- HALNINETHOUSAND, on 05/29/2009, -0/+108This is ridiculous. But to be fair, they cite the letter but then everyone else in the story says "this is stupid," including the other homeowners' association members, so I'm guessing this is one idiot sending letters and will be shut down quickly.
- DrDash, on 05/29/2009, -0/+78Most homeowner association are run by little old busy bodies that have nothing better to do. I really think there should be ways to get rid of them, the idea is good but if you get a board that wants to RULE all, it goes down hill fast.
- Lucas123, on 05/29/2009, -1/+62Obviously the members of this home owners' association have far too much time on their hands. It's one thing telling a person not to paint their house purple with polka dots or to cut your grass once it reaches knee-hieight, but it's another thing entirely sticking your nose in on the topic of bumper stickers. These people need to get a life.
And, are you kidding me. These are condos. I think it's time to vote out the members of that home owners' association. - Vosem, on 05/29/2009, -0/+60One of many reasons I would never buy a home in a HOA neighborhood. If it's MY house, NOBODY has any business telling me what I can and cannot do (outside of illegal activities) on my property.
- Cancerkitty, on 05/29/2009, -4/+59People who don't read things before they sign them.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 05/29/2009, -1/+49The people who run HOAs are usually the same people who took student council way too seriously in high school.
- EnviroChem, on 05/30/2009, -0/+48every neighborhood has some nosy neighbors who don't know how to mind their own business.
- AmyVernon, on 05/29/2009, -6/+48But I somehow doubt the HOA document indicated that having several Marines bumper stickers on your car violated restrictions. They're calling it advertising, but I've never looked at those kinds of bumper stickers as "advertising."
- hblask, on 05/29/2009, -5/+46Who agrees to a homeowners agreement that says you can't put ads on your car? What kind of sheep live there?
- fabkebab, on 05/30/2009, -2/+38HOA are one of the enigmas of living in America -
Why do homeowners subject themselves to something so un-american? - Protonz, on 05/30/2009, -0/+33I don't think you understand what a homeowners association is.
Maybe this will teach people that collections of people that ask for your rights in return for controlling you is not such a good thing. - MargotCross, on 05/29/2009, -1/+33some people are just awful human beings who have nothing better to do with their lives..
- brbeaird, on 05/29/2009, -3/+35FTAL
"FOX 4 cameras spotted bumper stickers for political parties, health causes, and other non-commercial interests on the property as well."
Bumper stickers supporting the armed forces are hardly advertising. It makes me sad to think someone hates the military so much that they would go to the trouble of threatening this guy. - EnviroChem, on 05/30/2009, -4/+35There are some rules home owner's associations should not be allowed to make. This is supposed to be a free country. Oh and the excuse "they could choose to live elsewhere" doesn't wash because when looking to buy a home oftentimes one doesn't truly choose their ideal place to live because they also have to look at what is on the market at the time that meets their needs and price range.
- AmyVernon, on 05/29/2009, -3/+34Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!
- AmyVernon, on 05/29/2009, -0/+27It looks like the president did it on his own; one of the other board members didn't even know about it, supposedly. Having lived in Florida and Arizona for many years - two states with TONS of HOAs, I could believe that.
- RoboRay, on 05/29/2009, -10/+36"but since he chooses to live in a certain community"
There, I fixed that for you. - mikbunn, on 05/29/2009, -4/+30That's the way it should be.
I have a friend who owns a landscaping company, but since he lives in a certain community, he can't park his trailer on his own property and he has to cover up the company decals on the side of his SUV at night. He had to buy an Excursion, rather than a pickup, because the neighborhood rent-a-cops will fine him or even tow the truck due to "community standards."
It's pretty lame. - mrgeekguy, on 05/30/2009, -0/+251. Copy your Homeowners Associations Letterhead
2. Send out Crazy Cease and Desist requests on it
3. ?????
4. Profit!!! - EnviroChem, on 05/30/2009, -3/+25I don't care if he plastered his car in decals, its his F'ing car.
- novenator, on 05/30/2009, -4/+26I'd never be part of any association that would have the likes of me as a member
- wadd, on 05/30/2009, -2/+23The Chevy emblem on the back of his vehicle is more of an advertisement than his bumper stickers. Tell the HOA president to remove the advertisements from HIS car first.
- nepidae, on 05/30/2009, -1/+21What service do Homeowners Associations actually provide besides gossip and douchebaggery?
- EnviroChem, on 05/30/2009, -4/+24Sorry but I have absolutely no respect for HOA restrictions, way too many of them are complete ***** that should be invalidated by local laws.
