- AmyVernon, on 12/22/2008, -10/+231I think it's a bit of an overreaction. There are more boys than girls here on Digg. And the anonymity of the Internet makes it easier for people to say things they might not say publicly. But most if it is just for lulz. I laugh at the comments where people say things like, "OK, now make me a sammich" (and I fully expect the replies to this comment to be rife with the silliness reflected in the subbed article.
But I've also found Digg to be very welcoming to this and other moms, despite the fact that we probably too often mention our children. "Feminists" - and I actually consider myself one - need to get a sense of humor, too, and just not take themselves so frakkin' seriously. Or, should I say, srsly. - chadell, on 12/22/2008, -5/+122I love my mum
- doob10163, on 12/22/2008, -3/+102I love her too!
- scoetrain, on 12/22/2008, -27/+111Typing all day is never gonna get the floors clean.
- zacharytelschow, on 12/22/2008, -17/+97What a bunch of bitchy whining. Her article on feminism only got 180 diggs. Boo hoo hoo. Having "Top Ten Moments of Feminism in 2008" and heralding a black president is antithetical to the progress claimed in those milestones. You want people to quit talking about race (or sex)? Quit talking about it yourself and be willing to be judged by the content of your character.
- e3winter, on 12/22/2008, -7/+84So her conclusion is based pretty much on sexist comments she's read? The author saying digg is sexist is like me saying women are bad drivers. I have plenty of personal anecdotes that back up that conclusion, but i know that i can't judge a huge population based on my personal experience alone.
- williambeutler, on 12/22/2008, -14/+88It's certainly male-oriented. Does that make it inherently sexist? I wouldn't say it's any more sexist than Sex and the City (note: just to be clear, I have never seen more than five minutes of Sex and the City).
- BoxerTS, on 12/22/2008, -3/+75As a writer you should know your audience, and the audience on Digg is going to be mostly young males. Toss in a dash of competitiveness and anonymity and you get a race to the bottom in terms of content.
It is amazing to me that your solution is to force the moderators at Digg to delete comments you find offensive though. This will not only do nothing to "solve" the problem, but I would guess it will exacerbate it. If you are not interested in changing minds, but only preventing people from saying things you dislike, you are free to write an addon that will change all comments to "Go Women" or "Yay Equality" or whatever slogan you may have, in order to reach your utopic state where you only see positive and encouraging comments. - AmyVernon, on 12/22/2008, -9/+76That doesn't even make any sense.
- Dorolicious, on 12/22/2008, -16/+81Ok, so we should be blaming feminists for sexism? Nice logic WeAreSparta...
I don't think that Digg users intend to be sexist, it may just be that more young men use the site than women and they reflect the interests and preferences of a generally sexist society. Also in my experience, the digg elites tend be quite exclusive, almost like a digital "old boys club". - ravedigger, on 12/22/2008, -20/+78Only a woman would ask this question or care about the answer.
- Slovenian6474, on 12/22/2008, -5/+56This sounds like she's complaining about her article getting buried and blaming it on the "sexist boys' club". Then calls in all her friends to post comments and digg her article up for the sake of women's rights everywhere. Face it, feminists are troll bait. Show me one forum/social site that doesn't have trolls.
Jempina stated this earlier in these comments "I like your analysis - and I think that's the point - you can't just walk away from something when it's racist, sexist or otherwise."
That's pretty much asking for it.
I could only imagine how irate she would be if it turned into a mysterious digg graveyard.
Anyways, some more SMBC humor. (It's a productive day at work)

- mwhitney, on 12/22/2008, -7/+55The reaction to this post should be enough to have an answer. Let's see.
- theblueprint, on 12/22/2008, -4/+52In the interest of transparency, I buried this submission as lame.
Many, many people before you have complained that their article didn't hit the front page. The article didn't hit the front page because it wasn't popular among the Digg userbase. It's got nothing to do with sexism, and everything to do with the (lack) of appeal the article held.
As far the comments go, as AmyVernon says above, it's for the "lulz". If you want to use Digg to drive traffic to your site, you're going to have to develop a thicker skin and understand that *anything* put forth for public consumption will have its detractors. - SoopaflySAM, on 12/22/2008, -4/+48Women have vaginas
- sirjimithy, on 12/22/2008, -5/+48Feminists are just like any "rights" group. They just go too far, to the point where it's no longer about equality, but about superiority. But they never want to do away with the laws and social customs that favor them... Where's the equality in not doing away with alimony, or affirmative action?
