            Therefore the original comment is pretty accurate. This is the AVERAGE (par) kind of thing you will get with women. I've had bad girlfriends. I've had great ones.

            Addicts become addicted to drugs because they have a psychological drive to first try.. and then continue using them. Whether the drive stems from depression, anxiety, or just because they like to get ***** up... marijuana plays no role in that process. It may be that marijuana is the first drug they try, but I guarantee if marijuana didn't exist, there would be just as many addicts. People with no knowledge of the subject labeling marijuana as a gateway drug are really out of touch with reality.

            What you're saying is pretty much exactly what I meant. I'm really not trying to pin anything on marijuana, just discuss the similarity between drug and porn addictions.

            Now the difference between the harmless cheese lover and the harmless marijuana smoker is that the marijuana smoker has crossed the boundary into illegal behaviors. That's an important step.

            Illegality shouldn't be the barometer for a porn addiction since most everything but kiddie porn is illegal. I'd say a better gage in that case is whether or not the guy pays for it--which this guy did. With the abundance of free porn on the internet, somebody who pays for it is either an idiot, an overly honest person, or an addict who's already spanked to the free stuff and needs more.

            @tech42er: At least when it comes to drugs, there's not much difference between bad and illegal, since the laws against drug use are kind of BS. It might be better to say "socially unacceptable" than "bad" though, since good/bad is pretty relative. And I'm not saying that all pron is "bad", but there are some certain genres of it that are, like the ones she asked him about.

            (Since this is digg and I'm already getting misunderstood in this thread, I should include a long winded explanation of the fact that she asked about gay porn and I don't want to say that gay porn is inherently "bad", but if you're in a heterosexual relationship with somebody who doesn't know you're into that sort of thing, it probably is about as bad as scat or bestiality).

            I still don't see how any "gateway drug" implication was clear without some illogical inferences on your part. My intent was clearly to relate porn and drug addictions to each other, not to establish any sort of cause for said addiction. And the controversy over marijuana being a gateway drug is about whether or not marijuana use will CAUSE further addictions. You'd have to be a fool to deny the downward spiral that serious addicts find themselves in, whether that spiral starts with cocaine, weed, or beer.

          Marijuana is not chemically addictive. Sure, people may become addicted to it, but you can become addicted to ANYTHING.

          Coca-cola contains caffeine, an addictive substance. Masturbation triggers endorphins which are also "addictive". Both are legal...the only what Marijuana would be a classified a gateway drug is because it's an "illegal substance", and those who are likely to break the law to get the high are a bit more likely to get high in other ways too. If Marijuana, like Coca-Cola and pornography, was legal, you wouldn't be seeing these problems of it being a "gateway drug".

A majority of scientists that have done drug research now believe that MJ may be a gateway drug because of how easy it is to get. Most people starting out doing drugs will probably find it easier getting the grass than say coke or heroin. In that respect you can call it a gateway drug. However, I have tried harder drugs (coke, shrooms) back in my younger days and I can honestly say that I didn't like the high or really care for the drug. So I guess I fit into your gateway diagnosis. However, I am not addicted to these harder drugs and according to your astute hypothesis by now I should have worked up to heroin.

          Also, on the same token, scientists like to call alcoholism a disease even though it is an addiction. There are sex addicts, drug addicts, risk takers (addicted to adrenaline), people addicted to cutting themselves. The reason may be more that they have an ADDICTIVE personality than they worked their way up the drug, sex, whatever chain.

          Now I see that you want to compare sex and what this guy is watching to working his way up the chain. The problem is that males are always horny (or at least I am). I like looking at women wear low cut tops and tight pants. I watch porn because my GF doesn't have sex with me every day or hell every other day. I don't view porn like sex because 1) sex is a helluva lot better than me spanking the monkey 2) digital ***** are hot but being able to grab a mount of boobies is a helluva a lot better.

          The only way I'd agree with you is if the future turned out like Futurama where fembots make out with us mere humans and we no longer have to work for the sex. Since we don't need a job to buy the flowers/chocolates/dinners for our women and can make out with hot female robots I guess then porn/sex robots may cause a rift in the male/female dynamics. But until we get to that point, watching porn is like the guy said in the article. Something to do when you're horny.

          As an end note I really don't understand why a majority of women see it as encroaching on their sex lives because their boyfriends watch porn. I told my girlfriend once if she would have sex with me every other day I wouldn't be watching porn on the internet. Since she hasn't taken me up on that offer I'll continue to watch it. I'd rather be having sex with my girlfriend all the time but since women and men view sex differently, I highly doubt I'll get all the sex I ever want. So I compromise and help myself. I just wish women would do the same instead of viewing sex/porn in a dirty light.

        I agree that it's irrational and that porn is normal for guys (and many girls), but this chick's thought that her boyfriend's porn could possibly mean that he's not satisfied by her is completely normal. Me? I know my boyfriend has porn, and I don't care because he sleeps with me every night. But, we females have a basic need to be appreciated, and when a guy is looking at other girls sexually, there's an irrational fear that pops up that he wants them more than us. It's normal to feel that way.

        I think that she went through the right line of reasoning to get beyond this irrational fear. Her relationship will probably be a lot better off as long as she and her boyfriend continue to be so open and honest. I also think it's smart of her to want to know what kind of porn he's looking at for the reasons she gave: you just never know if someone is hiding some illegal fantasy. Freaky is good, but some people cross the line, and she should know if there's a chance he might cross it in person...with someone else, since she's wouldn't fit into his fantasy in that kind of scenario.

        Anyway, I think she was smart about her fear and I respect her for that. Every woman needs to learn that porn is no big deal, and that if guys are given freedom in that aspect, it can actually enhance the relationship.

I've never had a girlfriend, or even done anything remotely sexual with a woman outside of spin the bottle as a freshman in college. Porn has never, in any of my relationships, been anything other than, "I'm stressed/horny and I need a quickie 15 minutes before work" sort of thing. I've watched porn with just about every serious boyfriend I've had, and I've had indepth, not at all embarrassing conversations about what we watch, what we wanna try, etc ... . Hell I know a lot of gay couples that even have tongue-in-cheek cheating rules like, "If Justin Timberlake ever magically propositions you, you can totally ***** him, but only if you videotape it so I can watch it too."
