I think most of these diggers may be imagining something large like our American dumpsters, which are not common in the UK. Wheelie bins are not exactly easy to get into, or spacious enough to lie in. We have them here in the U.S. for home garbage collection, and they are only about 60 gallons in size. I think it's highly possible he was dumped in the bin while passed out. Maybe even as a joke.
If it was actually a skip (the English version of our dumpsters, more like an enormous wheelbarrow basin), they are wide open, with no lid, and he would have been seen. A wheelie bin has a lid, and he may not have been noticed (although my bin handlers typically opened the lid when rolling it on to the collection truck--they are designed not to need to be manually opened, though it would surprise me that the collector wouldn't have noticed either a human being being passed from bin to truck or the significantly heavier weight of a wheelie bin with a man inside.