- granolajoe, on 12/22/2008, -18/+60The morons that posted the idiotic comments featured in the blog post are internet tough guys that like to talk ***** online and probably haven't even seen a vagina since exiting their mothers' birth canals.
- PVanderVossen, on 12/22/2008, -3/+44I think the author doesn't see the difference between actual sexism, and sexist jokes. It is possible to make sexist jokes (which ARE funny, regardless of which sex is being targetted) without actually being sexist. Digg commenters fall over themselves trying to be the first to make a good one liner. That doesn't make the entire community sexist.
- pintomp3, on 12/22/2008, -7/+42what? that's like blaming the civil rights movement for racism.
- EdgarVerona, on 12/22/2008, -5/+39Is Digg sexist? Well... yes. Now get in the kitchen and make me a pie.
...Kidding!
...Unless you actually want to make me a pie. - BeShirtHappy, on 12/22/2008, -6/+40Amen, sister!
- theguesser10, on 12/22/2008, -1/+32What these self-proclaimed "feminists" need to realize is that the people saying these things say the same kind of stuff about guys, they're just joking around; the joke being OMG did he really just say that? What feminists in the real world need to realize is that no, no that guy you work with is not being sexist. He's treating you the same way he treats everyone, regardless of gender. Feminists have this fairytale idea of the world where being treated like an equal means being treated well. So of course they ask to be treated like the men are and then try to sue when they find out being a guy isn't as great as they had hoped.
What I want to see is a gay guy calling another gay guy a slut or a whore or something. What can they say then? - EdgarVerona, on 12/22/2008, -2/+33Apparently Spartans aren't known for their coherency.
- williambeutler, on 12/22/2008, -3/+33I think the translation is:
"Yes, and so is the whole Internet. And the radical feminist agenda, coterminous with the left, is to blame."
I follow that, but I don't agree with it. - inactive, on 12/22/2008, -9/+39Is the majority not collectively empathetic to the minority?
- dafragsta, on 12/22/2008, -5/+32Whoever wrote this article is a moron. Digg comments are DRIPPING with satire. Is it supposed to be conveniently not dripping with satire when someone asks a ridiculously loaded PC propaganda question like this? I think all those comments prove is that Digg is irreverent toward political correctness for the sake of irreverence and humor. Don't be a bunch of ***** and speak knowingly about a community that you clearly know nothing about.
It's Kevin Rose's fault for apologizing after threatening to come some chicks ***** off with scissors. - CrimsonFlash, on 12/22/2008, -3/+30Digg's so hot that it's making me sexist.
- bsletten, on 12/22/2008, -4/+27I am sure that many will claim that Digg is a reflection of society. While I think that is probably true on some level, it definitely skews toward a subculture that is empowered with a voice not tempered by maturity. Lee Gomes predicted this when he said, "While modern technology has given people powerful new communication tools, it apparently can do nothing to alter the fact that many people have nothing useful to say." My guess is that the attitudes in question reflect a larger frustration, dissociation and lack of experience with women. What used to be confined to the locker room is now splayed on public channels of discourse. When it is cheap to respond, you assume that responses are cheap: gags, quips, juvenile, puerile commentary, but ultimately harmless. I think you will find thoughtful, mature members of both genders here, but I shiver in dread at what is going to be the response.
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+23Living in your mom's basement does not imply that you are a male. Stop being sexist.
- tostrye, on 12/22/2008, -13/+36A plane is on fireand is going to crash. One of the women passengers takes her clothes off and says "What man will make me feel like a natural woman?" So a man stands up, takes his shirt off and says "Here, wash this."
- maz2331, on 12/22/2008, -9/+29Or maybe Digg users are just not radical feminists. There is a difference between being absolutely for equality without buying all the political ***** of any subgroup.
- sexybobo, on 12/22/2008, -4/+24***** OR GTFO
Oops for give my misspelling I mean you have a great point about people doing it for the lulz. As some one described it best digg is like a bunch of people sitting around at a bar every one trying to make the other people laugh and some times have serious discussion the language isn't going to be subtle and people really don't intend to offend people but if you saw a bunch of people telling a joke at a bar you would laugh about it and go on just because this site has news every one has different expectations of the same group of people.
