- Jerk, on 07/18/2009, -17/+255She exhibited some of the same signs DUI/DWI drivers do. I'm sure they were asking her to exit the vehicle to assess whether or not she was intoxicated. Then she ran, not something innocent, law-abiding citizens usually do.
But by all means, don't let that get in the way of your little anti-police tirades. - stuartnow, on 07/18/2009, -28/+253Not funny, just sad.
- sunniershine, on 07/18/2009, -5/+190I love witnessing the results of fear mongering. The news has this woman scared *****.
- barkus, on 07/18/2009, -22/+172So why did she need to get out of the car? Because she was driving too slow? I'm as confused as the old lady.
But speeding off was a stupid thing of the old lady to do. - TheMu, on 07/18/2009, -27/+159That makes no sense. She wasn't afraid of police brutality, she was afraid of someone posing as a policeman trying to steal from her. Stop turning this situation into something it's not.
- gasoline, on 07/18/2009, -8/+132Often people drive very slowly when they're drunk, so there's a valid reason to check slow-moving vehicles.
- illlookforit, on 07/18/2009, -1/+123Commendations to the very polite and patient 911 operator. She was very, very gentle with that old lady.
It was okay for the lady to call and verify that they were cops, but when it WAS verified, she should have obeyed them. Driving off was a criminal act and thankfully the streets were relatively clear when she did it. - dvdave, on 07/18/2009, -15/+130What's with all the negative police comments here? They said she was driving unsafe. You saw her speed away. Would it be OK for her to plow into some innocent people?
- grantmoore3d, on 07/18/2009, -15/+117What the police did was completely reasonable. Stop bashing something just because you're on the anti-establishment bandwagon.
- OUSooner, on 07/18/2009, -44/+125I hate to be the voice of the cynic, but there has to be someone more threatening to public safety than an old lady driving too slow. Was the chase necessary?
- dandd2006, on 07/18/2009, -6/+76They used the spike strip because she sped off and refused to stop even though she had a line of police cars behind her. The cops didn't force her to get out of her car, they allowed her time to call 911. They also allowed her to stay on the phone while she was out of the car.
When she started to get back into the car that is when they tried to stop her. You have to look at it from the cop's perspective. Why is she trying to get back into the car? Is she going back in the car to grab a gun? Is she going to jump into the car and speed off?
I'm thinking she has more going on than simple paranoia. Her actions don't seem like those of a mentally stable person. - TheMu, on 07/18/2009, -6/+74And while we're on that subject, why does every article on Digg that is even loosely related to the police have to turn into a pissing match to see who can hate the police more? We get it Digg; the police can be dicks. There's no need to irrationally overgeneralize this, especially given this extremely out-of-context video clip.
- redfox2600, on 07/18/2009, -0/+58I don't know about you but I been ran off the road enough time by old ladies to know that even if they're driving slow they can still ***** you up pretty badly.
- cristinamk, on 07/18/2009, -15/+68paranoid old ladies shouldn't have drivers licenses...
they are a public danger - Ryokuchaa, on 07/18/2009, -5/+57Actually that is what the narrator leads us to believe, but no where in any of it does it sound like that is her story. If you listen to the 911 call it sounds more like she doesn't understand why the officer needs her out of the car to write her a ticket, which she has no problem with being written. She also says she will follow him to the police station. It also sounds like she would have got out of the car if the officer had told her why.
I think it is true that people are losing confidence in police. Maybe it does have a bit to do with more videos of people being tasered on shows such as this one. But I think it has a lot to do with police also being over tasked, dealing with more violence, while lots of stations being understaffed, which all leads to stress, which leads to hot tempers. It sometimes seems like they deal with everyone on these videos as if they are the most dangerous person in the world, but if I was in their shoes I am sure I would act as cautious with all the other side of the stories where cops are shot and killed while approaching the vehicle.
