- scooterfish, on 07/23/2008, -1/+251The title is misleading.
Court reporters don't type words from letters like that found on a regular keyboard.
"Court stenographers can type entire words all at once by striking multiple keys at the same time. The left hand spells out the beginning of a syllable, while the right hand spells out the end; all keys are pressed at the same time, and the machine produces an alphabet soup that's incomprehensible to anyone who's not trained in machine shorthand. "
http://www.slate.com/id/2119534/ - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -1/+194It doesn't even look like she's typing; it looks like she's just banging on the keys.
- toothcake, on 07/24/2008, -5/+153I can type 1000 words a minute. Except it's in my own language.
- chonuts, on 07/24/2008, -0/+131Well, because she is. Literally. Stenographers don't type out entire words and they don't even use typical shorthand abbreviations. They use special keyboards, called stenotypes, that aren't in the QWERTY format, which allows them to type things out phonetically. For example, an experienced courtroom stenographer might use only two letters for an entire phrase that's appears frequently, such as, "Do you swear," or "your Honor." It all comes out in this jumbled mess of letters and numbers that needs to be translated back into English.
The same technology is found in Closed Captioning, particularly for live broadcasts where a script or pre-recording isn't available. A stenographer types out whatever they hear, and that jumbled mess of letters/numbers gets translated into English by the computers and appears on the bottom of your TV screen (with a slight delay, of course).
*sigh* My aunt was a stenographer... - pipes27, on 07/24/2008, -1/+106Why do so many websites feel the need to build their own ***** flash video player? This pisses me off so ***** much; they end up never working and are practically unusable.
/rant - acmaurer, on 07/23/2008, -2/+99I know it's going to sound nerdy, but I think this is really cool. I wish I could type on a stenograph machine!
- hollywoodphony, on 07/23/2008, -0/+87When I took typing class, I had a crazy typing teacher who was obsessed with the author of our typing book. His name was Cortez Peters and when she would recount his inspirational life story, she would get tears in her eyes. I ***** you not.
- jotate, on 07/24/2008, -1/+82If you can type 120 wpm, whatever activity it was that lead you to that ability probably killed any chance you had at ever being cool.
Not saying I'm not right there with you, I'm just saying. - alapoet, on 07/23/2008, -3/+80And here I was thinking I was cool typing 120 wpm.

- jotate, on 07/24/2008, -0/+42There was a computer science professor at my university who had an assistant that would type up all his lectures as he was doing them with this technique/machine. Of course, being a room full of computer science majors, I'm not sure if the class was more interested in the device or the fact that she was the only female in the room.
- PROMOpinion, on 07/23/2008, -1/+43Nope, I can't do that

"The initial Z is also commonly chorded by the entire initial bank, STKPWHR, in order to avoid thousands of potential conflicts."

- Chrelion, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7As of 2005, Barbara Blackburn was the fastest English language typist in the world, according to The Guinness Book of World Records. Using the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, she has maintained 150 words per minute (wpm) for 50 minutes, and 170 wpm for shorter periods. She has been clocked at a peak speed of 212 wpm. Blackburn, who failed her typing class in high school, first encountered the Dvorak keyboard in 1938, quickly learned to achieve very high speeds, and occasionally toured giving speed-typing demonstrations during her secretarial career. She appeared on The David Letterman Show and was deeply offended by Letterman's comedic treatment of her skill.[15] Blackburn died in April 2008.[15]
Dvorak's not gonna give you stenography speeds, but for a layout usable on a normal keyborad, I think that's pretty damn impressive. - Saiyanz, on 07/24/2008, -2/+9god damn it i'm stuck at freaking 97 and can't break into the triple digits....
- MacTyler, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7This is the internet, not your personal note to self clipboard.
