If this seems unbelievable to you, then you are one of the lucky people who had a normal, loving upbringing. Sadly, for me and my siblings, homelife was just like that video shows; controlled through intimidation, emotionally and verbally abusive with the occassional act of physical violence to keep everyone "in line". I cannot remember how many "family meetings" I experienced that were just like that video. Everything shown in that video made perfect sense to me, I am saddened to admit.

        In that video, the woman was paralyzed into a non-emotional state because any reaction would have been the wrong reaction; the trigger that could have escalated the violence. As it was, she still ended up getting beaten. My god, when people say something like you said in your comment, it really, really upsets me because, really, how would you know?

    I saw this episode on TV. It was some of the grossest ***** i have ever seen. To think that there are men that dont see how beautiful women are and treat them like nothing, it's absurd.
    This woman's lawyer said she was lucky that her husband made their son video tape it, otherwise, the husband might have gotten away with it. Also, her boss had made a log of times she went to work crying or clearly abused. The combination of the two, put this ***** behind bars for a long time.

            I stood up to my father when I was 13. Once my mother saw that she realized just how bad the situation was. It was a wake up call for her and they were divorced shortly afterward. Did I get my ass beat? Yes, I did. Severely. But I stood up for what I thought I needed to stand up for.

            And as a side-note, I became my father for a while. I was filled up with so much anger and hatred and pain and I finally exploded. Fortunately for me my girlfriend knows who I am and she stood by me and I found help in the form of therapy and anger management.

            Children of abuse often end up abusers unless they get some serious help with their issues. Unfortunately, for many of us it takes a situation like mine before we realize how angry we really are and how ***** up the abuse left us before we are willing to get help.

You're raised to fear your parents to some degree (aka not talk back - interefere with adult business etc). I will say that - that is the only time in my life that my brother was actaully worth something. He did what she said the 19 year old daughter did, he tried to keep me from seeing it. After my parents divorced a few years later - My brother became the biggest *****, he purposefully picked fights with anyone and everyone. His end result: He married - had two kids - became a cheat - divorced - turned to drugs and is now in prison at 41 years old. Where are neither one of us has had the 'abusive' past that my father has, there definitely was/is some anger issues to contend with. Children are unique in how they may cope with things. I think god (that's right I said god on digg) that he allowed me to avoid some of the things that others might not. As for my father, believe it or not, he and my mother still speak (not married) on a regular basis. My father has been married 3 times, only the first was abusive. His problem, I believe he was way to young to be married and hadn't a clue of how to cope. Justified? no, but those are the facts, and part of those has led me to ensure that I will never let those same circumstances befall me if it is within my power. So coward? no, the child is going to have to be brave for the rest of his life to contend with what's in his past.

Often it takes many more years for abuse victims to regain composure and begin their lives again. It serves as a glaring reminder of the abuse victim: they can be anyone. Beautiful or not, intelligent or not, abuse is not limited to one specific demographic. Also, I wonder what happened to her children; are they still abusive to her or are they forgiving?

It gives them hope, gives their support system something they can use, and gives their abusers something to think about. But the scariest part is that lots of women try to get out and don't. The court system rarely has evidence like this, it's tough to get your kids safe and get away, and the abusers have a lot to lose, so they fight with violence or lawyers to keep the abused from getting out.

    • adrianmonk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3In my experience from observing people who are abusive (although not as abusive as this guy), it's usually people who have grown up in screwed-up environments and have developed an anti-social attitude towards others. They behave as if having a real, meaningful connection to other human beings is not really possible, either because they believe others can't be trusted or for some other reason. Once you have that as a starting point, it becomes easier to intimidate and manipulate people into doing what you want. A normal person wouldn't treat another person like this for fear of damaging the relationship, but because the abusive person doesn't see a real relationship as really possible, they don't have that factor preventing them from behaving that way, and other issues they have take over. For example, if they have control issues, those take over. Or whatever kinds of issues they have.

      In order to make any progress, you pretty much have to end the relationship with the abusive person. This is sad because usually there is some legitimate positive aspect of the relationship separate from the abusive aspect. And it's sad for the abusive person because they're already really alone and having trouble connecting with other human beings. I think in abusive families, one of the reasons women take so long to leave is that they see this: they know that their husband who is abusing them is doing it because they're messed up, and they don't want the husband that they love to have to feel rejected and be alone, all the more so because they know how hard it is for the abusive person to be connected to anyone. But the reality of the situation is that if you stay, you are just making things worse. It's better for the abusive person to lose their family and be forced to change. They may or may not really change, but if you leave them, at least they have a chance of experiencing a wake-up call and changing, and maybe at some point in the future they'll be able to have a healthy relationship. I think it takes abused women a long time to see that this is really the only way to go; they keep hoping it can get better without breaking the family up (as the woman in the video said).

The narrator said there was one point during the tape when the man was beating his wife that the son pointed the camera away from the violence and pointed it at his shoes instead. That means the kid was experiencing trauma, but it also means on some level he knows the score, and he probably just needs to sort out the issues relating to being in a situation where he was more or less forced into being turned against his mother.

See how the stereotype is always that domestic violence *has* to be male on female? Check out some stats : http://www.dvstats.com/ - women are just as likely to be perpetrators of domestic violence as men. No violence is acceptable, and we should stop stereotyping who the perpetrators are - this just gives a pass to the non-stereotypical abuser ("surely SHE'D never abuse her kids/husband?" - "But HE'S so smart and has a good job, no way he'd hit his kids/wife"). Stereotypes do no good whatsoever.
