- LewP, on 03/26/2008, -9/+18Very good stuff right there.
- artliquide, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1It's common sense that needs to be spoken every day.
- cainmi, on 03/26/2008, -2/+0yeah true, but it does remind me a little of Jim Cunningham (Donnie Darko)....but anyhoo...
- jboitnott, on 03/26/2008, -2/+4interesting. I think people walk around carrying illusions that run their lives. They are governed by them. Not saying I don't. Very difficult not to. I think the key thing is just being like Yoda and meditating in a quiet, healthy place on a semi-regular basis for small portions of time. That might breed thoughtfulness and mindfulness. But what the heck to I know?
- jaxcs, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3The sentiment expressed here is fine. It's just a bit simplistic. Most people would intuitively agree that lying to yourself is harmful, but it's recognizing when you are lying to yourself that is hard. Most successful people encounter difficulties at some point in their lives, but they were able to succeed though alchemy composed of equal parts perseverance, skill and luck. The hard part consists of being able to recognize when you are not trying hard enough (and therefore need to try harder) and when to give up. Part of Zen teaching is not to resist, to go with the flow to reach tranquility. This isn't a lazy man's philosophy, this isn't about letting the world pass you by, it's about learning limitations. How do you know when your limitations have been reached? The traditional answer is simply that the Zen master knows. Well., the zen master may know, but regular joes haven't a clue. So, regular joes bash their heads against a wall until either the wall gives or their heads. The lucky ones figure a way around the wall or have exceedingly hard heads, the rest of us end up with head aches.

- skyz, on 03/26/2008, -11/+5if you are going to do video get a voice coach - no one is going to embrace anyone with such an annoying voice - and as for the content of said video - true lying to yourself is certain failure in any and all things but guess what there will be a new digg and there will be a new facebook - get over it or get into it -
- animalbmx, on 03/26/2008, -3/+0You do know that he hosts The Thunder Show, aka the internetz most passionate wine program, right? He has a cult like following.
- ozydingo, on 03/26/2008, -2/+3I don't believe he ever said there wouldn't be.
(And a bad voice in a video is akin to bad sentence structure in a comment)
- animalbmx, on 03/26/2008, -3/+0You do know that he hosts The Thunder Show, aka the internetz most passionate wine program, right? He has a cult like following.
- shrontzy, on 03/26/2008, -4/+21Although his message is true he had somewhat an annoying voice. Reminded me of Woody Allen.
- garyv, on 03/26/2008, -6/+6Shrontzy I have been mad at my parents for that voice for years ;)LOL JK, understood dude I'll go work on it :) thnx for the honesty!
- jakash, on 03/26/2008, -12/+4Heres a similar insirational video... changed my life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU

- danielsamuels, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3You fell for uuiU?
- Spudster, on 03/26/2008, -3/+1I actually fell for this one. DAMMIT.
- iamcristian, on 03/26/2008, -9/+8This guy is such a douchebag. Look at how full of himself he is! I wrote a negative comment on his page and what do you know: It was deleted by a moderator (probably him). Who the hell does this guy this he is? He obviously likes to think he's famous enough to speak into a camera anywhere he is.
Argh. I feel like I was attacked. Horrible video.- garyv, on 03/26/2008, -5/+11Hey Christian u are SOOOO RIGHT, I did delete cause u had FU in the return email, I though it was spam, I approved your next one just like I approve all the wine DOUCHEBAGS that rag on me on my wine site cause we are talking real :) Bottom line dude I understand my style isnt for you but I hope we cross paths and u let me buy u a glass of wine or beer or whatever and u get to know me, I promise it will be harder to hate on me! MY moms just did a great job I take no credit dude!
- Krusz, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2It's a shame that replies are not automatically shown by default because most people will miss Gary's (very funny) reply.
- iamcristian, on 04/07/2008, -0/+0You have to be someone to pull off speaking in to a camera the way you do in the location you were at and I think you hardly pull that off. In fact, you make yourself look like a real dip *****. Also, It won't be hard to "hate" on you. You're a creep, as you've seen others on here say. There's something about the way you talk. Your words pop too hard or your mouth opens too wide, or maybe it's that your face is too close to the camera. Maybe it's that you're at some random outdoor location which degrades the quality of the message. Either way, thanks for replying but you're still an asshat.