I don't normally take the officers side, but in this case I am. Not only did he have patience with her making a call on a cellphone, other videos have shown cops taser people for being on their cell while being ticketed, it didn't seem like once was he even being a bit aggressive or hot headed. Her just taking off like that does lead me to think she might have some sort of "chemical imbalance" either medication or alcohol, which he probably noticed when he first made contact with her, which lead to him asking her to exit the vehicle. Which a officer does not have to state a reason to request you to exit the vehicle. - Zarimus, on 07/18/2009, -90/+133It's pretty sad when your police have lost the confidence of the citizenry to this extent. Sure the media is partially to blame for frightening people into responding like this but fear of the police is not a sign of a healthy community.
- partysan, on 07/18/2009, -6/+47Taking off like "a bat out of hell" is pretty easy to do when you speed up the damn video 3x. Sensationalist *****.
- Skitals, on 07/18/2009, -0/+41I'm glad someone else gets it. If they just let her speed away... imagine if she went on to hit a pedestrian, and it was later found she was intoxicated or impaired in some other way. Hindsight is always 20/20... luckily police are proactive and try to get these people off the streets BEFORE they cause an accident and kill themselves or an innocent bystander.
- Suspected, on 07/18/2009, -3/+44I'm glad they pulled her over. There is nothing worse than an old person driving too slow; it impends traffic and increases the likelihood of accidents (due to people trying to get around the slow driver). Also, they're not responsible for her paranoia, and the 911 operator went to great lengths to assure her that everything was legit. You say using a spike strip on a 60s+ lady is overkill, but her gender or age does not magically decrease her potential to kill someone with her recklessness.
- MicrosoftAccess, on 07/18/2009, -3/+41I like how they fast forward the video to make it seem like she is flooring it. Trutv really knows how to sell this *****.
- charm803, on 07/18/2009, -4/+40While driving too slow is not the "actual" problem, as pointed out by gasoline^, it could have been a drunk driver.
Also, how many stories do we hear about old people needing their licenses revoked?
The fact that she CALLED 911 and was told by the operator that yes, those were real officers, she should just have gotten out of the car. And who is to say she WASN'T drunk? Being old doesn't mean you stop drinking. - mrmaroon, on 07/18/2009, -11/+44Yeah, ***** them upholding the law and preventing death and casualty!
*****. - scuba7183, on 07/18/2009, -0/+30and add tire screeching sounds
- MikeOxbigg, on 07/18/2009, -3/+28Seriously though, past a certain age people need to pass annual examination to keep their driver's license.
Their faculties are lessened, they are more easily agitated and can be a danger to others and themselves. There are plenty of 70+ competent drivers but there are some who qualify as ***** menaces. Let's not forget that they often hail from a time where to get a driver's license ALL you needed was to pay a fee. - Zantive, on 07/19/2009, -2/+26Was the traffic stop necessary? That's debatable.
But was the chase necessary? Absolutely. You can't just speed away from police officers, even if you don't think there was a valid reason for the stop. - cristinamk, on 07/18/2009, -7/+30so a paranoid old grandma can speed like crazy?
she wasn't endangering the lives of the community?
should they just let her go? - Brak710101, on 07/18/2009, -4/+27I fully support the officers here, driving too slow can be a safety issue, and since it is an older woman, she could possibly have a mental condition and she is lost/out of it. Pulling her over was a good idea, it's a shame that it escalated to a police chase, but it's also for her own safety that they ended the chase with a spike strip since I doubt she could handle driving fast since she WAS driving too slow in the first place.
And to those that say "***** the police," I hope one day when you're in serious trouble the police take their time getting to you, then you'll see just how important they are. - scuba7183, on 07/18/2009, -0/+22Yesterday I was pulled over for the first time. I failed to stop completely at a stop sign, (I was turning right). This was right outside of Warped Tour in Buffalo, NY. He asked me if i had anything to drink, (I hadn't), then let me go. Overall, it was a very positive experience
- deathstryk, on 07/18/2009, -1/+23Should they let her go, because she refuses to believe they were real cops?
She got a confirmation from 911, what more does she need? - algaeturd, on 07/19/2009, -5/+26That's not true. The 911 operator confirmed they were police officers. She was afraid because they didn't give her a legitimate reason to ask her to exit the vehicle.
