- punwin, on 10/26/2008, -0/+86Australian slang. Sickie = sick day from work. The following WOO is merely a celebratory exclamation.
- iceman0113, on 10/26/2008, -3/+81Not surprising. It's IS dailymail...
- blackinthmiddle, on 10/26/2008, -2/+78He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I kinda disagree with this whole thing. Actually, I like the way my job does things. They give us "PTO" days, or personal time off. That way, no one has to call in with stories of how zombie aliens came and destroyed their car so they can't get to work. Bottom line, in some instances you just need a day off and rather than forcing people to make up lies, employers should just give them the day off. Obviously, the employee has to give decent notice.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -6/+74Must have thought that he was posting it to his Myspace account.

- Manther, on 10/26/2008, -1/+45It was probably the HR guy that was on facebook, and in a big company, I'll bet he gets paid to check on things like facebook and myspace when people call in sick.
- PullingTeeth, on 10/26/2008, -0/+35Is this what's meant by net neutrality?

- ToadX, on 10/26/2008, -1/+26I actually seriously agree. I don't see why this is such a huge problem. If this guy has a huge hangover and is feeling terrible, that should be a valid medical reason to take a day off. He could even go to the doctor and the doctor could legitimately provide some kind of note stating he actually is not well.
Him actually being the one who was reckless enough to cause the medical condition is a different story. - Jleagle, on 10/26/2008, -7/+29All jobs have this.
He didn't give decent notice. - bhavinp, on 10/26/2008, -20/+40Buried because I saw this on digg 2 weeks ago.

- poidh, on 10/26/2008, -0/+13He said "I'm still trashed", which means he is still drunk from the night before.
However, there was nothing to stop him being genuinely ill and just posting that to make himself look "cool". His employer can't prove he was drunk, even though he probably was. - JuanBSU, on 10/26/2008, -3/+15Kyle the Plumber...er...Call Center Guy!
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -1/+13darwin award ≠ stupid award
- Ajajadude, on 10/26/2008, -2/+14While the kid wasn't too bright to put the fact that he was too wasted the night before to go into work on his Facebook profile, the company shouldn't be trying to call him out on his reasons for calling in sick. For one thing, extremely hungover employees are about as productive as a raging case of hemorrhoids, but more importantly, it seems somewhat stupid to take what an HR guy sees on a Facebook profile at face value. I for one have be known to occasionally lie on the internet. I'm sure other people do, too.
My company's policy is that we cannot ask for details if someone calls in sick for one day. All they have to say is "I'm sick" and that's that. If they're calling in sick for an extended period of time, a doctor's note is required (especially if they want sick pay). But, we also have a point system where if you accumulate X number of points in a year, you're fired (calling in sick, being late, etc. gains you points).
I can see this being a lawsuit...if it were in the U.S. - inactive, on 10/26/2008, -1/+13@Ajajadude
There would be no lawsuit in the US. Companies have the right to fire you for any reason, as long as it isn't gender/age/religion/race, etc. It wouldn't have been a problem if he had asked for the day off in advance. My small business has three employees. If one of them needs time off, I am very lenient. I'm not lenient when the person calls in 20 minutes before they are supposed to be at work to tell me they aren't coming, but I've been sick before, so I let it slide. But, if I then found out, they were bragging on their Facebook page how they got one over on me, I would fire them. Part of being a responsible adult is knowing not to get drunk when you have to work in the morning. I'm sure this firing pisses off all you teenagers, but when you grow up, you will understand. If it were your business, and you had to spend a couple hours trying to convince another employee who was supposed to have the day off to come in, yo would fire him too. Moral of the story: Don't get drunk on a work night. - Kingoftherings, on 10/26/2008, -0/+11That law doesn't apply to your employer.
- silenceissexy, on 10/26/2008, -0/+11Bueller . . .
Bueller . . .
Bueller . . . - inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+11Raian, the guy got drunk and missed work. He lied to his employer about his illness, then bragged on Facebook about it. He has no lawsuit. God, people, take some responsibility for your actions. What can he sue for? If you were an employer, you would probably see things differently. This kid needs to learn his lesson, and move on to a different job. I hate when everyone suggests that every time they don't get their way they sue. It's litigious *****.
- cyrusuncc, on 10/26/2008, -1/+11I'm so glad his Mommy is sticking up for him. At 21 years old he should have learned to stand on his own two feet by now.
