- luma, on 10/12/2007, -15/+136As your typical angry nerd Digg user, I'm an atheist. Having said that, I found these to be funny, well produced, and thought provoking. One can only hope that people of all faiths (including those of my own lack-of-faith) can take a lesson or two away from the message here - don't be a douchebag.
- MidnightWatcher, on 10/12/2007, -7/+114Like Morpheus said, "There's a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path." Sometimes Christians feel they need to adhere to a stereotype of what a Christian should "look" like -- how they dress, what they should always be reading, what music they should always be listening to, etc. -- and while some of that is true, being a Christian is much more than that. It's about a faith, a relationship with Christ, who you've chosen to follow and strive to be like. And what was Christ like? He LOVED all people, accepted them as they were, did not respect someone just because of their social class or popularity. This was how he touched hearts and changed lives, and we should all want more of that each and every day.
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and love your neighbor as you love yourself." -- Jesus Christ - wpc105, on 10/12/2007, -6/+81"I so feel this way."
I do too, and so do a lot of Christians. It's such a tragedy that when people think "Christian" they think of judgmental, pushy people who force their beliefs on others. My grandfather was a Presbyterian minister. He led by example. He didn't force his beliefs on others. He practiced his religion quietly, helped those in need, and guess what? People noticed.
I was atheist/agnostic for many years because of people who told me that you have to do certain things or be a certain person to be a Christian. They wanted you to conform. The only thing you have to do to be a Christian is believe in God and try to help those around you. Most everything else is just nuance. - RevRyan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+76As a minister, I find these videos to be great. I'm Baptist in the South, who can be the worst of the worst when it comes to elitist religious fanaticism. I implement many different sources to understand my Christianity, especially the Matrix. I wrote a lot of papers on it in seminary.
It's so good to finally see something Xian make it into mainstream that isn't some fanatic who defiles the whole group. Living the Christian life in spite of Christianity is the toughest challenge I've faced thusfar.
~Rev Ryan - unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -7/+74I'm so sick of you buddhists putting your religion in everyone's faces. No, I don't want to rub his belly!
- crazyjeff0, on 10/12/2007, -11/+67I hope this gets through to fundamentalist Christians, they need to wake up and smell crazy.
- spxiii, on 10/12/2007, -4/+55True Christianity does not mix with the "American Dream" of owning everything and everyone you see. Therefore, it is not cool to be a Christian.
Half-assed Christianity, however, can be used as an accessory and is very trendy, especially in politics. - tratch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52"I have met several "Christians" like the one in the video. Without fail, they revealed themselves as sleazy hypocrites."
Christians are just people, they're flawed by their very nature. Everyone has their vices and their problems, a true Christian struggles with those vices and tries to rise above them rather than allow them to become a part of their lives. They're not going to be perfect, but they should try their hardest to be. - orientis, on 10/12/2007, -10/+55@SoundJudgment You replied to the first comment just so people would see your stupid opinion.
P.S Your opinion is stupid. Stupid. - schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -25/+6977gigs of Christian music ughhh.
- Daedalus17, on 10/12/2007, -7/+51@neoform
"Christians were underdogs?
Christians have never been the underdogs.."
Yeah they were on top of the world while Nero was exterminating them. Same goes for the Christians that are killed on a daily basis in Nigeria for not converting to Islam. They have it so good..
/sarcasm - brickbat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+52I have met several "Christians" like the one in the video. Without fail, they revealed themselves as sleazy hypocrites.
- squeaker, on 10/12/2007, -12/+52"Be a Christian without the stick up your ass, and without rubbing it in everyone's face." I like it.
And I'm a Buddhist! - rnernento, on 10/12/2007, -7/+44Its nice to see Christians with a sense of humor. Especially geeky humor.
- rnernento, on 10/12/2007, -15/+50Umm, good for you, but if you actually watch the videos they aren't trying to scare you into Christianity. I'm not religious at all, but you shouldn't lump anyone with faith into a group, and then act like you are better then them because you don't have to believe in anything to act the way you do.
