- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -4/+59Those people annoy me when they come to my door. I try to be nice and explain to them I'm not interested but they try to give me pamphlets anyways. I don't try to convert them to believe in science and evolution, because I can respect the fact that they have their beliefs and I have mine. I do try to be nice to them, though, unless they blatantly don't take the hint.
- chrisnyce2002, on 07/08/2009, -9/+62i've spoken to quite a few of them - they're good hearted.
- atlasdugged, on 07/08/2009, -4/+43I still don't get why religious people need to convert others to their belief system. Why can't we all just believe what we want?
- HeDiggMe, on 07/08/2009, -4/+42Their beliefs about blood transfusions are destructive to themselves. Too many allowed to die for no reason.
- Bukowsky, on 07/08/2009, -5/+42I've had the same two guys coming to my house to "show me the way" for about a year now. I've told them everytime they come by that I'm not gonna drink their kool-aid, and that they should stop wasting their time. They just don't give up. They're determined to convert me.
Now, whenever they drop by.. I just open my door while "trying" to hold my pit bull back. They see her and they take off pretty quickly. I guess Jehovah was allergic to dogs or something. - jlm408, on 07/09/2009, -2/+29If Jehovah's Witnesses believe that only a combined total of 144,000 are going to heaven, then why are they trying to get more people to join? Wouldn't you wanna keep that ***** a secret to try and up your chances?
- Rikkochet, on 07/09/2009, -0/+26Why don't you make up science and evolution pamphlets and keep them handy so you can exchange them?
"Just flip through it and feel free to come back if you want me to explain any of it to you." - everyonegohome, on 07/08/2009, -11/+35If I truly believed that people were going to be tortured in hell for eternity, I'd be out there trying to save people too. Doesn't make it any less annoying though.
- intthis, on 07/09/2009, -0/+22i had one approach me yesterday at guitar center... the quickest way to get them to move on is to tell them that you were, but are no longer a jehova's witness... because they're forbidden to speak to apostates... it's convenient.
- AmyVernon, on 07/08/2009, -1/+23Faked CANCER? Wow.
- ChuckDees, on 07/09/2009, -1/+23I'm buddhist, and really only bring up for context.
Not all "religious people" do this.
The Buddha forbid proselytizing.
I have seen monk's tell lay people to not pass out literature or even try to speak to anyone about buddhism. Who didn't ask to hear about it.
I have seen them sit down the new converts and explain it isn't their job to spread the "good word" - flynnfx, on 07/09/2009, -0/+20I'd gladly talk to 10 Jehovah's Witnesses before dealing with one Westboro Baptist follower.
- Bukowsky, on 07/08/2009, -11/+28*****... I've had a few friends that were Jehovah Witnesses (or their family was), and every single one of them were sneaky and shady. They would lie to your face. One of them hooked up with my girlfriend behind my back. Another guy even faked that he had cancer. No *****.
I don't want to generalize a whole group as bad... but my experience has taught me that they are not to be trusted. - azureskies88, on 07/09/2009, -4/+21I'm not really hurting anyone when I repeatedly hit someone with a cardboard tube, but it's still pretty damn annoying, and it just shouldn't be done.
- LordofChaosIori, on 07/09/2009, -5/+21We don't believe in hell.
- WraTH017, on 07/09/2009, -6/+22I have met many JWs, and all i can say is that i've never really met a nicer group of Christians. Digg me down, but despite the fact that they interpret the bible literally (they don't pick and choose), they're actually not a group of crazy extremist like others that take the bible a little too seriously.
I may be wrong... But maybe it's because I've never met a gay-bashing/science-denying/anti-environment/fear-mongering/political-zealot/abortion-doctor-killing JW... Sure, the knocking on your door at 8 am on a Saturday is annoying as *****, but there are worst things a christian can do to you and your community and I'm glad they're not out there doing it.
