- PuterPrsn, on 04/22/2009, -5/+116When you raise a whole generation on thinking they're special just because they breathe, what do you expect? Schools no longer fail pupils who don't produce, they have removed learning how be a good loser & a good winner by removing all contests & replacing them with "everyone is a winner". The last "field day" my kids' school had, there were no blue ribbons or red ribbons or yellow ribbons - just orange ribbons for "showing up". Why bother to try harder? Everyone is equal, everyone is special, everyone deserves everything anyone else has.
Fooey! - Madlydancing, on 04/22/2009, -6/+100I never pass along articles to friends - but this one hits home.Beleive me this one is going to be passed on. Being a mother of 3 teenage girls that are so caught up in designer this and that, how they look, ect ect ect...., I realize that my generation has created self centered monsters! Maybe it was guilt of being a working mother in the high tech field that made me think that giving my kids "Stuff" made up for the time I spent away from them. Scary to think about what will become of this geration of kids when it's thier turn to run the country.
- diskoh, on 04/24/2009, -4/+79You guys might be, but I'm above all that.
- whahaa, on 04/24/2009, -0/+64did you just call yourself awesome, lisaawesome?
in a comment thread about narcissistic children?
because that's awesome. - Justkittie, on 04/22/2009, -3/+66I agree 100% with this article. And it's not just young people who act like they're the center of the universe; it's becoming more widespread among 30- and 40-somethings too. Reality TV has shown us that 'real' people with no outstanding talent just like us can turn rich and famous overnight, so suddenly everyone thinks it should happen to them.
We get so engrossed in promoting ourselves, being sure we get every ounce of praise and recognition and promotion we're due, that we forget to look around and help someone else out, or make eye contact with someone we pass on the sidewalk for the simple desire to make a connection, no matter how brief, with another human soul. - inactive, on 04/24/2009, -6/+63Every generation claims the one that follows it is "self-centered" or "doesn't care about society" or is "immoral". Same old schtick, new name.
- JustJoe4Life, on 04/24/2009, -1/+57More importantly, am *I* in a narcissism epidemic?
- FoxFaction, on 04/24/2009, -1/+56Well, maybe everyone else is in this epidemic, but I'm certainly not. I'm special.
- drmobutu, on 04/24/2009, -0/+49Well, I AM Time Magazine's 2006 Person of the Year, after all...
- PuterPrsn, on 04/22/2009, -4/+50It's not a very fine line at all. Self esteem is earned. Narcissism is learned.
- Hamerhead33, on 04/24/2009, -3/+47All these people pretend they read the article.
Dugg for the jailbait pic - inactive, on 04/24/2009, -1/+44I for one, put about 75% of the BLAME on the parents. Hell, they raised the little ***** to be ***** by giving them every damn thing they wanted, instead of making them WORK for it.
Yeah, I'm old, GET OFF MY LAWN - GrammerPants, on 04/24/2009, -2/+39"Maybe it was guilt of being a working mother in the high tech field that made me think that giving my kids "Stuff" made up for the time I spent away from them." And there is your problem, there is no "maybe" about it.
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -1/+35Facebook status updates are full of passive aggressive narcissism
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -0/+33Alright enough with this article. Time to discuss about me.
- larrimer7, on 04/24/2009, -4/+36Answer: Yes
- GMH24, on 04/24/2009, -1/+29Pretty good article, but claiming that the up-and-coming generation has problems x, y, and z, which of course previous generations didn't have, has been going on probably since Adam complained to Eve about how the new brother-killing generation was doomed to failure.
- michael0310, on 04/24/2009, -5/+33Well as an 18 year old preparing to graduate high school I consider myself part of what you are describing as the current "geration" of kids. I can assure you, it's ugly, but to be completely pessimistic about it all and say it is scary to think what will become of us is downright insulting. Just because we have a huge proportion of reality TV watchers and fake hospital room zombies doesn't mean all hope is lost. I can assure you, there are plenty of people out there my age that care just as much (if not more) about the success of our world as you do.
Thanks and have a nice day,
Michael Leonard - libbb, on 04/24/2009, -1/+28Narcissism is the lack of self esteem, a real self. A false self is created to inflate your self esteem.
- oboshoe, on 04/24/2009, -3/+30Your so narcissistic, I bet you think that article was about you.
- Aleman360, on 04/24/2009, -0/+27This has been obvious to me ever since Facebook allowed people to upload more than just a profile picture.
- BossKey, on 04/24/2009, -0/+21I couldn't believe Newsweek wrote an entire article about narcissism in 2009 without once mentioning Facebook (or Twitter).
- adesolatenation, on 04/24/2009, -14/+34Actually, this generation is one that smokes, drinks, and has sex less. They value volunteering their time towards causes, promoting political campaigns, and value the idea of romantic love according to polls in Canada and US. Actually, this generation overall isn't as self indulgent as previous generations.
Oh, no they have cellphones that use the Interwebs!
Calm down, relax, and quit with this baiting crap for readers. Use facts, not opinions - MalarkeyPN, on 04/24/2009, -2/+22I don't see why you can't have both be true at the same time. More "good" kids and more narcissists. Maybe the "smokes, drinks and has sex less" part is also a result of the "you are special" child-rearing philosophy, that they are two divergent causes rooted in the same effect.