- exidor, on 03/26/2008, -4/+2Gary may not be a household name, but he's "famous enough to speak into a camera" as you put it. "This guy" has been putting out a daily video podcast for a couple of years now that gets tens of thousands of views. Besides being Internet Famous, he's been on TV (Conan, Ellen, Nightline) and has a very successful wine retail business. He also somehow finds the time to be everywhere at once: from SXSW to France to wine tastings in Sonoma with Kevin Rose and Robert Scoble to "everyone join me for lunch in Chinatown", the man gets around. His schedule would probably kill a normal person, and he makes it look easy. Gary is friendly, kind, generous, outgoing, liked by just about everyone. His only real flaw is that his typing style resembles a 12-year-old girl text messaging, but it's easy to overlook that because, hey, he's Gary Vay-ner-chuk.
(Says someone who's never consumed alcohol, doesn't watch WLTV, and has only met GV briefly -- he makes an impression AND leaves an impact.)- yojiffyskippy, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I saw his Conan appearance. All I remember about the episode is him and Conan eating dirt and cigars. Very odd.
- sfrench, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1So right. I just met and talked with him recently, and while I'm not a huge wine fan, I've got nothing but respect for a guy that loves what he does, is entertaining about it, and is nice to everybody that crosses his path.
- JulyZerg, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1So you go out, post a flaming response, and say "Argh I was attacked!"
I'm hoping that is not an accurate depiction of your personality...
- garyv, on 03/26/2008, -5/+11Hey Christian u are SOOOO RIGHT, I did delete cause u had FU in the return email, I though it was spam, I approved your next one just like I approve all the wine DOUCHEBAGS that rag on me on my wine site cause we are talking real :) Bottom line dude I understand my style isnt for you but I hope we cross paths and u let me buy u a glass of wine or beer or whatever and u get to know me, I promise it will be harder to hate on me! - mwomorris, on 03/26/2008, -2/+7Ow my senses.
- ivankraszl, on 03/26/2008, -4/+25Who is this weird guy. He's looking out like being afraid of cops.. :) And, why do a video crouching in front of a kindergarden? What am I missing?
- raynar, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8He kids...wanna come to my car and help me find my puppy? I have candy...
- yojiffyskippy, on 03/26/2008, -3/+1"He kids" or "Hey kids"? It's funny how a single letter can drastically change the meaning of a sentence.
- theodenking, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2Yes, one makes sense and the other doesn't.
- yojiffyskippy, on 03/26/2008, -3/+1"He kids" or "Hey kids"? It's funny how a single letter can drastically change the meaning of a sentence.
- raynar, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8He kids...wanna come to my car and help me find my puppy? I have candy...
- Raian, on 03/26/2008, -2/+3Jason Calacanis.... is that you?
- garyv, on 03/26/2008, -3/+3hahahha that hurt;)
- kevlarbaboon, on 03/26/2008, -4/+15This was ***** stupid. Stop lying to yourself.
- FloorModel, on 03/26/2008, -8/+19*ding* his five minutes of fame are up and none too soon
- garyv, on 03/26/2008, -10/+5u think? lets meet up and I bet you wont :)!
- positron, on 03/26/2008, -3/+6Internet tough guy has spoken!
- garyv, on 03/26/2008, -10/+5u think? lets meet up and I bet you wont :)!
- Spudster, on 03/26/2008, -5/+9I find the guy a bit over cocky. But he has a pretty good point--you aren't the only one out there who is trying to succeed in the environment of social media. Stop lying to yourself and believing that you're imagined self worth will pull you higher than others in the very competitive arena that is Web 2.0.
On an unrelated note: In a way, I can't help but feel we're ready for another collapse similar to the dot com boom as people realize there ISN'T all that much money in social media after all.- garyv, on 03/26/2008, -2/+7Spudster I am just excited I am sorry it came of cocky, hope we meet and chat and u will see that is not the case. Stay well my dude!
