoned that all the smart kids were in there busting their asses off and getting far lower grades than in the regular classes. Colleges and Universities just have a space for one's average percentage on the application form, so it really didn't matter.
Who would've benefited? Bragging rights for the parent? Bragging rights for the school to say they have X number of participants in their "gifted" program?
In my opinion, the true example of giftedness here was the daughter being able to recognize that she had better things to do than bust her ass off for very little return. - IndigoMoss, on 08/29/2008, -1/+27I was considered "gifted" and went to "gifted" class through 5-6th grade. In 7th grade, I opted out of it to take P.E. I'm glad I did too, because the other kids that were in the class with me never really got a chance to act like a "normal" kid. It's kind of like how the "gifted" class is in Malcom in the Middle. They try to separate your from the "mainstream" kids and usually the kids in the class were accepted into an IB program from a different school.
I think I made the right choice, while I didn't learn as much as they did as far as traditional knowledge is concerned. I was able to learn a lot of social skills and I think that really helps when you get older. - KZodron, on 08/29/2008, -6/+31Y'know, everyone is gifted in some area. Infact, life itself could be counted as a gift. :-)
- smacksaw, on 08/29/2008, -1/+24My two oldest kids are 13 and 14 and are starting college this semester. It doesn't mean they're gifted. It means they're taking challenging courses.
Any child could start college at age 12 if they did 6 hours of homeschooling per day, every day from age 6-12.
In a way, your kids are lagging way behind. What's wrong with them? - Radical5, on 08/29/2008, -0/+23Agreed. Just because you never had any friends growing up and got to spend all your time indoors exposing yourself to literature doesn't mean you're gifted. Who would have known that reading more would increase your understanding and fluency of the English language?!
- Zipko, on 08/29/2008, -0/+22I couldn't read at 2, but I managed to memorize a couple books word for word that I had read to me all the time. So when people came over I could pick it up and pretend I'm reading by reciting the words. Everyone thought I was gifted, jokes on them =)
- Azarken, on 08/29/2008, -0/+22You sure liked your multiples of two...ever do anything at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 that I don't care about?
- elhaf, on 08/29/2008, -0/+21I still read at the level of someone twice my age, which would be a 92-year-old.
- thegrantman, on 08/29/2008, -0/+21"and all the children are above average." Garrison Keillor
- davidleeroth, on 08/29/2008, -2/+23I remember that I never made the honor roll because I would never shut the ***** up in class :). I most certainly had the grades.
Honor roll stickers mean NOTHING. - rabidg00se, on 08/29/2008, -1/+22No one ever called me gifted, and my parents never tried to make me so. My high school was giving out college credits like candy since ninth grade (I graduated with 36, transferable to any state college in New York). I now attend the University of Chicago, which is known for being a pretty awesome school. I'm still not gifted, I'm just a dude who other people think is kind of smart.
In short, sorry; your son is probably a little above average intelligence, just like me and you and the rest of us on Digg. - forcedfx, on 08/29/2008, -0/+20I'm pretty sure I could out run all 2 million of them.
- bratterscain, on 08/29/2008, -0/+20In before parents bragging about how their kids really are gifted and special to distinguish their kids from the rest of society to cover their own insecurity issues.
Too late. - CrimsonBlur, on 08/29/2008, -0/+19Wait, I'm confused... I thought you said they were tested in 4th grade? I'm starting to think you are not making a joke since you have made (approximately) the same comment twice.
I hate to break it to you, but lots of kids take "college level courses" before college, it's called Running Start. None of the people that participated in that program that I know were "gifted". Most of them ended up working retail or some other dead-end job. - BuckCynnie, on 08/29/2008, -0/+19I was considered "gifted" too, but then they realized their mistake and relabeled me "special".
- OneLess, on 08/29/2008, -1/+20Nor could we.
- tigertiger, on 08/29/2008, -0/+19You don't like bear? You have problems, dude! Everybody likes a cool glass of bear.
- elhaf, on 08/29/2008, -0/+19Yes, actually. It's been "floating around" since Orwell wrote his satire on communism.
