He Took a Polaroid Every Day, Until the Day He Died
mentalfloss.com — Yesterday I came across a slightly mysterious website — a collection of Polaroids, one per day, from March 31, 1979 through October 25, 1997. There’s no author listed, no contact info, and no other indication as to where these came from. So, naturally, I started looking through the photos. I was stunned by what I found...
- 9434 diggs
- digg it
- Phulvia, on 05/22/2008, -4/+438this was just amazing.
- chromerium, on 05/22/2008, -9/+113Just when you think Digg is being taken over by political nut-jobs, it comes out with something like this. Great stuff, and a reason to keep coming back.
- Brainmodder, on 05/22/2008, -22/+7Thank goodness! Remember any digg post that involves politics was paid for and is likely crap.
- Handonam, on 05/22/2008, -2/+19yea i'd have to agree.
very touching. It feels rewarding to get an article like this on digg. - buckrogers1965, on 05/22/2008, -2/+22Yeah, it sucks that you can't just filter out the political posts. Oh wait, you can.
- chromerium, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4I do enjoy the political side - its news, after all. I just hate it when we get flooded with it.
- theodenking, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Political stories maybe, but it seems politics worms its way into every comment thread these days.
- jamdogg, on 05/22/2008, -5/+8Thank God for MrBabyMan!
- feshmania, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2i think you're right...this is one of the types of things Digg started out being for...yeah politics are important and everything, but I think seeing people, seeing what there is in the world is the best of what digg has to offer--not whether or not Barack Obama is wearing his flag lapel or not.
- Aroundtheworls, on 05/22/2008, -1/+12Amazing and sobering to see how little time he had between his initial diagnosis (or what he reveals to us anyway) and his death- just 6 short months.
- akey, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5so poignant.
- BrianOl, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12Whats almost as amazing is how much something like this would cost. A 10-pack of Polaroids costs around $20. This was a really expensive project.
- jay019, on 05/22/2008, -3/+15Yeah, but remember 1 pic per day = $2. You'd waste more than that on pointless crap you dont need.
- secrity, on 05/22/2008, -0/+14Polaroid film has always been comparatively expensive and SX-70 was a high end camera with premium price film packs.
Today's exotic prices for SX-70 film are much higher than they would have been when it was commonly available. Polaroid film used to be available at discount stores and mail-order at a moderate discount, and near date or recently expired film could frequently be purchased for half price. SX-70 film packs are/were also unique because they contained a flat 6 volt Polapulse battery.
As far as hobbies and art projects go, a dollar or two a day (in today's dollars) isn't all that expensive. I believe that this project was well worth many times the money that it cost.- kaleesh, on 05/22/2008, -3/+2good thing we have cellphones to capture our whimsical little lives then?
- GawtMilk, on 05/22/2008, -1/+23This was really comforting. You look at "dying at 41" as this awful event, that it's such a short time period.
Then you look at the photograph of all his Polaroids lined up on a wall, and see the amazing span that 6,697 days is -- which wasn't even his full life -- and you see the vast number of things a human can experience even in a relatively short time period.- Dokkodo, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2I agree. But I would also say that life is too short. I wish I could live forever.
- fr4gth3w3ak, on 05/22/2008, -10/+4Pics or it didnt happen...oh wait
- eltrev, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8just inspirational, but man - that makes me feel melancholy.
I have know doubt that I will get buried deep for saying this (and this is a brutal forum for a personal link), but this is exactly why I choose to collect my memories in this format: http://elliotts.eachday.com - Over the long term ... over a lifetime - the temporal format is what is what provides the most perspective, and is the most meaningful.- thaistick, on 05/22/2008, -3/+1yes - not wise to post a personal link here. Get ready for buries and snarky replies.
I immediately dugg you down, and then looked at your link. The "View Memory Stream" in the upper right is awesome. I do see your point.- purplehaze420, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Cool idea... But I'd be a bit creeped out knowing that any random digg user can now view pics of my daughters and family...
- thaistick, on 05/22/2008, -3/+1yes - not wise to post a personal link here. Get ready for buries and snarky replies.
- hukarez, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1Pictures say a thousand words. That's a heck of a lot of pictures. Good find, I'll have to favorite this.
- Nollykin, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Very inspiring, and moving. I'd love to see the exhibit, in it's entirety. Can't wait until the website is fully operational.

