It went up far enough, judging by the dead guy. - kilikogo, on 11/14/2007, -22/+138you misspell words in your head?
- shaggyb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+96"what kind of stuntman doesn't test those type of things?"
a dead one. - weeeezzll, on 11/14/2007, -0/+75Am I the only person who has no ***** clue what stunt this guy was trying to pull off? What exactly was he trying to pull off here...?
- sockpuppets, on 11/14/2007, -7/+76Idiot.
- falch69, on 10/11/2007, -3/+62Probably should have tested his harness before trying the stunt. The first thing in my mind when the video started was "that ***** is gunna snap".
- Etaoin, on 11/14/2007, -4/+62Spelling police, actually. And I think that makes you the grammar police police, and this makes me the grammar police police police.
- betobeto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+55A Darwin Award?
- ohthehumanity, on 10/11/2007, -1/+43What exactly was it that he acomplished ?
- billyfoxtrot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+36Yeah, what the hell was that narrator talking about? Was that a joke? Falling to your death while trying to do some stupid amateur stunt isn't that much of an accomplishment.
- Rayza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33Yeh, it was a suicide..
- johngib2006, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32I think he just wanted to be attached to a flying plane.
- Rooster99, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32@bysin
Even if they were going relatively slow, the fact that the place in airborne indicates that its at least going >100kph. Also it looks like pretty rugged terrain below him so it would have at the minimum severely injured him. Doesent look like the stunt was set up properly though. For a cable to just snap is pretty strange. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30I'm a private pilot, not that it matters at all, but the speed would most likely have been about 50kph, not 100.
- majordannyboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27It happened on Wednesday 1 April 1981, in Hawaii, killing Aussie stuntman Jim Bailey. This is the news report for those interested:
Australian stuntman Jim Bailey, known as ''The Human Torpedo,'' fell 500 feet to his death from an airplane while making a film for television Wednesday, authorities said.
Initially, authorities said Baily was performing for ABC-TV's ''That's Incredible,'' but the show's producer denied having any connection with the accident.
Witnesses, including members of the Maui Fire Department and the rescue unit, said Bailey, a resident of Brisbane, Australia, was suspended underneath a single-engine Ballanca by a strap and belt when the belt broke. He hung onto the strap for a few seconds before falling.
Officials said the stunt called for Bailey to hang on under the plane during takeoff and slide to a landing when the plane made a ''touch-and-go'' on the strip.
Bailey had appeared twice on ''That's Incredible.'' In an episode televised Jan. 26, he was dragged behind a car and crashed head-first through a flaming wall. On Dec. 8, 1980, an episode showed Bailey being dragged behind another car at 165 mph and then skidding 1,300 feet along the pavement.
But Alan Landsburg, producer of the ABC show, said there was no connection between Bailey's death and ''That's Incredible.''
''We have nothing going in Hawaii, we're not working there,'' Landsburg said from his Los Angeles office. ''We've been on hiatus for about three and one-half weeks. We finished our season and we don't start shooting until June.
''The accident obviously shocks us, but there's no way it could have been our crew filming. I tell you it was not our shoot. The accident was not even remotely connected with ''That's Incredible.''
Landsburg said it was possible the accident involving Bailey was being filmed by a private company and Bailey later planned to sell the film to ''That's Incredible.'' Landsburg said accidents have occurred during previous filming for the show, prompting safeguards.
''We've set absolute limits on what we'll buy due to the accident factor,'' the producer said. ''We've had a few accidents and we didn't want any others. We made it very clear that we wouldn't consider that type of outside purchase.'' - CatsAreGods, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26He didn't even make Wikpedia.
- GTPilot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25"Parachutes require a bit more time to open than he had at his disposal."
reserve chutes commonly used by hang and para gliders are made to deploy quick and most likely would have saved him even at that low altitude. - ryanonfire, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28a parachute would've been handy
- SuperMoses, on 10/11/2007, -9/+33You spell out words in your head?
- johngib2006, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25I agree, he should have tested the harness and had a 2nd harness on for backup, what kind of stuntman doesn't test those type of things?
- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25Parachutes require a bit more time to open than he had at his disposal.
- themastersb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23As soon as he let go the audio cut out. I was expecting him to be wearing a wireless audio device and then an "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *thud*"

"he accomplished something very few people had ever accomplished" - saladtossser, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Darwin award nominee
- mroffroad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19some people are too stupid to live and he gave *everything* to accomplish that.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Believe it or not, after a number jumps, you tend to do "odd" jumps to break up the normal routine of skydives. Believe me, I realize how silly that sounds but I had done a whole bunch of jumps out of this plane and had always thought "I bet I could hang between those wheels..."
Sounds like an episode of "famous last words", I know... I stopped jumping about 7 years ago... - Jrr6415sun, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18"It doesnt seem like the plane was that far up, judging by the shadow."
Those green things down there were trees, so he was pretty far above the trees
why didn't he have a parachute for emergency purposes? - tcxsnoop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14why?
- tyywebb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Jim Bailey..........sacrificed............EVERYTHING!
- Xageroth, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15... and we know he didn't test it?
- devinmurphy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Jim Bailey...sacrificed his life... for YouTube :(
- bysin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16It doesnt seem like the plane was that far up, judging by the shadow.
- BESTenemy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12 Yet another case of fatal adrenaline overdose. In my humble opinion, having a family is raising a kid is more of an accomplishment than doing something you won't even live long enough to regret. I'd call it an accomplishment if others watched the video and said to themselves: "I'm going to do something productive with my life", yet that never happens. More get inspired.
If it's done for money, then there are plenty of safer occupations. If for the thrill, then it's nothing but an adrenaline addiction - a hormonal drug high. Sorry for the guy, of course, but it's not as if he was powerless to do anything. He chose his path. If he hadn't there would've been one less apartment for rent. - kjartan, on 10/11/2007, -9/+20this video makes me ***** sick. it almost crosses the line from "viral video" to "snuff film".
- MattTurner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Poorly planned stunt
- spence3eb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Getting a video on digg's frontpage?
- Rooster99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Have you seen the footage from 9/11? Woudnt you consider that more of a 'snuff film' than this thing? The description is pretty straightforward. You knew what you were getting before you clicked on the link. If you dont want to watch, dont click the link, Simple!
- aggrogeek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Yeah, but a lot of the scenes in that are faked, or have added fake dramatized footage.
- mdouet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Darwin Award Recipient
- rally1, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13How was he planning on landing strapped in like that?
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15Strangely enough, I have done exactly that stunt myself, except I had no attachment to the aircraft besides me hanging on. I strapped on my rig and on the way up, I got the pilot to open the door and I slowly climbed below the aircraft and hung suspended between the main gear (C-182). I was able to hold on for about 20 seconds before it was just too hard and I had to let go. I tried to throw my legs forward and back over my head (kind of like a back loop off a swing set) but the wind was way too much for that.
- barakatx2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9maybe the cable was supposed to come off? maybe the stunt was to hang onto a plane with no ropes? i dont know but how else could the cable be that ***** if they were doing such a dangerous stunt.
- rickrwh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I seem to remember seeing this a long time ago. It was a guy who appeared on That's Incredible! alot and he was going to be released from the plane and skid down the runway on his chest. I guess it gets kinda tough to hang onto an airplane with 50 pounds of steel strapped to your belly. Whoopsie.
- bigfkncee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7what sacrifice is the narrator talking about? looked like a dumbass stunt that failed miserably to me .
- tomharding, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Er? In the same way he was when he took off?
- Aliarse, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7@WanderLink (#6860136)
Before you calling something a "Snuff Film", you should at least learn what "Snuff film" actually is, because this isn't. - mannymix03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Faces of Death (a movie) has tons of these
- tomharding, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8He may have ocean madness, but thats no excuse for ocean rudeness.
- basichuman, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11You are definitely retarded.
- MattTurner, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9It lasted 20 seconds and the guy fell to his death, thats enough information to conclude he didnt test the harness.
