- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+47Am I the only one who thought of an old 1930s switchboard operator upon reading the title?
- TheSkunkMonkey, on 02/22/2009, -0/+23Let me guess, he got a job standing on the side of a road wearing sign boards?
- borschwanger, on 02/22/2009, -0/+16'stalked by stork' aka cant keep it in my pants
- Hazz90, on 02/22/2009, -0/+9Looks like there will be plenty of demand for sandwich boards. There's a job for someone right there.
- DirtPile, on 02/22/2009, -0/+9I will join you.
- AboveandBeyond, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8The engineer was given a full time position as a sandwich boarder.
- svBlackManta, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8That college degrees don't guarantee work?
- jimbod, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8I knew resumes were a waste of time.
- ophello, on 02/22/2009, -0/+8I'm so gonna do this after I get my degree.
- Baltiman, on 02/22/2009, -0/+7you might have to...
- DirtPile, on 02/22/2009, -2/+9In my day sandwich boards were boards, not plastic things like this guy is wearing. Fair play to him, though.
- GovernmentsGun, on 02/22/2009, -0/+7I'm an engineer who can't find a job either. :(
Maybe I'll try this. If you're driving on the 60 in Arizona and you see me, honk. - inactive, on 02/22/2009, -0/+6A board is a flat broad surface, regardless of the material
- airmann90, on 02/22/2009, -1/+6Well, if he can't get the job with the sandwich board, this article will sure help.
- StAndrews, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5We've come a long way, baby.
- Secretion, on 05/04/2009, -0/+5As the headline says - he got a job from the sandwich board.
- FI5HERMAN, on 02/21/2009, -2/+7He can have the job !!!
- borschwanger, on 02/22/2009, -0/+5you are not
- waydee, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4Same story but from a legitimate source, with video:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7902831.stm - mike23w, on 02/22/2009, -2/+6"Man too lazy to write resume uses sandwich board to get job."
- djpray2k, on 02/22/2009, -0/+4I've been out of work here in England for just over five months and it sucks. The jobseekers thing is pointless, I get £60 a week, my mortgage is £470 a month. All power to this guy, I just wish it was that simple for the rest of us. I've had my share of interviews, an average of one every two weeks but there are so many people going for them it is untrue. I applied for a job I would have walked in to five years ago at half my previous salary and was told they had over 100 applications, I didn't even get a second interview.
- GovernmentsGun, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I've looked on jobing.com, indeed.com, arizonaengineeringjobs.net, craigslist and many other places. I've even had my college looking for me. So far, in two months, I've put in 82 resume submissions, and I've only heard three refusals so far.
One recruiter told me that companies are hiring experienced engineers at entry-level wages. And I think that's one of the things working against me. I just graduated from college in December.
I'm sure things will pick up eventually. But will it pick up before I get kicked onto the street and lose my transportation? That's what I'm worried about. - berroci, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3It's funny, I recently recreated the 1930s barrel on straps...and after just two days of wearing it, I got an offer of 50 cents to use it for firewood!
- Technopundit, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3Stay off the freeway or they'll bust you.
AZ was #48 in job creation last year. Paint a big thumb on that sign. - Hazz90, on 02/22/2009, -6/+9Good for him but I buried this because it's from daily mail.
- cubicledrone, on 02/22/2009, -1/+4The difference here would be that he wouldn't get hired. The irresponsible ***** who run businesses in this country are the reason the employment process is a circus. American management is too chicken-***** to employ professionals.
- Grazzit, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3I can't help but notice the guy in the 30's wearing the suit and looking sharp and the modern guy looks like a slob.
- inactive, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Actually the article imply his job contact came after the publicity. So the board was responsible in an indirect manner.
- Myztry, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Some girls parade for work though they tend to wear a bit less, and when successful end up being the meat in the sandwich.
- specialK16, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Me too.
- Hazz90, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2I lol'd.
- cubicledrone, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2It depends if you're willing to relocate...
...every 15 months.
Fixed.
Why the ***** would American companies hire an engineer? We don't build anything here. - yerdaddy, on 02/22/2009, -1/+3Must be a slow night to be running this one again.
- KingGorilla, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2You have my sandwich board!
- Agentdvd, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Engineer Recreates 1930s Sandvich Board.
- apena89, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2:) that's cute.
- joelav22, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Sometimes the futures answers can be found in the past. I think using something that was proven years ago but fell out of "fashion" is far better than wasting a ***** of time trying to be "innovative" when you probably won't get any better results
- computerguydk, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Sorry to hear you are out of a job. I will honk if I see you on the 60. Have you considered looking on jobing.com for work? I have found all my jobs in the Phoenix area from that website.
- Technopundit, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Monday, guys like that will be out by the hundreds.
- GREENEMAC, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Hey I live by the 60 and need a job as well...let's be sandwich board buddies!
- apena89, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1he now works as one of these.
http://www.sdlegislature.com/content/articles/2008 ... - palehorse864, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Engineer is credit to team.
What's that sandvich board? Hire him? Good idea! - apena89, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1a degree in wearing signs on the side of the rode to attract business.
- apena89, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1@ above
that would be interesting to see. - flyingclutchman, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Yeah, experienced people are taking entry level positions in lots of places, it sucks for people just getting out of school. Town I'm in right now they want people with a bachelors degree in CS and 5 years of experience for jobs that are less then 50k a year.
- Darksider, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Troll Alert Troll Alert
- flyingclutchman, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1because going on the internet and submitting your applications to companies is soooooo innovative
- franklymister, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1At least he did it with a lot more dignity than the American toy company executive that went around with a board asking for people to pity him: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1093638/We ...
This guy's board is serious and to the point. I'd have no trouble taking him seriously and interviewing him for the job. - Memitim, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1You really think that innovation is some kind of joke? Christ, if that is the prevalent attitude among American engineers then no wonder our companies are looking offshore for talent. It certainly helps me understand why I've been doing so well the past couple years despite the downturn as this is one engineer who will never stop trying to find ways to do things better, faster, and/or cheaper (and yes, you can occasionally have all three, but don't count on it to happen often).
Oh, and just so you know, the story was about a British worker, not an American. But please don't let me rain on your chance to take your personal pity party public, as I'm sure it's been working out oh so well for you so far. - apena89, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1he can haz jawb?
