The purpose of gender equality is to take the person's sex out of the equation. Doing so, if you would hit one person for something, you should hit another for the same thing.
The concept of not hitting women is a sexist belief indoctrinated upon men from a young age on. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't hit a woman unless it was legitimate self-defense, but I wouldn't hit a man unless it was either. I have a friend who got attacked by a drunk guy at a bar because he accidentally bumped into him or something. My friend defended himself pretty easily from the drunk guy since he used to be a bouncer but then the guys girlfriend attacked him for "beating up her boyfriend." He had no idea what to do and ended up getting his nose broken because he didn't know how to defend himself against her without hurting her.