- chromerium, on 05/22/2008, -9/+113Just when you think Digg is being taken over by political nut-jobs, it comes out with something like this. Great stuff, and a reason to keep coming back.
- rawg, on 05/22/2008, -3/+246It's incredible that just a polaroid a day can provide such a window into someone's life. Juxtapose that with our current generation which will have the most blogged, photographed and video captured lives in the history of humanity. Good find.
- jleems86, on 05/22/2008, -15/+3"Our generation will have the most blogged, photographed and video captured lives in the history of humanity" until the next generation comes along.
There, fixed that for you- GTKashi, on 05/22/2008, -2/+8The difference is the next generation won't be doing it willingly.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7you didn't have to be a jerk about it, you had a valid point.
- Modulo, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9gosh, thanks jleems86, without you fixing that I would have assumed that rawg was talking about the history of the future.
- mparker7410, on 05/22/2008, -5/+11Which makes it all very uninteresting.
- dOOBiEx213, on 05/22/2008, -2/+5and that's a good thing...why?
- Pixelante, on 05/22/2008, -3/+8Unfortunately their lives will not be as interesting. Especially their comments: "ZOMG I'm so special I have TEH INTERWEB and nobody understands me and I want to die and this Saturday I'm going to slit my wrists while listening to My Chemical Romance."
Rinse and repeat every week of their lives.- GumdoMike, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5Emo +1
- ScottyQuest, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9Yeah, previous generations were really slacking on blogging their lives.
- ar0ne, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Just think ... all our offspring can just google us now. family trees will become obsolete.
- Pixelante, on 05/22/2008, -2/+0Oh, yes. Put all the information on the web for all to see. Post the irrelevant fact that some of your relatives had cancer. Let health insurance google up that fact. It's gonna be a cool future.
- jleems86, on 05/22/2008, -15/+3"Our generation will have the most blogged, photographed and video captured lives in the history of humanity" until the next generation comes along.
- Odenized, on 05/22/2008, -3/+146Just imagine what your life would look like through thousands of polaroids? It certainly would be a sureal experience looking back through them all.
- dOOBiEx213, on 05/22/2008, -2/+62Day 1: Digg
Day 2: Digg
Day 3: Digg
Day 4: Digg
Aww, ***** this. - Modulo, on 05/22/2008, -5/+9soooooo...... basically, remembering, but with the cyan washed out and a half inch white border around it?
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 05/22/2008, -0/+14"soooooo...... basically, remembering"
- What did you do six days ago?
- Was September 5 2006 a good day?
- What did you wear in June 1999?
None of these questions are terribly important. But if you wanted a picture of your life - something to look back on one day - and keep more than just broad strokes, do you really think your memory would serve you so well?
(Well, it may if you have photographic memory.)
I think this is a fascinating project. Most people wouldn't do it because many of their days are unimpressing, slow and exchangeable ... but maybe that's the point.
If you had pictures of it, you might be more inclined to do something (more) relevant with your days.- Modulo, on 05/24/2008, -1/+2Please. My life is a constantly evolving upward spiral of kickass. If I had any time that wasn't spent being frigging amazing in every possible, some impossible, and even a few umpossible way/s, then, maybe, I would choose to look back, but as for now and the foreseeable future, I am like the bastard love child of Lot's wife and a shark made out of awesome, and the only way to keep from getting turned into a drowned shark-woman made out of salt by the combined wrath of Jehovah and Neptune is to keep accelerating up that spiral, never stopping and never looking back.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 05/22/2008, -0/+14"soooooo...... basically, remembering"
- ivantalboys, on 05/22/2008, -3/+2My life in polariods would be similar to Crysis on very high settings. Only less guns, aliens and tropical beachs.
- Millsee, on 05/22/2008, -2/+6Your life in polaroids.... at a guess, is a collection of photos of you playing Crysis?
I'm not having a go, my polaroid collection at the moment is just loads of pics of me glued to GTA IV.
- Millsee, on 05/22/2008, -2/+6Your life in polaroids.... at a guess, is a collection of photos of you playing Crysis?
- ratexla, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4I do something similar at least... :) I've written something in my journals about EVERY day since June 27, 1995 and I plan to keep it up till I die (or become very senile). :B
Of course, that's not quite as mysterious! - Spyder2k, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Google History
- JohnnyRad, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2You can't anymore - Polaroid has discontinued its instant film cameras as well as film. Just happened a few months ago actually.
- lukeb1222, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0A thousand Polaroids is only about 2.7 years.... A picture every day for 20 years is 7,300 pictures. This darn cool though.

