Gun restrictions = More crime - mollydog12, on 07/17/2009, -7/+316"it takes a special person to keep their head on straight and protect another human life."
it also takes a special parents to understand the dangers the world poses to their children and raise them accordingly.
"True, a gun shouldn't just be carelessly stored, but a responsible gun owner makes sure those living in the home know when and how to use a gun."
couldn't agree more. - charm803, on 07/17/2009, -1/+296Oh, are they going to have fun in jail, getting shot by a 10 year old.
- RealmDown, on 07/17/2009, -11/+289And the child will always live with the pride of knowing that he did what he could to protect his sister.
FTFY - Janinco, on 07/17/2009, -8/+254
FTA "In a panic, the ten-year-old grabbed his mother's gun for protection. "He did what I told him to do. I never told him to get the gun, but thank God he did," she said. Once the two suspects opened the door, threatening the kids, deputies say the boy fired a bullet into the lip of Roderick Porter. The two men were taken to the hospital, where they were later arrested."
Ten years old... - wolfing, on 07/17/2009, -1/+226One of the guys just left prison a month ago, I mean, seriously
- TalenGTP, on 07/17/2009, -13/+2142nd Amendment FTW.
- Chairboy, on 07/17/2009, -6/+191Remember, when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.
- kronzdigg, on 07/17/2009, -30/+200This is exactly the reason we need stronger gun control laws. Those poor black guys didn't get to rape either of the kids or take anything from the house. WHAT AN INJUSTICE!!!
- cquilliam, on 07/17/2009, -13/+182Boom, Headshot!
Who says games are bad for kids? - Jeff901, on 07/17/2009, -4/+171ONE SHOT? (At least that is what I get from the article) Damn!!!
Kid has evidently had some training.
Good for him! Gun control is hitting your target every time! - damnshoes, on 07/17/2009, -1/+164when i was 10 years old, i usually would pretend i was a dinosaur.
:] - jsainz, on 07/17/2009, -9/+168i can only hope, and god forbid that anything like this ever happens to my family, that my children would have done the same thing. it takes a special person to keep their head on straight and protect another human life.
- cbsx01, on 07/17/2009, -10/+165Where were the police? Oh, that's right... A few minutes away.
What's sad is that they'll heal and be back to do it again. A dead burglar does NOT commit another burglary. - jsainz, on 07/17/2009, -8/+153or he could have lived with the horror of watching his younger sister being raped by the wasted human life that broke into his house, before he was raped and strangled himself. im proud of him!
- inigomntoya, on 07/17/2009, -7/+141A mother who has taught their kids how to use a gun. That's who.
- Stiverton, on 07/17/2009, -1/+109Nice shooting kid, but don't get cocky!
- LouisCipher777, on 07/17/2009, -7/+113the difference is when you actually teach your kids about guns instead of leaving all of their learning needs to your television.
when I was a kid there were loaded guns in my house, and the homes of most of my friends. no one ever shot someone who didnt need to be shot because we were taught from an early age that whatever is on the other end of the gun when you pull the trigger dies and they don't come back.
sorry for your world view but the police weren't there. the police don't prevent crime, they fill out reports and draw lines in chalk and take pictures. in the moment a crime happens, you are on your own. what would have happened if the kid didn't shoot that guy. what if he couldnt get to the gun because it was locked up, because imbeciles like you can't bother to teach your children about gun safety or because you don't have enough faith that you have taught him well? - CrackHappy, on 07/17/2009, -4/+110You do realize that for thousands of years, up until a few decades ago, this was COMMON practice. In fact, many people believe that our coddling and overprotectiveness of our children is starting to cause some serious problems. Have you hired or worked with a very young person lately in a professional atmosphere? Good luck getting them to take responsibility or have initiative if they had the kinds of parents that were very overprotective.
Granted, I still disagree with leaving a 10 and 8 year old home alone for any significant period of time (anything over a couple of minutes, for myself), but in some cases, it's unavoidable.
I don't know, I'm contradicting myself here, but it's one of those things that I have always felt is controversial and very dependent on individual judgement and circumstances. It's hard to judge someone on this without all the facts. - NightC, on 07/17/2009, -10/+104This is why I am pro 2nd amendment. People have a right to defend their own homes.
- pathouston22, on 07/17/2009, -7/+97"the ten-year-old grabbed his mother's gun for protection. "He did what I told him to do. I never told him to get the gun"
What the hell? This makes no sense. - Yodwinder, on 07/17/2009, -10/+98BUT IF GUNS WERE ILLEGAL NO ONE WOULD HAVE THEM, NOT EVEN CRIMINALS!!!11!ONE!!1
/s - k1n6, on 07/17/2009, -11/+97proof positive that guns aren't the problem, irresponsible people. Teach a child how to handle a gun and they can do what needs to be done when its necessary.
