These pictures show people (more or less) as they are. Common people, not so shaped by images of mass media. I think it sucks to have an article that makes such people less appealing because they may not be shiny, pretty, or politically correct. You can even be a freak, just create something inspiring and original.
Or maybe our kids should just watch more Hanna Montana. - BREZZZ, on 10/17/2009, -1/+43Seriously, that pic of Shel Silverstein scared the ***** out of me as a kid. I just feel like he is in prison for cold blooded murder, and somebody snapped this pic right before he strangled a man with the elastic of his underwear in the prison yard.
- BeShirtHappy, on 10/17/2009, -4/+38You can't judge a book by its cover...
- Gguillorn, on 10/16/2009, -0/+30Shel Silverstein was the ***** man. He wrote some amazing songs, the most famous probably being "A Boy Named Sue". His poems were amazing when I was a kid, and some of his songs are pretty twisted. If you read his books as a kid, check out his song "Freakin' At The Freaker's Ball".
- deadbabydoll, on 10/17/2009, -2/+30The Lewis Carroll is a photoshop. See the original picture of Carroll alone here:

so is robert munch - lindsayjc, on 10/17/2009, -0/+19Jack London did not write 'kids' books.
- nubnub, on 10/17/2009, -0/+19Shel Silverstein books were awesome. Also, the "go to hell" from the Where the Wild Things Are is just awesome.
- PuffyPuf, on 10/17/2009, -0/+18***** MAXIM. Agree 100%, and I could not put it in better words than you just have.
- rwiggum, on 10/17/2009, -0/+14It breaks my heart to know that most kids today will probably never read Shel Silverstein.
There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.
Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.
Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends. - n0ia, on 10/17/2009, -1/+15I'd like to see the photos of the Maxim writers/editors to compare. I'm sure they're the douchebag equivalent of these authors' creepiness.
- atm0, on 10/17/2009, -0/+11Falling Up.
'nuff said - johnn11238, on 10/17/2009, -0/+10I'm sorry, but what makes these people "creepy"?
buried. - aristotle0dude, on 10/17/2009, -2/+11People on the internet keep on using the word "creepy" like they know what it means. Most of those people look like "average" people.
Here is a "clue" to the moronic teens on the net. Not everyone looks like a glamourous celebrity and even celebrities can look "average" looking without their makeup on. Want to see an average looking "creepy" person? Look in the mirror. Yeah, that's right, most teens are creepy looking to the average healthy adult. - LongLiveRock2, on 10/17/2009, -0/+9He was also a cartoonist for Playboy!
- bat-21, on 10/17/2009, -0/+8The "girl" with A.A. Milne is his son, Christopher Robin.
- twiztidsinz, on 10/17/2009, -0/+8Shel Silverstein scared him away.
- randypanda, on 10/17/2009, -0/+8This list only contains accomplished authors not gangsters in prison who then decided to write children books.
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -0/+5No Madonna? She's creepier than any of these guys. ***** Maxim, buried.
- davewashere, on 10/17/2009, -0/+4He also penned the lyrics for the Dr. Hook song "Lookin for Pussy"
- molluscus, on 10/17/2009, -1/+5Why wouldn't kids today read Shel Silverstein? Where the Sidewalk ends had already been out for twenty years by the time I got to it and it was popular with just about everyone, even the kids who weren't normally big readers. I don't see why it would be any different today. The humor and adventure is timeless.
- CobraClutch, on 10/17/2009, -1/+5Some people wears glasses. Beth looks like a dude.
- espen89, on 10/17/2009, -1/+5***** list
- votic, on 10/17/2009, -0/+4they all actually seem like they'd be fun characters to meet, nothing "creepy..."
- Chanz, on 10/17/2009, -0/+4Gotta love Maxim's thought process here. Take an actually creepy picture of an author on the back of a book (Lewis Carrol, used in the screencap as well), find other pictures of authors who are simply unattractive or weird pictures of authors that aren't actually on the back of books and make a twelve page article about it.
- SpazAttack5000, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3It is safe to say that if they ever make a movie about A.A. Milne, he will be played by Ralph Fiennes.
- rocknog, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3I didn't need to see a picture of Roald Dahl to confirm that he was creepy. I've always been a huge fan of his books, but ever since I first read "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," I knew I was dealing with a seriously messed up person.
- GuitarHeroDenn, on 10/17/2009, -2/+5MOLE! BLOODY MOLE!
- votic, on 10/17/2009, -1/+4because 10 is the new 21.
- provision962, on 10/17/2009, -1/+4"Think twice about handing your kid a copy of The Giving Tree"
LOL
Lets just do what those ridiculous plastic looking women in the above advertisement want us to do, then we'll be cool. - johnn11238, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3What makes that "***** up"?
- 1ofMany, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3Who knew that Dr. Seuss and Mister Rogers were one and the same....
- TheCollective00, on 10/18/2009, -0/+3I don't know why you're being buried, votic, because it's God Damned True.
- graemedeacon, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary) author of Puff the Magic Dragon.
From wikipedia:
"In 1970, Yarrow was convicted of, and served three months in prison for, taking "improper liberties" with a 14-year-old fan"
I know people who worked at a bookstore he visited and all the women there described him as being very "touchy" (physically, not emotionally). - mike23w, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2All photos on one page
http://www.maxim.com/humor/stupid-fun/84645/creepi ... - seeliyon, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2He looks a little too much like a kindly old grandpa, actually. Shel always looked like a serial killer.
- junkfoodjoe, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2***** comment
- brownsound00, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2There he is. Took you a while eh?
- seventhc, on 10/17/2009, -1/+3You can't judge a book by its cover.
- hushpuppy20, on 10/18/2009, -0/+2R.L. Stine didn't just write Goosebumps but the slightly more sexed-up "Fear Street" series which was aimed at Teenage Girls. Something about him describing High School boys always made him seem kind of pervy to me. He'd always write from the girls POV and describe how they lusted after the boys....
- briguy1, on 10/16/2009, -1/+3Yes very "interesting" people!
- votic, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2he kind of murdered a family, that excludes someone from being a famous children's author, it's in the rules.
- borez, on 10/17/2009, -3/+5I saw this 6 hours ago and I still can't believe that there's no pedobear comment yet.
- JAGUART, on 10/17/2009, -3/+5
No Edward Gorey?
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ijjyqoR1Pz8/SYID51RPagI/ ... - KingGorilla, on 10/18/2009, -1/+3So why do we have people design covers for books? If that saying were true then the cover would just be some protective binding with the title and author
- merdiesel, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2and badly done at that. Look are her hand on his shoulder.
- shagg187, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2I know he doesn't write children's books but Alan Moore is ***** creepy!
- yorkhock, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2Edward Gorey ***** rules.
N is for Neville. Always. - miggie, on 10/18/2009, -0/+1I thought until I was a grown up that Shel Silverstein was black because of that picture.
- satmo, on 10/18/2009, -0/+1Tou will find Pedobear on pic # 7 LOL