- tookeey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Nobody hates religious hypocrites more than Jesus. Trust me... or don't -- read the gospels yourself. (I recommend the Gospel of John for first timers).
- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -25/+52It has never, ever, ever ever ever, been cool to be a Christian.
Ever. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29There are tons of these kinds of ads. Parody is expressly not copyright infringement under the fair use clause.
- dougmidkiff, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33Christians don't do nice things because they fear burning in hell forever. At least I don't. The Bible makes it very clear that we are only saved through Jesus. The acts of love and kindness flow forth from a genuine love of God and our desire to fulfill his plan for us.
See Titus 3:4-7, Acts 4:11-12, Romans 3:23-24, - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -36/+58Hi, I'm an athiest. I am polite, charitable, and moral. I don't rape old women and steal their pain medication. I don't murder, rape, steal, or lie (well, I lie a little, but it's fun to pretend to be a chick in WoW..). I give to charity. I volunteer for the special olympics. And I don't need the constant threat of an invisible man in the sky who will SMITE me if I piss him off to constantly remind me to do it.
If you did all the good things because you feel they're the right thing to do, and you expect no reward from the invisible man in the sky, you are a good person.
If you do good things because you're afraid of burning in hell forever, are you a nice person or a fearful person? - berad, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32Lyph4,
I appreciate your candor, but that's not what Christianity is all about. It is sad that human actions have tarnished the gospel, or that the mere mention of "Jesus Christ" immediately incites images of the teetotalers that pass judgement on everyone but themselves. That's not Christianity in any way shape or form and I'm ashamed of it and, as part of the Church, I apologize for it.
Christianity is about two things: the recognition that we are all sinners, and that Christ's death on the cross washes us clean of those sins. It has absolutely nothing to do with good deeds, rules, or any other hogwash you THINK it does because that's what is portrayed in society, media, et al. It is more about complete humility in recognizing our insignificance apart from God. When you see it twisted in any other fashion, blame the messenger, not the message. - ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I sorry man, but there really is such a thing, there's even Christian Ska! (Though the Supertones ain't half bad)
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29You're one of the good ones :) I'm an atheist but I believe Jesus was an incredible example of what we should all strive to be. The whole "what would Jesus do", while cliche, is actually a great measure of moral values we should all entertain.
I don't necessarily believe magical superman in the sky did his mom and that's why he's a good person, but to each his own I guess. - carbonetc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19At first I sort of liked the Christian guy in the first video. At least he cared enough about his worldview to do some studying. Now he just needs a broader range.
Unless the point was that he didn't read the books and just carries them around for effect. - Rahepsi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Pheno, I love the irony of your comment.
- miggie, on 10/12/2007, -21/+36I so feel this way.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Many are missing the point. This is mostly an inner-christian message; a message from one group of christians to another to basically "stop acting like a stereoype of what you think a 'Christian' is supposed to be...just be yourself and follow Jesus". I think it's well done for that. It's not an attempt at evanglism or image-makeover; not really aimed at anyone else other than other people who porten to follow Jesus
- Pebcak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15That seems a bit contrary, don't you think? I'm pretty sure Jesus believed in God. How can you follow him but deny what he taught (e.g. loving God with all of your heart)?
- AggieTales, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Love the ads, just worried about a cease and desist letter from Apple Legal over this though. Apple is kinda notorious for sending them for little things....
- Muncher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Please don't generalize all Christian music as the crap that Christian radio stations play. Blindside, Showbread, and Relient K are all excellent "Christian" bands (according to your personal taste of course, you might not particularly like them). Even U2 could be considered a Christian band.
The More You Know - jcims, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20I'd say most of the athiests i know are good, charitable folks. If you read through the New Testament, though, you'll find that good people don't go to heaven, and bad people don't go to hell. In fact, Jesus condemned folks for being too 'good', because they were trying to work their way to heaven. It's like trying to drink yourself sober, the more you feel like you've got it right, the further away from right you are.
- freegrace, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@espek
"I really don't care what people believe, as long as they keep it to themselves."
You do realize you just did the opposite of what you want everyone else to do. That is, keep their beliefs to themselves. Or does that only apply to people you disagree with.