No one means what they say. - bluto36, on 12/22/2008, -3/+23""In writing about the offensive comments, however, she got the attention of Digg's founder, Kevin Rose,"
only because she was a girl - zacharytelschow, on 12/22/2008, -3/+23Some of the best advice I've ever received is if you want to be something - a great athlete, an excellent student, a top notch employee - the fastest way to get there is to take on the habits of what you'd like to become. Those that are truly gender and race blind don't go around talking about it 24/7. The biggest racists and sexists are those who are constantly making arguments on the basis of race/gender instead of actual merit.
- Cerialthriller, on 12/22/2008, -18/+36I use the internet as time where i can be an ***** and my girlfriend wont smack me because shes a woman and thus not on the internet. Thats kind of what comment systems are for as we can all see, a way to anonymously be douche bags with no real world repercussions.
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -2/+20Indeed.
Guy punches girl: Domestic abuse!
Girl punches guy: Aww, how cute it is how he pretends it hurts. - carbonfilament, on 12/22/2008, -1/+17I think you're getting dugg for mentioning vagina. Just saying.
- gllopc, on 12/22/2008, -0/+15I miss the three of you.
- GoKings, on 12/22/2008, -5/+20lmao @ at the holier than thou Diggers on here now trying to call everyone sexist pigs, and how they so much more civilized. Look, the reason it's so popular to make a sexist or racist joke on the internet is because there is no fear of repercussion for saying a joke that someone might take offense to and get you fired or something. Everyone is so stuck up and politically correct these days. People are afraid to say anything in fear that someone might sue them. Quit whining, laugh it off, have some good comeback, and carry on.
- Cerialthriller, on 12/22/2008, -4/+18most girls i know use the internet for shopping and Perez Hilton
- EdgarVerona, on 12/22/2008, -0/+14Aye, that's what it boils down to. The most vocal people on Digg (hell, anywhere on the internet) tend to be the people with the most marginal/questionable opinions.
I've seen white supremacists here on Digg, for example. They're hardly the majority, one would hope... but they're here, because it's a place for them to voice their wacko beliefs. When people are allowed to post online semi-anonymously, the real wierdos are the ones who tend to float to the top. So you'll always get some strong sexist opinions here. Or anywhere on the internet. You'll also get racist opinions, nihilists, socialists, monarchists, people who hate X people for Y stupid reasons, etc... I'd like to think that it's more of a consequence of perceived anonymity by a minority rather than the actual opinion of the majority. - subliminalurge, on 12/22/2008, -2/+16"digg elites"
What a meaningless term. - cavefish01, on 12/22/2008, -4/+18The next great rights movement... Women's Right to Digg...Followed by fem-anons rights to 4chan
- WhiteMike87, on 12/22/2008, -0/+14we all love that thing she does!
- charm803, on 12/22/2008, -3/+16As a girl, sometimes other diggers call me a "he" or tell me I live in my mom's basement because they assume I'm a dude.
But I don't think it's sexist.
I enjoy digg and the digg culture, from bacon to Rick Rolls to the debate on Atheism and religion, but the articles I digg are mostly politics and design.
I think digg gest rid of all the crap and I enjoy because it's NOT girly.
Bring it on. - inactive, on 12/22/2008, -7/+20Step outside the insulated feminist box and hear me out for a minute (I'll let the Reagan comment slide for now- btw what the hell are you talking about?). Women bitch incessantly that chivalry is dead, men are ***** that just want to use them for sex- yada yada yada... Well I say where did the trouble begin? Men rarely open doors anymore, rarely do they court women--- it's no wonder you have such vile sexist comments on the internet- the level of respect of past generations is gone. Men and women are very different- the push to be equal on all fronts, including sexuality- HAS backfired- and the sexism that prevails on the internet is the proof... If you're just as strong as man- why can't you deal with comments relating a vagina to a remote control? Let me know if you get where I'm going with this- I have agonized about the plight of society for quite sometime- I am a reformed feminist (because it is not the answer), and I think women need to rethink the whole transfer of gender roles, because therein the problem lies,

- ncc74656m, on 12/22/2008, -0/+13This is so overwhelmingly logical, clearly it evaded the OP who was looking to score a big hit against the "boys club" more than have an honest and open discussion. I think that an inate failure to "get the joke" is more at fault here than the jokes or jokers themselves.