But then again, just because I haven't met any loonies, doesn't mean they're not out there. Maybe I was just lucky. - emecks, on 07/08/2009, -0/+16that is quite an achievement for anyone, religious or not :)
- SQLDigger, on 07/08/2009, -2/+18The fundamentalist Baptist churches and schools I went to as a kid were very much like that for the exact same reason - they didn't want people to go to hell. As an adult, the more relaxed non-denom churches I've attended (somewhat irregularly) still affirm the doctrine of eternal punishment for non-believers, yet don't have anywhere near the same emphasis on evangelism. It's a bit hard to reconcile the two notions - believing that non-believers are condemned to eternal punishment, yet not doing a whole lot about it other than listening to praise music on expensive sound systems and waving your hands in the air, then driving to your huge air-conditioned home in your Escalade and watching the game. I have a feeling that's one reason a lot of people, at least in So Cal, find it hard to take the Christian church that seriously.

Anyway, as far as the JWs go, if nothing else, I do respect their commitment to their beliefs. - Cannonballkid, on 07/09/2009, -5/+20One time they knocked on my door and asked if I would look at some pictures. I was bored and agreed. I was shown pictures of kids playing in fields families eating dinner people at the beach campy ***** like that. They asked me if this was a world I would want to live in. I said no, surprised they asked why. Well every picture they showed me was nothing but white families no Blacks ppl no Asians not even any old people. I said I enjoyed diversity in my life and I wouldn't want to trade it for anything. Well the lady showing me those pictures was black herself and out of nowhere agreed with me. I told her she might be able to convince more people if they reached out to other demographics in their pics. She then said well If I can get some different pictures will you reconsider? Nope.
- Rain12913, on 07/09/2009, -3/+18They aren't hurting anyone? How about their young children who die because they don't allow them to have blood transfusions? It's one thing refusing a blood transfusion on religious grounds as an adult, but forcing your beliefs on a child like that is wrong.
- elijahyossie, on 07/08/2009, -0/+14The only time I've had personal dealings with JWs was when my son was a newborn baby. He still hadn't quite mastered the difference between day and night, and when they rang the bell at 7am on a Sat morning, we'd both been asleep about half an hour.
7am at the weekend is a godless time of day, anyway! - kurtwinter, on 07/09/2009, -4/+18I'm in the Jehovah's Witness Protection Program
- Prayformojo777, on 07/09/2009, -0/+14I agree they are generally good-heartened and well-intentioned, but I also think I have a right to get annoyed when they knock on my door at 8 AM on a Sunday, waking me up and littering my neighborhood with their pamphlets.
- wannaBdug, on 07/08/2009, -12/+25They aren't hurting anyone. They have a passion and they are like the old door to door salesmen.
- Rikkochet, on 07/09/2009, -2/+14"Tried something new".
Awesome.
[Citation needed] - SQLDigger, on 07/09/2009, -0/+12All abolition movements should be abolished. Oh, wait.
- lucy22, on 07/08/2009, -1/+13They are very persistent.
- LedZepAddict, on 07/09/2009, -2/+13Actually Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe in Hell or Heaven.
- DavidNiven, on 07/09/2009, -3/+14Because if the Bible is even somewhat accurate and God is real, then most people are screwed. If you somehow knew about an accident waiting to happen that others didn't see, wouldn't you at least TRY to tell them?
- Rikkochet, on 07/09/2009, -4/+15You realize the intellectual dishonesty you're displaying in your closing, right?
"The accuracy of the bible" is unprovable. "The accuracy of the translation of the bible" is what you mean to say.
But that in and of itself shouldn't justify your faith. The pyramids are still standing and in pretty good shape - why don't you worship their deities instead? - KittySpark1es, on 07/09/2009, -1/+11Actually over 50% of the JW's I've met are black, so that's kinda funny.
- chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -1/+11Well he did die later. Not from cancer, from the LIES!!!!
- Rikkochet, on 07/09/2009, -2/+12I worked with a whole family of them. Generally good natured, honest, and had a good work ethic.