- beefchi, on 05/22/2008, -2/+173my father recently died of cancer, may 14th, and seeing this just completely breaks my heart.
it is really touching see all of this, and he seemed like a great person.- revjustin2, on 05/22/2008, -2/+47 It was at this time a year ago that we learned my Dad's bone marrow transplant wasn't working. By June 9th, he would be gone and my life would be changed in ways I still don't grasp. These pictures, in some strange way, are a tribute to everyone who was taken by cancer.
- bobcrotch, on 05/22/2008, -47/+2What the ***** does this have to do with everyone who has died of cancer? I'm sorry for your families loss, but I highly doubt your father (or any of the 5 people in my family who have died of cancer) had anything in common with this man, or this article.
Don't associate something amazing with something as pervasively poisonous as cancer.- chaosium, on 05/22/2008, -5/+14You're worthless.
- thefreshjive, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5You are a moron. Many typical cancers decrease the human body's ability to produce white blood cells. If you've taken any high school biology, you'd know that white blood cells are vital. Thus the reason for bone marrow transplants. Revjustin2, beefchi sorry for you loss.
- Cougnut415, on 05/22/2008, -0/+13I think what he meant to get across is that these pictures give a window in to what it's like to watch someone go through cancer and lose to it. This is something people who have dealt with situations like these firsthand will be able to relate to. It will bring back memories of it, the good and the bad. It's a mutual sympathy that brings back the lost one(s) in your life. Brings back the hurt, but also brings back the love. It keeps that person alive through our hearts.
Some of the good you see in this is that his girl actually married him despite his condition. That's true love. Props to her. That probably made him the happiest person on earth. Even if he didn't last long after that, I'm sure it helped escape some of his torment.
The fact that this man had the courage to continue this project through cancer is amazing. My uncle had lung cancer and would not let me or my siblings see him in his condition... I would not have cared how bad he looked. Hats off to Jamie Livingston. Rest in peace. - GumdoMike, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5It pains me to digg you down for the sole reason that many people will not get to see the insightful and respectful reply that Cougnut415 posted.
- Millsee, on 05/22/2008, -9/+3Wow, I am amazed at your inability to express love or have any compassion.
I bury you and your ignorant, moronic comment wholeheartedly.
P.s. I'm glad people like you exist. It makes all the good people in the world look so much better. - CiXeL, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1i swear i hear of more and more people coming down with cancer everyday. its scary. i think we've really poisoned our environment to the point where its leading to exponential rates of cancer.
people try to blame genes but all the genes are is something that is susceptible to a pollutant in the environment which allows you to get the cancer. its not the genes fault, its the ever increasing poisons in our environment.
how do we know what the chemicals in our shampoos and deoderants we use everyday mixed with preservatives and pesticides in our food combined mixed with petroleum fumes inhaled when we pump gas do? - xXRobbyXx, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Touching story. My dad died of leukemia this year, this story brought tears to my eyes.
- FecalHurler, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1Maybe because people can relate? Maybe because they've lost someone they love to the same exact thing? It may not be relevant to you but it certainly is relevant to them.
- bobcrotch, on 05/22/2008, -47/+2What the ***** does this have to do with everyone who has died of cancer? I'm sorry for your families loss, but I highly doubt your father (or any of the 5 people in my family who have died of cancer) had anything in common with this man, or this article.
- sabach, on 05/22/2008, -1/+14I lost my father to cancer in '91 and my brother in '04, he was gone in just 4 months. Hang in there, it'll get better. I have beat cancer myself twice now.
- FecalHurler, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2I'm sorry to hear that you've lost two family members to it... But it seems that you're a fighter. Keep fighting the good fight!
- eleonooore, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8Beefchi, i felt just the same. My dad died from cancer last year, he was a musician and a photographer.
I think it made that story even more touching to me, and i didn't have the courage to send the link to my sisters.
However, i feel like this story is so moving to anybody with a heart, maybe too because it's told with so much discretion and respect.- raulsantos307, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Absolutely. I've never lost any of my family members to cancer, but I felt so incredibly moved and touched by this story, mostly due to how personal it was, and how he was taken early in his life... incredible article.

- EmitStop, on 05/22/2008, -4/+18Amazing, make sure to take a look at the full thing. Is he dead in the last photo (10-25-97) Or was it the next day that he died (10-26-97)?
- nshady, on 05/22/2008, -4/+10I can't work out whether "pics or it didn't happen" is appropriate or inappropriate in this situation.
- kristoaster, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4It says in the text he died on the 25th, so it's either him just before he died or actually dead.
- Wiitesters, on 05/22/2008, -2/+50A must see. Jaimie Livingston took one Polaroid snapshot of something he found moving, interesting or just personally important to him, every day, for roughly two decades, up to his death at 40. The resulting collection documents one of the most poignant, poetic and unpretentious photography projects I've witnessed. Very moving and poetic.

- ipwnedin1928, on 05/22/2008, -2/+13this is life.... but despite knowing this i'm still depressed. :-(
- FvckingFvck, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5I think of it as more of an uplifting story than depressing, this man obviously had a passion, and followed through until the day of his death, very awe-inspiring. Seeing something like this really brings a smile to my face.
- Millsee, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3I agree. It made me think that I should cherish every moment I get in life.

- ralphthemagi, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Mind if i join you?
- kaleesh, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3the best thing about being depressed is that it gives you a deeper insight than that of most average folk. i kinda think that is a gift even though depression is a downer... cheer up mate, there are millions of us like that out there :).