If you truly believed what you just said, then you would have no problem with people expressing their beliefs. It seems people are all for free speech, up until some says something they do not agree with...and then it is "keep it to yourself." - kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I am a geek and a Christian... definitely not your typical Digg user. (and no, I don't have a JPod!!)
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Buddhism is not really a religion. That's why I like it, although I don't follow its teachings.
- tbossme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Good humor always has an element of truth to it? This is good humor. An enthusiastic Digg for me.
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Has Apple a copyright over the fact of two guys introducing themselves standing in front of a white background? What a brave new world...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13If you believe people should keep their beliefs to themselves, why did you just post your own? I'm confused.
- spimby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I love all these "hip" Christian churches that are popping up everywhere. It's clearly the trend in trying to get young people interested in going to church. I do however, think it ends up being a parody of itself. It's just a little too "hip" and under the surface, it's just the same old stuff. For example the church that made these videos still asks for money (http://www.communitychristian.org/explore/egiveGod.html) and even has EFT and "eGiving" options (how hip!). Why not just ask your congregation to give your money to the poor, like Jesus did? Tithing to a church is a stuffy old idea (and if you want to play scripture quote war, ask yourself if your church requires women to cover their heads as Paul says they *must* in 1 Corinthians 11:5-15. If you can conveniently skip one verse, why not another?) Would Jesus have given his money to an organization so they could make flashy videos, or would he have used that same money to feed and clothe the poor? Didn't Jesus also say not to pray in houses of worship like the hypocrites do, but rather pray in your closet in private (Matthew 6.5-6.6). At least they're not preaching this Satanic "Prosperity Gospel".
- geekymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16That's awesome! Finally I get to see something done by Christians and I don't have to cringe and try to explain to people that not all of us are that cheesy.
- Donza, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16MAC != Mac
- Fantt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Wow - that was totally not what I was expecting. A breath of fresh air.
I'm a buddhist and I endorse that message! - kryptogrowl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12these are way too long.
note to everyone attempting a Mac paradoy:
If Apple can be clever/funny in 30 sec, you doulbling that time doesn't make your's any better. - c0d3b0y, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9As I Lay Dying, Underoath, ZAO, Still Remains, Norma Jean, Haste The Day, He Is Legend, August Burns Red, The Chariot, Demon Hunter....any of these bands sound familiar???
Did you know they're all CHRISTIAN bands? - roguenine2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think there are probably a lot of christ-followers here on digg... we just don't speak up. you know... the whole turn the other cheek thing. i noticed when i first started reading the comments how many christians or tolerant atheists were posting... and most remarkably... not getting buried. kudos diggers
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18I have to agree. Christian rock is a poor excuse for music. No musical merit whatsoever.
I'm a Christian and I listen to Led Zeppelin. - astatine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's a trap!
- ztraut, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Hey JACKASSES! The fat 'Buddha' isn't a Buddha at all.
Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddah )
Hotei, the obese, Laughing Buddha, usually seen in China (This figure is believed to be a representation of a medieval Chinese monk who is associated with Maitreya, the future Buddha, and is therefore technically not a Buddha image.)
I wish people would educate themselves before ridiculing. I am no Buddhist but I am a fan of informed argument. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Lyph4 simply asked a question, there is no reason to feel threatened and there is no reason to attack him/her. A basic tenet of Christianity is that there is a Hell where "bad" people go. The question is simply asking whether you do kind acts out of genuine concern for the target person or only because you're afraid of the afterlife. Someone that does it out of true kindness would be a better person since he/she truly cares for the welfare of others, while the other is doing something they don't really want to do.
- samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I enjoyed those.
I think it just about sums up my faith, and a lot of people's attitudes towards people like me. And it seems to be done by people who are generally quite cool, not dull Christians trying to be hip. That would be ironic. - ThePict, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"According to Evangelical Christains ... it doesn't matter how "good" you are, if you don't "give your life to Jesus" you'll burn in hell."
Conversely, it doesn't matter how bad you've been, are, or will be. If you've accepted Jesus, you're saved. Just for picking the right side. -