- inactive, on 05/30/2009, -1/+19A lot of HOAs are thinly veiled covers to exclude minorities from the neighborhood. That's why some people are willing to give up their rights, and pay a fee.
- diemunkiesdie, on 05/30/2009, -0/+15They don't allow pickup trucks in his neighborhood?
- gl77, on 05/30/2009, -0/+15homeowners associations are ***** anyway, they tell you how green your lawn should be and if you start to get ANY brown spots in it, they send one of these letters and then want a reply from you telling you to devise a plan of action in order to "rectify the problem" i will never belong to one because i am vehemently against wasting water on your ***** lawn. perhaps watering it with collected rainwater would be cool, but i am not going to raise my water bill and more importantly waste one of earth's most valuable resources just so i can have a green lawn to make the homeowner's association happy.
- inactive, on 05/30/2009, -0/+15HOA's really need to go away! they serve no real purpose beyond harassing the residents.
Time to digg up the phone number and start calling? - hansolo, on 05/30/2009, -0/+15Anal Hall Monitor -> Bossy Resident Advisor -> ***** Homeowner Association President
- DeadPlasmaCell, on 05/30/2009, -2/+16Except he didn't really violate any agreement.. Even the HOA says it's BS. I'm sure it's just one person in the HOA with nothing better to do but go around looking for things they can try and find fault with. I got a notice once saying I needed to put away my portable basketball goal.. except my "portable" basketball goal is cemented in the ground and has been since 1996
- Eurynom0s, on 05/30/2009, -0/+14Actually, nobody actually owns any land in this country, since the government can take it from you if you stop paying taxes. So basically, your taxes are rent/bribes to stay on your land.
- SpeedStix, on 05/29/2009, -0/+14Sweet, and allow those friggin ad frames around your licence plate when you buy a new car. I hate those so much.
- Smokeydabear, on 05/30/2009, -1/+15Homeowners Association people are sometimes real ***** *****. My grandfather, a birdwatching hobbiest, had a bumper sticker on his car supporting the rare an exotic kirtland's warbler, and he got asked to take it off, because it violated something with the association.
- Kronos6948, on 05/30/2009, -1/+14It's his friggin property, he can do with it whatever he wishes, in accordance with local laws.
- Fragger404, on 05/30/2009, -1/+14JimW311,
Apparently he has lived there FOR 8 YEARS with no complaints or letters. What's changed? Why now? - mlw4428, on 05/30/2009, -0/+13The man is a veteran of all things. He served his country...what did they do? Let him display the goddamn sticker.
- oldhick, on 05/30/2009, -10/+23Yeah that's right. You've been trained well. Obey. Do not think for yourself. Obey. At all times obey.
- wjappe, on 05/29/2009, -0/+12Perhaps they are going to ask the homeowners that they have to have only certain colors of cars or certain makes
- yacks, on 05/30/2009, -0/+11Collecting rainwater is illegal in some places as well.. go figure that one out..
- AmazingSteve, on 05/30/2009, -0/+11Except HOA's are usually run by self-righteous ***** and Soccer Moms that have nothing better to do than decide what you can and cannot do with your own home. God help you if you don't "fit in."
- Axeman2063, on 05/30/2009, -4/+157 is probably a lot to a civilian....to a guy who spent a big part of his life fighting for his country, he just ran out of bumper space...
- tbrad223, on 05/30/2009, -0/+11What the hell? Those unappreciative pricks... He fought for their freedom and this is how they repay him? They should be ashamed.
- Dl1cool, on 05/30/2009, -0/+11Mostly douchebaggery.
- maz2331, on 05/30/2009, -1/+12Let us keep in mind that "unconscionable" contract terms are unenforceable in court.
That said, there is a time and place for everything. This one seems to indicate the Joe Pesci approach. It's amazing how many disputes can be quite amicably resolved with nothing more than a baseball bat and a vice... - Protonz, on 05/30/2009, -0/+10People like to control their neighbors, not realizing you can only be as free as your neighbor.
- skyfyre, on 05/30/2009, -0/+10They're waging all-out war on chain-link fences and planting the wrong flowers in your flower bed.
- Barackalypse, on 05/30/2009, -2/+12Ah, homeowners associations, home to a million petty tyrants who can't quite understand the concept of minding your own damn business. If you ever wonder why we have the Government that we do, attend enough meetings with some of these people and you'll know why, some people can't stand to let you live your own life as you wish.