She was suspicious of officers in her community. Plain and simple. Just like most people are in their communities. - eminn3m, on 07/19/2009, -2/+22That's how we're responding to the question. Down = "No" or "I disagree".
- dandd2006, on 07/18/2009, -1/+19To get pulled over for driving too slow, you really have to be driving super slow. 5-10mph under the limit isn't going to get you pulled over.
The cops also might have suspected that she was drunk and therefore driving too slow.
Driving too slow is dangerous to her and other drivers. It causes an unsafe situation where other drivers will tailgate her and pass her in no passing zones. Ever wonder why there is a minimum speed on the freeway? Because a car that travels too slow causes congestion and disrupts the flow of traffic. Traffic behind the slow car becomes congested and other cars will pass in an unsafe manner - aussieNickuss, on 07/19/2009, -1/+19A:) She could have been a drunk driver, and
B:) If somebody jumps back in their car and attempts to evade the police, there's reason to suspect they're hiding something and chase after them. - Shawn4168, on 07/19/2009, -0/+17A++++ WOULD GET PULLED OVER AGAIN
- stuffradio, on 07/18/2009, -4/+21Driving too slow is illegal.
- lofilotek, on 07/18/2009, -4/+20I wonder if her sweat shirt had a picture of a cat or a dog on it.
- Mike17102, on 07/19/2009, -0/+15They should never have let her get back in, that was the only mistake I saw the police make.
- SquigglyP, on 07/19/2009, -0/+14the cop said her driving was "unsafe". She said she had been driving slow. She probably was going slow, but was also probably weaving all over the place. We won't know for certain because the video only showed her being stopped, not her driving prior to the stop.
They probably wanted to give her a field test and/or breath test. The fact that she was acting paranoid and then drove away from a flock of cops pretty much tells me that she was either nuts or stoned/drunk. That's called "impaired judgement". - cfisavant, on 07/18/2009, -0/+13Who said anything about a taser?
- damnmonkey, on 07/18/2009, -2/+14But irrational over-generalization can be so much fun!
- deathstryk, on 07/18/2009, -6/+18yes! because this is digg.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -8/+20Some people twist everything to fit their agenda.
- IKORKYI, on 07/19/2009, -5/+17this woman is not mentally stable
- offthewagon, on 07/18/2009, -3/+15They probably asked her to get out to do a sobriety test. When someone drives slowly it is a signal they are intoxicated and trying to avoid suspicion. They were within their right.
After she took off, she could have lost control of the car and hit some ten-year-old kid trying to get home from a 7-11. They did everything by the book.
Say it with me. "The police are not the devil" - krazikamikaze, on 07/18/2009, -0/+12She wasn't scared of cops, she was scared of *fake* cops. The 911 operator assured her they were real. She had no reason to flee. And as mentioned before slow driving can be a sign of impaired driving, or at least someone who isn't fit to be on the road for whatever reason.
Jesus Christ, listen to yourself. Your irrational hatred of cops has made you justify speeding from cops as they hang from your open door. - deathstryk, on 07/18/2009, -13/+24DONT TAZE ME BRO!
- mturn, on 07/18/2009, -1/+12No? One of the signs of drunk driving is driving below the speed limit, and the video clearly states that she was pulled over for driving well below the speed limit. So yes, you could tell that from watching the video.
- andrewh7, on 07/19/2009, -0/+10AlwaysTurning - The cop told her she was driving in an unsafe manner. How could he explain any further or discuss a field sobriety test when she is hopping back in her car to speed off? Yes - you do have to get out of your vehicle. I am a Member of the Michigan Bar. How about you? Did you watch a few episodes of Matlock?
- charm803, on 07/19/2009, -0/+10@OUSooner
She was, up until she SPEED OFF! - andrewh7, on 07/19/2009, -0/+9Yeah - the HIGH SPEED CHASE really sells the idea that this woman is a overly cautious driver who never exceeds the speed limit.