- raynar, on 03/26/2008, -3/+13His next video should be "So you wanna be the next digg? Then you have to do the Digg Combo. It works like this:
*find a site you like (slashdot in diggs case)
*add a few javascript tweaks and a little ranking algorithm
*plug it on someone elses talk show for free
*drink beers on a video podcast with your friend to show everyone you're 'hip' and hetero
*rock out- theodenking, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2I dugg you up, but I don't think you'll survive much longer.
Wait, I think I hear the diggnation fanboys now...- raynar, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1not scared. everyone knows I'm right.
- theodenking, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2I dugg you up, but I don't think you'll survive much longer.
- robfitzonbass, on 03/26/2008, -6/+10Cocaine's a hell of a drug!
- raynar, on 03/26/2008, -2/+2i hate the taste, but love the smell.
- gameradam, on 03/26/2008, -7/+5Great advice, Garry is gaining wisdom each day and sharing it with the world.
- leek, on 03/26/2008, -4/+6that noise when he first opens his mouth.... that noise.
- tobleronejones, on 03/26/2008, -4/+10I want to be the next Gary Vaynerchuk!
- purplehaze420, on 03/26/2008, -6/+5Thank you Gary Vaynerchuk. Sometimes the best advice is things we already know deep down inside, but just have to be reminded of that. Excellent submission.
- kitta, on 03/26/2008, -6/+4He makes some great points.
All hail Gary V! - Nuhaus, on 03/26/2008, -6/+14Voice coach: slow down. Learn to breathe. Don't be all hunched over the camera. Stop repeating the one phrase. Enunciate without chewing up your words.
And get the hell away from my kid's school. - carnag3aus, on 03/26/2008, -7/+11Who the ***** does this guy think he is... he doesn't sound too great if you ask me.
- haveacigar, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1He used to do a wine podcast....
- shadow5, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0Since Feb 2006 he has posted over 428 episodes on tv.winelibrary.com.
- raynar, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1anyone can podcast.
- haveacigar, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1He used to do a wine podcast....
- skyz, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3if the millions of people involved in social media did something other than just hang out and digg or diss each other much greater things than digg or facebook could / would be accomplished
- robbiemuffin, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1that's what the internet was back in 2000
- raynar, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1we're too busy going outside.
- sadGuru, on 03/26/2008, -2/+6This guy has a podcast about wine tasting, and now getting into different inspirational podcasts. Good video, but people that try to become famous by getting involved into everything online, are repulsive for me. Be what you are. Dont be a generalist on every subject out there.
- robbiemuffin, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8the intersection of two completely unrelated ideas is often good entertainment, and inspiration.. but rarely good for much else.
stop lying to yourself Gary, you're not part of the tech world.. you're a part of the entertainment business. :) - positron, on 03/26/2008, -3/+5Gotta love that sound you hear when people shoot themselves in the foot. *Douche!*
- antroar, on 03/26/2008, -5/+1B 2ru 2 U. Yeah baby!! Just like the GURU says, Gee You Are You ....
- yellowsnowcone, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7someone call the police ... there is a pedo hanging out by the playground
- taketheleap, on 03/26/2008, -3/+16buried for creepin me the ***** out.
- kmb1794, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Very creepy...but also I didn't expect that voice!
- zimbra, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6What a dick.
- jholden42, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Wrong. Evolutionary psychology suggests strongly that lying to yourself is a very good way to make others believe you - the more YOU believe your *****, the likelier it is that you'll be able to convince others of it as well.
- WhatsUpWithJack, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5He's just regurgitating all the advice he's received after trying singlehandedly to be "the next big thing." FAIL.
- Greenergrass, on 03/26/2008, -4/+1He is a passionate! I love that, wow! I have this constantly in mind but it is a fight every day!
- oldcyborg, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1I agree, but if someone can be that objective and that focused, They Could be the next great one.
I guess it would be better to start small and work your way up to being totally up front with yourself.
But the premise is Good!!
Cyborg - MikeonTV, on 03/26/2008, -2/+1I actually am Lebron James
- allfatherblack, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1*slow, jerking motion regarding the videos content*
Side note: Commentable pictures; epic fail. Commentable video like this one; epic success.
