- reignbow, on 05/03/2008, -1/+24They started planning in 41/42. I think the reason they took until 44 was twofold:
1. Assassinating Hitler was difficult
2. Just killing him wasn't the goal. By 44, they had a detailed plan how they could use his death to seize actual government power and sue for peace. This required circumventing most of the SS, part of the party apparatus and the military; the plans were pretty solid but absolutely depended on Hitler's death to activate state of emergency regulations.
While I do think that they should have just suicide-bombed the bastard, I can agree that just killing Hitler wouldn't have changed that much in 42 - Himmler would have just taken over. - rolf, on 05/03/2008, -1/+10There were several attempts by different people. The earliest I recall reading about was before the war in 1938, where he held a speech but left earlier than scheduled, a few minutes later a bomb went off near the podium.

- iticu, on 05/03/2008, -1/+7Welll, seeing how paranoid Hitler was, they were probably some of the most loyal people to be with him upto that point to be in the same bunker as him.
Probably took alot to change their minds about him, it's just a shame it failed. - solid12345, on 05/03/2008, -0/+6Well for them to win the war Rommel would have to have been in charge from day 1. Once Germany invaded the USSR they were finished, no way they could hope to beat them with its massive population and vast territory.
If the Nazis were smart they would have held onto West Europe for 18-25 years, brainwashed a whole new generation of Europeans to their ideology and used these as more cannon fodder against the Russians in a future war. - cdigioia, on 05/03/2008, -1/+6They're joking...
- Bovorik, on 05/03/2008, -3/+7Yeah, all Hitler did was invade quite a few sovereign states, not even with the pretext of liberating them, and didn't waste anytime getting rid of political opposition in those states and then later carting civilians of those states off to work on Nazi projects.
Clearly he just had an idiot for a publicist. - fiskehaps, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4Yeah why don't we blame the soldiers and not the leaders for all wars throughout history?
(This is sarcasm) - shodanx, on 05/03/2008, -7/+10what ?? and the guy before you said "good riddance"
what the ***** is wrong with you guys ?!?! this is someone who rose up against tyranny
you ***** cowards, you'd take fascism in obedient party escort submission position - solid12345, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3Well come on his name is VikingLander, sounds like some sort of skinhead band name to me.
- NSResponder, on 05/03/2008, -1/+4I've read that the British had several different plans for offing Hitler, but they didn't go through with them because Hitler's incompetence as a commander-in-chief was very much to the Allies' advantage.
The big danger was that killing Hitler could result in someone like Rommel ending up in charge, and if that happened, then Germany might have won the war.
-jcr - BabyWookie, on 05/04/2008, -0/+3Go back to Storm Front.
- rolf, on 05/03/2008, -1/+3Digg and it's stupid handling of urls :(
http://members.iinet.net.au/~gduncan/assassination ... - novenator, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2Until lat 1943 or perhaps mid 1944, Hitler was actually the most popular leader Germany had. Not because he was a nice guy, but he understood how to control his image, had some of the best propaganda experts in the world behind him, and for most of the german population (with many notable exceptions), he seemed like he was almost single handedly making Germany the main powerhouse in Europe. Just goes to show how easily manipulated the masses can be.
- fiskehaps, on 05/03/2008, -1/+2Why do I think about WW1?
In the first war was Russia beaten badly by the Germans, and not long time before the German attack, had Soviet some big problems in their war with Finland. - robthom, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Mmmmmm, foam mattress...
- solid12345, on 05/03/2008, -1/+2Honestly people do give these guys too much credit. Yeah they wanted Hitler gone but most wanted to sue for peace and keep the Nazi state intact as well. In some ways it might have been WORSE in the long run because an armstice might have been signed and instead of complete surrender of Germany there would be a Franco-esque post-Nazi state set up that would have continued the tyranny.
- gamche, on 05/04/2008, -0/+1You didn't read the article did you. It's about a man who attempted to assassinate Hitler not a man who plotted with Hitler.
- RedHerringHack, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Wow you are a world class piece of ***** with an F in History.
- RedHerringHack, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1There's no hell. Except Detroit.
- robthom, on 05/03/2008, -2/+3German bashing. Racist IMO.
- shodanx, on 05/03/2008, -0/+0and no one got the portal reference :(
- jpowell180, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1Had the plot succeeded, Germany would have been able to hold out longer against the Allies- without HIter's interference, the Generals would have been better able to do their jobs.
- Bovorik, on 05/03/2008, -2/+2It's called "sarcasm".
- shodanx, on 05/03/2008, -4/+3they were just pawns
- robthom, on 05/03/2008, -4/+2^^ Over my head. That must be college humor or something I guess.
- robthom, on 05/03/2008, -4/+2"Man, I am SO COOL"
No, you are not. Buried. - cdigioia, on 05/03/2008, -2/+0Looks like you were right, my mistake. Still gonna bury you for using the word "pwned" though...
- robthom, on 05/03/2008, -3/+1* utilizes awesome leet punctuation.
Duuude!
* Your an *****. - JoshChan, on 05/03/2008, -4/+1actually shodanx was joking. pwned.
- dudefather, on 05/03/2008, -6/+2*inset edgy comment comparing Hitler to George Bush*
Man, I'm so cool.
*turns hat backwards in light of new status* - robthom, on 05/03/2008, -6/+2?
The first guy was better. - grimward, on 05/03/2008, -5/+1I can't help but speculate if a cryo chamber just started it's revival cycle somewhere in the antarctic now :P
It's one of the strangest myths out there.. seriously, even the king myths can't top this one. - robthom, on 05/03/2008, -9/+4"...this is someone who rose up against tyranny..."
Actually I'm all for that, but big H was good tyranny. - robthom, on 05/03/2008, -8/+2^^ Your all smart and stuff. But do you still like chicks?
- DesertDude, on 05/03/2008, -8/+1No, the soldiers were good. They were forced to commit all those atrocities. They were good, good people. They had no choice. They're essentially good. They HAD to do those things. Did I mention they were good?
The Germans probably prayed for the "troops to come home safely" back then too, blaming everything on Hitler and exonerating the very tools he used to commit those war crimes. - RetepNamenots, on 05/03/2008, -9/+2His family says?
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -7/+0nt
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -8/+0Have fun burning in hell.
- tomjm5000, on 05/03/2008, -13/+5They waited all the way until 1944?
- CarStan, on 05/03/2008, -11/+1I dont want to know what the world looks like in 2070 when i'm 90
- Aldhelm, on 05/03/2008, -16/+4hmm this makes me think. We in the 21 century are happy and supportive that these soldiers decided to take out their leader. At that time the Holocaust was top secret and all Hitler did wrong was invade Poland and annex the non German part of Czechoslovakia (the Czechs themselves invaded the German area in 1919). The invasion of France wasn't wrong since France declared war on Germany and the Soviet Union was an evil empire (all though they never called themselves that).
Now fast forward it to 2008. George Bush has invaded two countries is supporting the destabilisation of an another country. He's unpopular, lied and his crimes are known. If a group of soldiers decided to kill him how would the public react?
Probably call those guys traitors. - Sweeper18, on 05/03/2008, -16/+3*insert edgy Hitler comment here*
Man, I am SO COOL - vikinglander, on 05/03/2008, -27/+10Traitor.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -19/+2Here's something to think about: You can't hate the nazis (except obviously Hitler and his closest generals) without blaming the current soldiers for the war.
- robthom, on 05/03/2008, -32/+5Good riddance. RIP big H.