Say what you will about their lunatic views on cosmology, they're still good folks. - GorfTron, on 07/09/2009, -0/+10This is my strategy at getting laid.
- weatherlsp, on 07/09/2009, -4/+14My problem is when they refuse to let their kids have a life saving blood transfusion. That's child abuse as far as I'm concerned.
- ghostrc, on 07/09/2009, -0/+10Its like this:
144,00 are going to heaven, the rest of the Jehovah Witnesses will live on earth. The non-Jehovah Witnesses will be dead. - ve9gra, on 07/09/2009, -0/+9If I remember correctly from about 15 years ago... it's 144,000 that are going to heaven, and the rest will be living on Earth forever in a "garden of Eden" state, not the polluted state of today.
- NsinU8, on 07/09/2009, -2/+10Say what you will but back in the 30s & early 40s JWs were one of the first to have the balls criticize Hitler & where he was going. This is all while Adolf is Time Magazines Man of the Year. Hitler got pissed & ended up being rounding them all up in concentration camps.
- jordantneff, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8It's actually against the religion to vote, so it might not have been that he didn't have an opinion. I was raised as a JW, and man did it suck! Been enjoying the non-religious life for 8 years now
- knockknockknock, on 07/09/2009, -7/+14As a JW myself...
Our goal is not to irritate you. We realize that we could be doing other things with our time rather than preach, we are not programmed. 99% of us are family people with jobs, houses, cars and the normal stuff in life. Instead of preaching we could be working or playing golf, football, soccer or whatever... Financially speaking, we only spend money trying to reach people's hearts. We do our best to follow our example, Jesus Christ. We do this work because we love people and we want to follow our example. Yes, we spend precious time, energy and money to reach people because we love people and want everyone to enjoy a fulfilling life.
Matthew 24:14 - JohnDo, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7uhmm... he says that he's told them he's not interested and to "stop wasting *their* time"
interesting that he didn't say *his* time.
and why would you ever bring your 9-year-old house to house? - inactive, on 07/09/2009, -3/+10I used to enjoy speaking to any religious people who tried to convert me. All I had to do is say, "I already converted a week ago at the airport, didn't anyone tell you?, I gave all my possessions away, (these are just here waiting to be picked up by good will) I'm ready to go with you guys. Just one more thing. Can I bring a few magazines with me? I like to masturbate every hour or so, to cleanse my soul. That's allowed right?"
- InfinitySnatch, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7That's Prince.
- GrammerPants, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7Prince?
- LordofChaosIori, on 07/09/2009, -3/+10The Bible specifically says we should do so, therefore if we believe in the bible, we have to do what it says. Preaching to others included, no matter how unpleasant it is.
- analogkid01, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7Boy, that'll start to smell before too long.
- ZenMojo, on 07/09/2009, -4/+11"I don't want to generalize a whole group as bad... but my experience has taught me that they are not to be trusted."
You just did. - andyrunner, on 07/09/2009, -1/+8*too important to give up
/grammar brigade - YKKonMyZipper, on 07/09/2009, -1/+7Not sure if your aware but research on bloodless surgery has been made because of this. Also bloodless surgery has been show to be the best option for some things. Not saying its a good reason to refuse a transfusion but its interesting :/
- dasvoldus, on 07/09/2009, -3/+9 I am an atheist married to a Jehovah's Witness and from experience i can say that they are generally very honest people. As NsinU8 stated, they spoke out against Hitler and suffered for it when other Christians wouldn't. As a whole they follow the path that Jesus lays out in the bible more closely than other Christians I have known in my life. They will do this regardless of inconvenience to themselves. They don't celebrate holidays because the bible tells them they shouldn't. Even i know that the majority of modern holidays are pagan in origin. Doubt it? Show me an Easter bunny in your bible or perhaps you could show me how most modern christian customs are not based upon pagan rituals. Jehovah's Witnesses don't pick and choose between the biblical laws that they follow; for that I can at least respect them more than the typical lip-service-only Christians.