- GamerXR72, on 07/17/2009, -2/+87A working mother. Not everything is like the movies.
- inigomntoya, on 07/17/2009, -2/+83Obviously from video games. As you get extra points for head shots!
- uncleosbert, on 07/17/2009, -1/+81no, that's pretty normal. my sister and i could stay home alone at that age while our mom ran errands > 90 minutes or so.
crackhappy is right. it depends on the kids and how mature they are, but it wasn't unusual even 20 years ago. damn, i'm old! - JFitzpatrick, on 07/17/2009, -0/+77Good plan. Nine out of Ten robbers are terrified of Triceratops.
- Janinco, on 07/17/2009, -4/+80I have a loaded gun in my home, and if needed, my children know how to use it.
What good is it to have a gun in the home, if you can't get to it when needed?
True, a gun shouldn't just be carelessly stored, but a responsible gun owner makes sure those living in the home know when and how to use a gun.
Guns are no different than vehicles, it's not the "gun or car" that kills, it's the person operating it. - Chairboy, on 07/17/2009, -13/+88Watching the vote-downs on your comment is funny. Anti-gun folks absolutely HATE things that expose the logical fallacies they rely on.
Hence, the cowardly blind down-diggs without any attempt to explain why they disagree with you. - Stevanoski, on 07/17/2009, -5/+76BTW, only as an aside, a note of interest, one of the burglars tried to press charges on me for assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
Never had the charge pressed but the DA did call and want a statement. I hired the best lawyer in town (the one who had every connection with every official and politician in the county and state) and showed up to be questioned.
The DA saw who was with me and said, "we're done here, sorry to bother you." - f0dder, on 07/17/2009, -29/+99Thank god the mom responsibly left the kids home alone w/an unlocked handgun.
- raitchison, on 07/17/2009, -6/+75Their civil rights were violated, when is Jesse Jackson going to get involved.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -18/+84guns are evil! this is proof! wait....
- fraglerock, on 07/17/2009, -3/+65I bet if there was no gun to be found, the kid would have crushed the buraglers to death with his massive balls. That guy was lucky to be shot. He could have been killed.
- NorthMass, on 07/17/2009, -6/+67To the gun control crowd, with all due respect, don't cases like this make you at least reconsider your views? What would of this kid done without the gun?
- FacePuncher, on 07/17/2009, -1/+62from the looks of those pictures....i doubt they know what an economy is.
- Stevanoski, on 07/17/2009, -8/+67Probably when you start minding your own business.
- raitchison, on 07/17/2009, -2/+61While I agree that it wouldn't be a bad thing if this thug were taken off the face of the earth the 10 year old probably doesn't need the trauma that comes from taking a life.
- sharkydog, on 07/17/2009, -0/+57Or hours, depending on where you live.
- pegothejerk, on 07/17/2009, -1/+58that why people should teach their children instead of instilling fear in them. proper gun respect is a must. general survival and emergency skills are, as well. If you can throw in some bo staff, it won't hurt to make them a little more awesome.
- o1hc, on 07/17/2009, -2/+58dude was probably thinking with how ***** the economy is he wants back in on prison.
: ) - awicks89, on 07/17/2009, -5/+60i wish i was this bad ass at age 10
- artwhite, on 07/17/2009, -3/+57And the child is alive
- IphtashuFitz, on 07/17/2009, -0/+53Bulletproof grill?
- deaftly, on 07/17/2009, -11/+62I blame rap music
- tiraid, on 07/17/2009, -0/+50I think she told them to hide in the closet... That's the best I could come up with from the statement.
- kiingdano, on 07/17/2009, -4/+52that kid wins at life.
he should be allowed to retire. - Stevanoski, on 07/17/2009, -8/+55Amen to that. I only speak from experience. Glad that I only knocked a burglar unconcious and smote one of the other two when I could have shot them.
I am glad I don't have to live with that but my feelings and prayers are entirely with the child. - Bangaarang, on 07/17/2009, -2/+48My mom worked and went to college so she could put food on the table while I was home alone. Granted I was alone at a very early age but I knew how to take care of myself.
- JinxCrow, on 07/17/2009, -0/+41To you I say, I'm pro-gun control : I'm for responsible gun owners keeping tabs on their own purchases and not letting violent/unbalanced people having guns, keeping records of the guns in case someone steals them to perpetrate a crime.
I'm actually glad this child knew to use a gun in self defense. Note : self defense (and in defense of his sister and home).
So long as the kid isn't showing it off to friends or using it for crimes, who really can criticize someone for teaching their child gun safety? (which includes how to handle one) -
