- Hetman, on 11/11/2009, -11/+27Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious.
Oscar Wilde
Emma Goldman:
Patriotism ... is a superstition artificially created and maintained through a network of lies and falsehoods; a superstition that robs man of his self-respect and dignity, and increases his arrogance and conceit.
George Jean Nathan:
Patriotism is a arbitrary veneration of real estate above principles.
George Bernard Shaw:
Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it. - AgeofMastery, on 11/11/2009, -10/+16Oh look, Timothy McVeigh's best buddy has a new terrorist group.
- Hetman, on 11/11/2009, -4/+10Yes I have a problem with Jingoism.
- IgorUnchained, on 11/11/2009, -7/+12While America has more "private contractors" overseas than they have soldiers, it is funny to see the "above it all" tweens on Digg putting down people who REALLY DO protect and defend their immediate communities. I know....I know...without our troops in the middle east we would all be speaking Arabic/Farsi right now (wink wink), but we are sometimes just in need of a generator or some people to fill sand bags during a flood. That, and knowing how to use a firearm to protect your family, are the root reasons for having "a militia".
Quit believing the news when they tell you that these are all people named "Cooter" and "Bubba" playing dress up with their guns in the forest. They arent all anti-government (any more than Digg is) and they arent all racist.
The militias are an important part of many chapters of American history. From Washington to Jackson and up to the "community organizers" you see today. Respect the history and recognize the applications for the times we live in....or just worship the government sanctioned wars overseas and make your yellow ribbon tithes while "the few good men/heroes/best and brightest" arent around when your house is under water or your town is on fire.
In my small community, we would be lost without our volunteer ambulance crew and our volunteer fire department. We dont worry so much about their political leanings or what they do on the weekends when they are risking their lives to save our families and our properties. - spartan777, on 11/11/2009, -2/+7I don't know if this Alaskan Militia has anything to do with terrorism, but most terrorist groups in the US aren't Muslim.

We just had the murder of Dr. Tiller, which was a textbook example of terrorism, and it was done by a right-wing-Christian. - PhilMoskowitz, on 11/11/2009, -1/+6Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel
- seltaeb4, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4Stephen Colbert would approve.
- AubreyMaturin, on 11/11/2009, -8/+12No, real patriots use the ballot box.
Terrorists uses guns. - Propethic, on 11/11/2009, -5/+9"REALLY DO protect and defend their immediate communities" yeah, from bears.
- seltaeb4, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3http://www.jesuscampthemovie.com/
- mikeymondavi, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Right, because the ballot box worked so well with England..
- spartan777, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2The stoppage of giving condoms to the poor in Africa will lead to far more deaths from Aids and other STV's than all the terrorist attacks combined. The difference is that terrorist attacks show up on all the news outlets, and are covered 24/7, whereas the AIDS epidemic in Africa and elsewhere don't come close to the radar, even though far more people die in it.
There are other examples in which policies based on Pentecostal/fundamentalist Christian morality have killed and will end up killing far more people than 9/11, or anything likely to follow it. Of course, Fundamentalist Christians don't think they are doing anything wrong or immoral, but many other groups thought they were doing God's work whilst millions suffered and died in their hands. - AgeofMastery, on 11/11/2009, -4/+6Figures a "patriot" like you would be defending somebody who helped McVeigh to kill hundreds of Americans
- hasahugedig, on 11/11/2009, -8/+10real patriots stand up against the government when it's in the wrong.
- ParticleMan420, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2no just people that dont take kindly to idiotic remarks.
- mikeymondavi, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Christians hate freedom as much as any other religion does. It's only recently that Christians stopping killing people for living under their ideals of morality, however this only came after they figured out that they can have congress install moral laws without having to get the bad press that murdering people usually causes, not to mention takes them out of the realm of enforcement. This isnt to say that Christians are bad people, but whenever you take your personal moral beliefs and enforce them on a population as a whole to realize your dream of a moral society, this creates hellish tyranny. Those types of people should be opposed every where theyre found.
- seltaeb4, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3We in America have far more to fear from Pentecostal Christians than we do Muslims.
- ParticleMan420, on 11/11/2009, -3/+5thats all fine and dandy, but these guys that the article is about, are not those people.
- Propethic, on 11/11/2009, -3/+4Trying to rise up against the government because you think they're "wrong" is a pretty sure fire way to get that. Either way I don't see what they could be angry about since they get paid to live in alaska, they probably just have nothing better to do other than smoke weed and play with guns in the wilderness
- AgeofMastery, on 11/11/2009, -3/+4And imposing your vision of "freedom" at gunpoint is so much better...
