- fandyllic, on 05/14/2009, -25/+105This is great. Not because it does any good, but because it further shows how stupid Dallas is. I'm all for it.
- BiscuitWorld, on 05/14/2009, -4/+77This is unconstitutional. When I was in high school, our city tried to impose a 10pm curfew. A handful of kids in my school got lawyers, sued the Mayor and won in Circuit Court. The city appealed and the State Supreme Court ruled that it was a Civil Rights violation to impose a curfew on anyone in a time of civil peace.
- bluesparks, on 05/14/2009, -4/+71Trading liberty for security here. Learn2parent instead, maybe?

--- - Powerfan5000, on 05/14/2009, -14/+57If Dallas improved their awful school system, then kids would stop playing hooky. They need to focus on making kids want to come to school instead of punishing them for skipping it.
- Obsession88, on 05/14/2009, -13/+52I think they should have the same curfew for everyone. You should be at work at that time, and if you work nights you should be a sleep. Think about all the crime we could prevent if we didn't let anyone outside.
- Shiftgood, on 05/14/2009, -1/+39i feel like the word freedom has a time and a place in texas. good for swaying votes, bad for policy making.
- Wolfie351, on 05/14/2009, -1/+34To cut crime? Well, then they should have a curfew for adults from 12am-6am
- Reavie, on 05/14/2009, -0/+33I know, I was just saying. Weekends killed my father.
- errik03, on 05/14/2009, -4/+36wtf kids cant go outside?
- tattertech, on 05/14/2009, -0/+31People on Digg fail at detecting sarcasm.
- Narkinbarf, on 05/14/2009, -3/+32What about my kids, they are home schooled. We don't conform to public school days off.
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -9/+37I ***** hate the Dallas government. We keep trading in one ***** mayor for another. There was recently a vote on whether to fund this hotel in Dallas with tax payer money. Since the powers that be knew that nobody wanted it they made it so that if you voted no to the proposition you were voting for the hotel (yes was a vote against the hotel). Guess what - it worked. They will pass a dumb ***** law like this but do nothing about the lack of accountability and outright corruption in DISD. Disgusting. If DISD teachers tried teaching their kids and if the parents of said DISD children gave a crap about their kids futures this wouldn't even be an issue.
- MrAwesomeMan, on 05/14/2009, -3/+30I thought you could just shoot kids in Texas.
- kidego365, on 05/14/2009, -22/+47Welcome to police state.
- badenglishihave, on 05/14/2009, -1/+25What, homeschooled kids going outside? And perhaps even socializing??? Outrageous!
/s
P.S. I was homeschooled myself, and my mother actually let us take snow days because it gave us a chance to hang out with other kids who got the day off. I thought that was a good idea. - McGuinness, on 05/14/2009, -18/+41What? Why dont you give them a 24 hour curfew. Seriously you're confining these kids to sit inside all summer long? NO WONDER WE HAVE AN OBESITY PROBLEM. Instead of putting them under house arrest, why dont you just start actually arresting them for any crimes they commit?
This is rediculous, and has to be against SOME sort of basic rights. - Obsession88, on 05/14/2009, -2/+24What? If curfews are good enough to control our children, why are the not good enough to control the rest of society?
p.S.: I am very much against curfews, don't think they work, and don't think they should be arbitrary places on any group. - cawfee, on 05/14/2009, -0/+19But it's so much easier to let the government take care of your kids and watch TV instead!
- robertisaar, on 05/14/2009, -2/+20no, not really.
- MarkBrent, on 05/14/2009, -1/+19Question is: Will it work?
- jeltringham, on 05/14/2009, -1/+19You can, but they can also shoot back.
- bghs2003, on 05/14/2009, -1/+18Government cannot and should not do the job of parents
- BeerRules, on 05/14/2009, -0/+16First off I doubt the law applies during time when school isn't in session, I'm not sure if Dallas is like Florida where they may go to school year round, but I'm pretty sure that curfew doesn't apply during summer and Christmas break.
