- Twag86, on 02/09/2009, -0/+65Every trick has three parts, the pledge, the turn, and the prestige...
- glennkachmar, on 02/08/2009, -0/+46Life imitates Arrested Development!
- cryonix, on 02/09/2009, -0/+40Yeah but his dad could tell it was your dad by the latent fingerprints left behind, and whoop his as in court.
- doom777, on 02/08/2009, -1/+40I think the have different fingerprints
- ncapone, on 02/09/2009, -2/+41I bet my dad could beat up your dad!
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -0/+39This is a very rare case. I think both of them are trafficking cannabis and opium for a long time. And the switching is just an escape plan.
- PhantomPhoenix, on 02/09/2009, -3/+41No, they have different fingerprints because fingerprints are not influenced by genetics.
My dad is a latent fingerprint expert for a Department of Defense contractor. - AquaOSX, on 02/09/2009, -0/+38It's easy to tell them apart. The evil twin is the one with goatee and or eye patch. Everyone knows that. It's science.
- AmyVernon, on 02/08/2009, -2/+39Curious - do identical twins have identical fingerprints, too? I didn't realize there was no actual genetic way to tell them apart.
- godsparadox, on 02/08/2009, -0/+27This makes me wish I had an identical twin, if they actually did plan it that's pretty ***** brilliant.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -4/+28Well, this story, coming from a country that kills people involved in drug traffic, I have to say they are lucky not to be both hanged.
They had identical DNA (I didn't know that was possible), and that being the case, well... either they are very lucky or very smart.
Dugg for super cool story. - WayGroovy, on 02/09/2009, -0/+24The ultimate shape of fingerprints are believed to be influenced by environmental factors during pregnancy, like nutrition, blood pressure, position in the womb and the growth rate of the fingers at the end of the first trimester. Thus, you will find similar patterns of whorls and ridges in the fingerprints of identical twins. But there will also be differences -- just as there are differences between the fingers on any individual's hands.

- painting, on 02/09/2009, -3/+24so you thought it was just a coincidence that identical twins look exactly alike?
- mmittimm, on 02/09/2009, -0/+17We're quadruplets, you've got the wrong two!
- painting, on 02/09/2009, -0/+13if they confess they still die. Great plan idiot.
- Nerys, on 02/08/2009, -1/+9Actually they SHOULD have different finger prints. identical twins usually have different prints and different dna if you test it to enough resolution
the problem is this is not relevant. unless they TOOK prints or dna BEFORE the second brother was arrested they still have the same problem. WHICH one did they arrest first :-) hehe - Akraz, on 02/09/2009, -1/+9Yeah because obtaining an illegal substance is worth losing your life over.. *eyeroll* we have it so good here in North America. Its sickening hearing about the laws of foreign countries.
You END someone's LIFE because they have DRUGS? REALLY?
What the ***** goes through people's minds, I will never understand. - dofe, on 02/09/2009, -0/+7Maybe because other countries and cultures place different priorities on things? I don't think drug possession should be punished by a death sentence, but I can understand why countries like Malaysia would have such strict punishments when you consider the tragic effects that drugs have had in the history in that region of the world. Read up on the opium wars -- the drug single handedly brought down the Qin dynasty and left China in a humiliated state for decades. The legacy of this embarrassment in Chinese history remains in the form of strict drug laws in most Asian countries to this day.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_Wars - spookyttws, on 02/09/2009, -1/+8You get the death penalty for trafficking drugs? And I thought our drug laws were broken.
- MofugginPaulrus, on 02/09/2009, -0/+6No, people who want to blindly murder, like you, are the true problem.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -0/+5*cue Benny Hill theme*
- sarahes, on 02/09/2009, -0/+5Southeast Asia doesnt mess around with their drug policies. Get caught with a bag in Singapore- you get the rope.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -0/+4"Ev'ry magic trick 'as tree parts, or acks."
There, fixed it for you. - inactive, on 02/09/2009, -0/+4I believe it happens because the fluid in the womb flows around. You get little eddies and stuff. I think this is why your hair spirals around too.
I wonder if this means autrailians spiral the other way? - Zarchon, on 02/09/2009, -1/+5OR You RISK your LIFE just because you want DRUGS? Seems stupid to me.
- AnthoMacP, on 02/09/2009, -0/+4Fingerprints are caused in the womb when skin contracts around our fingers, it folds to form these ridges at random so even identical twins won't have the same fingerprints.
- tidu, on 02/09/2009, -0/+4no comments on the thumbnail?
- sarahes, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3Then you would have to boycott almost every country in asia... I'm typing this in a Malaysian hotel, I would rather not buy drugs and enjoy one of the most beautiful places in the world.
- spriggig, on 02/09/2009, -2/+5Came in to bury the "Hang them both" comment I knew I'd find. Diggers didn't disappoint.
- TheThirdLevel, on 02/09/2009, -4/+7Moronic idea. Legalizing heroin and crack isn't really going to help.
- MWeather, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3Did the prosecution present any fingerprints as evidence? If not, then who cares?
- Danby123, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3This reminds me of Arrested Development.

- Federbeast, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2I'd like to see a cat that could judge.
- naugrim, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2This reminded me of the Magnetic Fields song: "I wish I had an evil twin".
- AmyVernon, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2I TOTALLY forgot about that.
- wild, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2I remember this episode of Matlock...
- LifeNova, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Quick, ask them a question only the real evil twin would know!!
- MaxD, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Wow, you say that like you only just realised that this was going on... Somebody has led a sheltered life.
- analogkid01, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2"How much would your brother charge me for a nickel bag?"
- nullcodes, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Lucky for the guilty twin, whole genome sequencing is not possible (cheaply). The DNA testing they did was very limited. If they take a few cells from each twin and sequence them in entirety and also sequence a sample known to be from the perpetrator you can very probably determine which twin the sample came from. Reason being that as Metasquares points out replication is not error free and every time a cell divides there is error introduced. So each twin's cells will have errors that occurred after the cells split in the embryo .. and so if you sequence the sample's DNA in its entirety you will find it has the unique errors that occurred just after the twins' embryo split into two.
No two cells have exactly the same genome sequence, and since the error rate is extremely low in comparison with the size of the genome .. cells that are taken from an adult will still have imprints of the genome errors that occurred way early in replicating in the embryo stage.
So the twin may think he got away scot free until cheap whole genome sequencing comes along. I hope there's a statute of limitations or something cause hanging's too harsh a punishment. - chasew70, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2freeoscar.com
- gatordw, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Don't several US states provide for capital punishment for huge quantities of drug trafficking?
- AriaStar, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Identical twins are from the same egg that splits in two. How would the DNA be different?
- anotherjack, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2I think I know these guys! Can his brother hold the sea in his mouth?
