- spookyttws, on 05/23/2009, -0/+9Besides the obvious facts that the paper magazine is as good as dead, porn is free, and Hefner is long past his actual "playboy" days, the whole thing is pretty depressing. I'm 23 and my Dad paid me in his stack of late 70's-80's Playboys in exchange for cleaning out the Garage when I was 12 (my mom was not in on this exchange). This was around the time the internet porn world came to life, so I have great memories of both. The actual Playboy Brand may be worth a great some of money, maybe $150 mil, but someone needs to take the brand in a new direction, it feels like it's stuck in 1999. I get that they want to keep it classy, and it genuinely (is trying) to include good journalism, but they really need to shift away from the actual paper magazine.

The bunny, and Playboy as a cultural icon that can be marketed, have to be a lot more valuable that the publication. Yes, I know the company is far from erect right now, but think of all the by-products, all those bunny-clad thongs and matching cupless bras... the TV show, the calendars, exercise DVDs and homekeeping books that Heffner's "wives" put their pictures on... I don't think Playboy has functioned on "the magazine model" for quite some time.