- aurorous, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3Well the flash point of the militia movement was an unarmed woman wanted for no crime being gunned down by federal agents and the federal agents in question completely got away with it. And the man who gave the order was rewarded with a promotion.
If a ax murderer is coming after you, call the police and the system will protect you... If a cop is coming after you just lay down in die because the system wants you dead. True 20 years ago and still true today - codyman, on 11/11/2009, -4/+5amurrrricaaaa
- skull24, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3Some has been playing a lot of call of duty modern warfare 2.
- spartan777, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Well, if you take the viewpoint that abortion is somehow murder, and most anti-choice groups do, then there are dozens of parts in the Bible that tells people to stone/crucify/otherwise kill murderers. In fact, you can find about 100 (not exaggerating) verses in the Bible that tells you to kill people for much lesser crimes. There's even a verse that tells parents to kill their children if they misbehave.
"there is nothing in the Bible I can find where it tells Christians to kill abortion doctors"
Then you haven't read the Bible. Both the Bible and Koran have their nice parts, and theie brutal, homicidal, genocidal, parts too. It is our modern, much more civilized society that has successfully pushed those crazy and brutal passages of the Bible out of people's minds. - AubreyMaturin, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3Did you know bears can climb a tree faster than they can run?
- seltaeb4, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2How about Dennis Moore?
- mikeymondavi, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2How about something more recent?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathryn_Johnston_shoo ... - DulcetTone, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2The music wasn't conducive to hearing the narrator. I'm taking up arms against these people for making a bad video. WOLVERINES!!!!!
- hasahugedig, on 11/11/2009, -4/+5looks like some ppl want a police state...
- aurorous, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2Well maybe if they had actually identified themselves as agents instead of just indiscriminately spraying bullets at wanted fugitives (as well as innocent men women and CHILDREN!) things could have turned out differently.
But this event combined with Katheryn Johnston shooting on top of the all the times police just shoot people or taser them even after they're already in custody and restrained and yet never seem to be held responsible no matter how outrageous the behavior why would anyone have trust tolerate or have faith in our government? - Rammat2, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1In what way? I'm really interested to know why.
- Rammat2, on 11/11/2009, -3/+2Of course, there is nothing in the Bible I can find where it tells Christians to kill abortion doctors, yet, in the Quran you are promised what sounds like a slothful brothel in the sky if you kill those who aren't Muslim IF you don't want to believe jihad is all metaphor and 'inner struggle".
- AgeofMastery, on 11/11/2009, -3/+2You mean the wife of a wanted fugitive who was in the house with said husband who was shooting at the agents at the time? Maybe if she wasn't helping a murderer to try and kill more people she wouldn't have gotten shot.
- AubreyMaturin, on 11/11/2009, -10/+8A bunch of hairy dudes hanging out with each other in the middle of the forest, playing with their guns. "Patriotic", is...ahem...NOT the word that comes to mind.
- lolerskate, on 11/11/2009, -10/+7Ah yes the militia a bunch of redneck gun nuts foaming at the mouth that the governement is evil or controlled by the jews, taking all sorts of crazy conspiracies as reality with a hair trigger temper.
Man this is like the 90's all over! - spartan777, on 11/11/2009, -4/+1Hey, didn't the FOXHOUND militia from Metal Gear Solid try an armed uprising from the same exact place? They got their hands on Metal Gear Rex, and threatened to blow up Washington. God help us if the Alaska Militia gets its hands on a nuclear waste disposal site that turns out to be a secret DARPA research compound.
EDIT: I just noticed that the Olson guy looks a lot like Revolver Ocelot. - lurrch1, on 11/11/2009, -4/+1Must be a lot of herb haters on digg tonight.
- Rammat2, on 11/11/2009, -9/+5Whew!!! FINALLY, a possible terrorist group who ISN'T Muslim for a change!!!
- Aquileria, on 11/11/2009, -10/+4I don't have any idea who the third guy is, but all the folks you quoted besides were famous expat/leftist types so it really isn't surprising that they would feel that way about patriotism!
I mean, come on dude, I could probably find equally valuable writers in the canon like Hobbes or Thomas Moore or something who have nothing but wonderful things to say about patriotism. Hell, some of the best writers in our history believed in divine absolutism. - inactive, on 11/11/2009, -13/+4American exceptionalism is just a nightmare for you, eh Sparky?
- lurrch1, on 11/11/2009, -13/+4Their Pro-marijuana so I can't hate them.
- storstygg, on 11/10/2009, -14/+4They seemed smart until all the CIA conspiracy craziness.

What is Digg?