- lonelycanuck, on 05/22/2008, -3/+13I've never been so moved by an article on digg...
- doommachine, on 05/22/2008, -1/+12The site's slowing down slowly by slowly. Crawling and crawling. Does somebody have a mirror?

- killdashnine, on 05/22/2008, -5/+45Speechless. Thanks for posting this one ... this is the kind of stuff we need rather than inane politics diggs.
- ilapko, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3Or cute cat pictures.
- DharmaTurtle, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1THEN FILTER IT OUT.
/angry at people whining about something they can fix.- killdashnine, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1True enough but then you also miss the really good stuff sometimes and have to dig for it (no pun intended).
- sepllcehck, on 05/22/2008, -4/+16Wow.. this is fantastic.. I tried to do this.. (post a photo a day) and only lasted about 2 1/2 years...
Some of his work is very interesting....
my meager attempt.
godamonginsects.com (no advertising or anything) - vexingmodstwo, on 05/22/2008, -3/+70THIS is the kind of stuff I still come to Digg to see... I'm choked up.

- skeletorcares, on 05/22/2008, -32/+5bury the baby.
- Modestexcuse, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6What a great find! I felt compelled to leave a comment, maybe to persuade more to read this. It's well worth it.
- gapingass, on 05/22/2008, -48/+10***** babyman. Get a job you fat waste of molecules
- karel747, on 05/22/2008, -7/+3I'm stealing that insult.
- kl78229, on 05/22/2008, -5/+4Don't you think this goes a little beyond your petty popularity contest *****?
Who cares who submitted this.
This man's story deserves to be told and tens of thousands of people (if not more) are going to see it now. - jay019, on 05/22/2008, -4/+2Lol. This coming from someone who's user name describes in detail a part of their own anatomy.
- diggymow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12Great. Something awesome and it's down before I get to it.
- slythic, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7Had to log in just to comment how amazing this is. Who needs movies with this kind of plot when you can just read and see these images?
Very moving. - Overture1928, on 05/22/2008, -2/+8That last photo.... don't know what to say. Very depressing :(
- pstine, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5I think the site just crashed/is in the process of crashing.
Sad but good story, also the picture on 10/21/97 is really powerful. On another note his wife/widow is pretty. - andypop481, on 05/22/2008, -2/+44THIS is the kind of story that needs to get dugg, that SHOULD get dugg. Not the same **** like all the demotivational posters posted together. Again. But on a different site.
- Avngr75, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Every time I see asterisks like that I have to go check that my profanity filter didn't suddenly turn itself on.
- Pake, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Pretty cool, touching, and sad. It's been a while since something has given me the chills like this.
- Aurabolt, on 05/22/2008, -0/+18I wish I had a time machine so I could click a Digg link just minutes before it hits the front page so I could actually see what everyone is talking about, and not 2 days later =(
- phantom_mullet, on 05/22/2008, -2/+12If I had a time machine, I'd go back and get some Crystal Pepsi.
- CarStan, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4If i had a time machine i would go back and kill myself before i build the machine, thus creating a paradox that destroys the universe. Muhahahaha
Best.Plan.Ever- HotBaconSauce, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2I'm going to take a picture of you, so I can see you disappear.
- kabab, on 05/22/2008, -13/+2There would be lots of Quake in my collection :/
- pstine, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4Buried because you need to get out more.
- RMoore08, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Sad.
- orangethirteen, on 05/22/2008, -0/+23Yeah! This is why I joined Digg way back when... It's been so long I had to make a new password.
This is incredible. I have to give props to Babyman! This is pure magic, art, touching and inspiring.
Now the site is suspended.
Thanks so much! :) Beautiful. - iDiggIt42, on 05/22/2008, -0/+19This is giving me the urge to do a picture-a-day thing for the rest of my life.
- brettmurf, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6I was thinking the same thing.

- RMoore08, on 05/22/2008, -7/+5For being lost for words... you said quite too much.
- Haoie, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7I concur. And welcome to Digg.
- nvillalobos, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Welcome!
- aussieNickuss, on 05/22/2008, -3/+48Dugg for later viewing. The digg crowd has bought down the site in question.
- RMoore08, on 05/22/2008, -10/+2Hmm digging a story before you can even read it.
Is this how some stories are brought to the front page?- aussieNickuss, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5I read the posted story......which I found really interesting. It's the actual site that has the collection of photos that has been downed.
I'm a conservative digger.....I only digg stories that I find REALLY interesting or funny (or want to see later). - akey, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7no, it's social bookmarking-- the primary reason digg exists. You bookmark cool things, so you can go back to them when you want, and in this case, when the site's back up.
A collection of the pictures: http://tinyurl.com/52kajw
