- solemnraven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I, in fact, watched the whole thing.
It's interesting to see where from and how far we've come over the last 20 years.
"Finally broke the 64k barrier"
wow.. - estacado, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16You obviously don't know geeks. They can watch this kind of stuff all day long.
- Depthfunction, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16I found the whole patent lawsuit discussion interesting. That conversation could have been recorded yesterday. The more things change . . .
- serenity2012, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I watched the whole thing. Please don't call the geek police. I rather enjoyed it . . .
- pseudojd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Young Dvorak looks like he could be Alex's father....
- kingygk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Man I remember this show. I watched this in high school! I was junior then :) I remember playing Leisure Suit Larry on my friends fathers Packard bell it was an 8088 with cga graphics. Then we all got excited when the 286 9 mega hertz processors came out. Then a year later the 386s. I remember when my friend was in college he took out a student loan to get a brand spanking new 486 33. It had 16 megs of ram and a 250 meg hard drive. He paid 3500 for it. We all thought he was nuts getting such a big hard drive Ha how times have changed ! This show was great. What happend to PBS. They used to have great technology programming like this. Its a shame they went to hell.
- 501337, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Sweet! Dual 5 1/4" floppy drives.. what to do with all that storage space?
- Philoushka, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"... it could be built by robots..."
- waza8501, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13I get no spam
- NycterisA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Oh wow, he hasn't changed much!
- Anrkist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Much like a million dollar sports players, these guys went home that night and got laid.
- Reliant, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Oh we were all so young then!!!
- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5i dont know about the we part. it was still several months till i was born.
- drakino, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Wow. Even back then John was amazed about cache on hard drives, and puts it at the top of the list for what makes a machine fast.
(For those that don't catch the reference, Dvorak has been praising Hybrid Hard Drives on the TWiT podcast for ages now, as the only way to run Vista. Aka new drives with some flash memory for cache.) - psbpv3o, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dvorak is a badass....
- anarchtica, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Did anyone else notice Gary Kildall? He's the guy that lost the IBM deal to Bill Gates which led to Microsoft's eventual success.
- ranthony, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Previewing a computer that never saw the light of day...
Interesting trip in the way-back machine. - AZTriGuy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, when it effectively raises the cache from anywhere between 4 and 16 MB that's on current drives to between 4 and 16 GB, well that had better damn well have an effect on performance. I'm with John on that boat, the speed and accessibility of flash memory with the sheer size of hard disk based storage. Like the old Reese's Peanut Butter Cups commercials - You got chocolate in my peanut butter! You got peanut butter in my chocolate!
I just can't wait until we see these things go mainstream on laptops, especially. - hospitalcio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2By the time we could figure out IBM's Micro Channel Architecture (MCA), it was gone. The video is historically significant, because the PS2 was designed to recapture the proprietary PC. IBM didn't realize the genie was out of the bottle.
- antdude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ditto.
- markperia, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2lust after?
well now its possible with porn on the interweb but back then... - Nok1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The thing that many people don't realize is that back "then" IBM was the Microsoft of today.
- gelhead50, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3@lorddshyzl: It's Will Sasso
Big guys have enough coming at them as it is there's no need to call him the wrong name. - zodieman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I really dislike Dvorak but for some reason I can't stop watching Cranky Geeks ;) His penchant for publicly dissing Macs however is really getting old.
- LordDshyzL, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Is it just me or does Dvorak look a lot like Will Sasser from Madtv
- InvertedDonkey, on 10/11/2007, -30/+4did anyone watch more than a minute of this?