- WhaneTheWhip, on 05/14/2009, -1/+17Brilliant, now kids will just stay inside and go online all day for some multi-player action. Solutions are solved from the inside out... placing control measures does not solve the problem of kids being out of school, it's just a bandaid, fix the problem, don't try to control it.
- viziontx, on 05/14/2009, -34/+48It's about time that the did something about the problem here in Dallas. If the parents won't do something to keep the kids in school, well, we'll just have to have a curfew.
- kamakazitp, on 05/14/2009, -2/+15I know I always loved my family's yearly vacation to the wonderful destination of.......
Dallas. - o76923, on 05/14/2009, -2/+15Because nobody under 17 dropped out to feed their family, is home schooled, already earned a GED, takes classes at night, or is sick and needs to go to a drugstore.
- SpoonMSU, on 05/14/2009, -0/+13Good luck with that.
- sonnybobiche, on 05/14/2009, -9/+21You can't make a kid WANT to go to school. School is boring, everyone knows this.
But you can punish them for not going. - inactive, on 05/14/2009, -0/+12Yep stay in school in Texas you will really learn a lot. The Texas board of edumacation is the bestest.
- edjenkins234, on 05/14/2009, -5/+16I recently went to work for two weeks in and around Dallas and I was shocked at how awesome and nice virtually everybody is down there, certainly a long way away from the way you get treated in "progressive california". I implore all you blindly bashing texas or dallas to actually either visit or talk to someone that has before you talk like this, it really makes all involved look pretty silly.
- nils, on 05/14/2009, -1/+12And it doesn't work anyway. Start fining the parents heavily instead. Make it HURT. Then encourage them to actually raise their kids to be decent people.
But that'd be work. Covering up symptoms is much quicker. :) - inigomntoya, on 05/14/2009, -1/+11Genius. I would LOVE to be part of such a society. As long as I ruled it.
- cnldelta, on 05/14/2009, -1/+11What about tourists?
- Tyrghast, on 05/14/2009, -1/+11Hey did the Dallas city budget ever get worked out or are the teachers still working for free?
- joncannon, on 05/14/2009, -1/+10Ridiculous has to be the most misspelled word on the Internet.
But I agree with your point though. More kids really need to be getting some fresh air and exercise. - Chompy, on 05/14/2009, -1/+10They don't have to be afraid of the place, as long as the cops pick them up and take them there. One or two trips should do the trick. Send the parents a bill if you really want to see some changes.
- Laminarcissus, on 05/14/2009, -1/+10Okay, I'll play a fun game and pretend this is worth answering:
-- Does this just apply for the school year?
Yes.
-- What about Summer?
This is a repeat of your first question. See previous answer.
-- What about kids who are home schooled?
Then they would be in their home school or accompanied by adult.
-- This is ***** I've never heard of keeping kids locked up inside during the ***** afternoon.
Less "locked up" and more "at school during school hours, where they are legally required to be."
-- This can't be constitutional. Don't kids have rights?
They do, but not the same rights as adults, because they aren't adults, they are children.
That was as much fun as I expected it would be. - inactive, on 05/14/2009, -0/+9Most Juvenile crime takes place during the day? Only adult criminals move at night?
- MindStalker, on 05/14/2009, -0/+9What I don't get is the article states "the fact we've had 1,900 kids picked up and put in truancy says more than I could say that what we have today isn't working."
Umm ok, so its already illegal, how is making it a double crime going to change anything? - ironhide, on 05/14/2009, -1/+9The curfew is M-F (and no I don't approve of it)
- bobbymarko, on 05/14/2009, -1/+92:30am doesn't come between 9am and 2pm...
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+8This is another way of saying, "The parents and law enforcement of Dallas can no longer control juveniles during this time."
- Chompy, on 05/14/2009, -2/+10Send the parents a bill whenever a cop stops a kid breaking the curfew. Suddenly, these "parents" will magically start giving a *****.
- UberNick, on 05/14/2009, -0/+7You forgot to tell us what you had for breakfast
- Dmilla16, on 05/14/2009, -3/+10sounds like a robot society..
- Maddoktor2, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6Papers, please.
- mizatt, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6@8Fold: The police are already supposed to enforce truancy