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -1/+21When Twitter is the most talked about thing going on in the world right now, then do you really even need to ask? Of course we are all narcissistic. We watch reality television where everyone thinks they are a star, or for the "tweens" there is that Sweet 16 show on MTV which pretty much points to the end of western civilization.
We need a crisis, just to bring people back to planet Earth.
A few weeks ago there was an article on cell phones making a large impact in developing nations. The first thing many people thought of was "that's just what they need, self-absorbed people talking all day." That's how narcissistic we are. We can't even fathom a world without phones that, once they gain access to the technology, actually uses it to communicate. We can't quite see that our narcissism is connected to our lifeless bubble of privilege we live in, where death and old people do not exist. Only the young, beautiful, superstars. - chuckDontSurf, on 04/24/2009, -4/+23Well, I don't think we are, so therefore, we aren't.
- theartfuldodgr, on 04/24/2009, -0/+19If you'll excuse me for a moment, I have to go inform my mom she sucks because lisaawesome's mom is the best.
- DivineComedy, on 04/24/2009, -0/+18I am a thousand times more humble than the both of you.
- supermanly, on 04/24/2009, -1/+18♫ Talkin' 'bout my generation ♫
- rolan1bp, on 04/22/2009, -6/+22There is a fine line between self esteem and narcissism.
- mdelling, on 04/24/2009, -0/+16Yeah.. and now, if you punish kids for misbehaving, you're a terrible parent. We're supposed to get the to behave properly by rewarding good behavior... aka, give them stuff for being good, but don't make bad decisions have consequences.
- benologist, on 04/24/2009, -13/+29Does every generation convince themselves ***** as stupid as Facebook and Twitter are actually necessary business tools, and toss dumb ideas around like finding another job if their boss won't encourage them to use them at work?
Does every generation spend significant amounts of time affirming each other's believe that they somehow have some inherrent right to everything ever produced that can be digitized? Also it's censorship if anyone tries to enforce a pricetag. And it violates their free speech if they have to pay to see a movie.
Does every generation declare industries dead just because some facet of that industry can be done by them with a laptop/webcam/microphone? How many times have we heard garbage about how bloggers are the new journalism, while the only successful blog networks spew out garbage?
No generation's ever been perfect, but have any others managed to be so stupid in spite of being the first to have practically the sum of human knowledge at their fingertips? - inactive, on 04/24/2009, -5/+20Another classic case of old people giving young people the *****. "damn kids think theyre so cool and are better than everyone. well when I was in the trenches burying my best friend we didnt need ipods to be cool....."
- egoideal, on 04/24/2009, -1/+15Because all the previous generations were full of kind, caring people who didn't focus entirely on themselves.
- joshmoney, on 04/24/2009, -0/+13"Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else!"
- lordmike, on 04/24/2009, -0/+13I think we dated awhile back...
- whatthefu, on 04/24/2009, -1/+13The only problem with this kind of criticism is that--and I'm not accusing you of anything--most older generations criticize the "next generation" as monsters time and time again. It's been happening for a very long time. These people who criticize the next generation fail to look at themselves and their own problems, as well.
- 2Pharcyded, on 04/24/2009, -2/+14come to LA. its Narc, USA out here.
also dugg for the picture. - Disillusion, on 04/24/2009, -2/+13I was expecting a paragraph or two about twitter in there...
- Phyltre, on 04/24/2009, -0/+11I have trouble taking your questions seriously, since the last one excludes all other generations in the history of man by definition and then asks if it could apply to any other generation. If this generation is "the first" then you can't have "any others." I'm guessing that one was rhetorical?
A little perspective, please. "Every generation" is responsible for all of human history! "A generation" led to the downfall of Rome, "a generation" led to all wars ever. It is the pinnacle of narcissism to think you, personally, can take the measure of a generation before it has come and gone! - X9001, on 04/24/2009, -0/+10I think the problem is we live a life almost entirely free of any "real" hardships, yet we always pretend otherwise
- MonoDede, on 04/24/2009, -2/+12Psh, ***** this broad. I'm the ***** man.
- lordmike, on 04/24/2009, -0/+10"Why you're not so special."
Now you hurt my feelings! :`-( - AndrewDB, on 04/24/2009, -1/+10I'm more special than you, and I only know this because the reflection in my mirror tells me so and it never lies.
- Rain12913, on 04/24/2009, -1/+10This quote is a good example of why this article is mostly *****: "nearly 10 percent of 20-somethings have already experienced symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder, compared with just over 3 percent of the 65-and-over set"
I don't care if it's the 10th century, any population of 20 year olds is going to display more symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder than any population of those over 65. When your body starts to deteriorate and you start to lose your independence it's pretty hard to feel like you're better than everyone else. - mdelling, on 04/24/2009, -0/+8I agree with Puterprsn... as a programmer, I have to be self-confident - if I can't write it better than the last guy, why am I doing it? But that's based on years of programming, continually having the opportunity to compare my work to others, and lots of sitting in class and studying my ass off. Narcissism would be if I thought I should just get As without studying and a good job just because the world owes me one.
- thegrantman, on 04/24/2009, -1/+9I can hear Carly Simon singing that.
- TalkGibberish, on 04/24/2009, -0/+8Is it Narcissistic in here, or is it just me?
- spriggig, on 04/24/2009, -0/+8And once you cross it, the line mysteriously disappears.
